NATIONAL

USTA Suspends Events

Updated Statement - March 23, 2020:

Due to the continued situation surrounding the COVID-19 virus, and after discussions with the USTA Medical Advisory Committee, effective immediately the USTA will extend the suspension of USTA sanctioned products and events, including Adult and Junior Tournaments, USTA League, Junior Team Tennis, Team Challenge, Team Tournaments, USTA Schools programs, Tennis on Campus and Wheelchair events, through May 3. Additionally, recognizing the evolving and fast-changing nature of this situation, the USTA will continue to monitor and assess conditions to make future determinations about events and activities taking place after May 3.

All Category 1 and Super Category 2 National Adult Tournaments with an ITF status, all ITF Junior events and all USTA Pro Circuit and professional events will align with the same calendar as the ITF, ATP and WTA, and be suspended through June 7.

Both the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., and the USTA National Campus, in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, Fla., will remain closed for play and instructional opportunities through May 3. Any patron who wishes to cancel participation in a scheduled activity should contact the specific location for refund information. These policies will be in effect pending additional guidance or directives from each local governmental agency and the CDC. The USTA will continue to monitor and assess conditions to make future determinations about all activities at these facilities.

*sigh* It is the right choice .... just not very happy about it. In the big scope of things, tennis is fairly trivial, but a big part of my life.

My daughter is a HS senior, we are waiting for them to officially cancel senior prom, senior trip and commencement .... those are fabric of life things that are hard to let go of .... even if it is the right decision.

They just canceled all of that in VA. Luckily for us, our youngest graduated 2 years ago, but I couldn’t imagine having to go through all of that under these conditions. At this time 2 years ago, we were still visiting colleges.

Yeah, she is one day fine with it all, the other day not so much.

Thankfully we did our final college visits in February before all this really hit. They cancelled all admitted student weekends.

This seems to be jumping the gun.

In San Diego county we're shut down. But we are not seeing much in the way of deaths. I believe we have only 1 fatality attributable to C-19, a man in his 70s. If the virus is as dangerous as suggested, we should be seeing a significant problem with our large homeless population, who are practicing neither social distancing nor proper hygiene. Given the tourist/international travel into the area, it is reasonable to suspect that the virus has been in the wild here since January. Corona viruses historically have more trouble spreading in warmer weather. We were in the 70s today and a lot of people were outdoors exercising.

Just because New York is getting smashed by the virus doesn't mean the rest of the country has the same problems. If San Diego gets over the peak in a week or two, does it really make sense to shut down the tennis season for another month?

I look back on my high school prom as the most over-hyped thing in my life.
1) Graduating high school is not an achievement
2) Many other life experiences surpass it in magnitude: college degrees, marriage, childbirth, career milestones

I know in the moment so many people think its a big thing but it really isn't when you look back. In fact it was almost universally the most dangerous moment in your child's life and all parent's should breathe a sigh of relief. Drunken teens is never a good idea.

DANG DUDE, LIGHTEN UP A DAGUM SECOND!

Yes senior prom is lame (as viewed by a 50 year old) yes HS grad is not an achievement to the higher class and yes a lot of other things are more important.

But to this just turned 18 year old, who is waiting to be named valedictorian, who has worked for 12 years for it, just has her first boyfriend and was going to her very first (and only) HS dance ... it is a big damn deal to her. And I have to deal with the fallout.

Drunken ... not a chance with this child and her friends.

Seriously, have a little compassion for groups that are mourning what this pandemic is causing them to lose.

stop with the negativity. Graduating High school is an achievement. Dude, people drink more in college. it definitely not the most dangerous part of a child's life. its a big effing thing when you are a teenager. You can never get that time back. what's wrong with you?

I guess you misconstrued my message which was not to be negative but offer some perspective so kids won't feel so depressed about missing grad celebrations. For me and many of my friends it wasn't that big a deal and after a few years we realized how graduating high school wasn't much of an accomplishment compared to graduating college, establishing a career, having a family etc. I'm sure some people such as yourself did make a big deal of it and look back to as a great time in your life. But that's not everybody's experience is all I'm saying.

I think escalating it as a disaster because "you can never get that time back" is being more negative. I'm just trying to lessen the FOMO mindset is all. Sorry if it came off as bashing grad.

And maybe grad has changed but in my day it was responsible for at least 2 deaths a year in my city which lead to cries for "Dry Grads" everywhere. It was dangerous and parents were very frightened about many of the grad festivities and potential for bad things: car accidents, fights, unprotected intercourse. Maybe kids are different these days.

I didn't misconstrue your message. There are a lot more issues in high school besides drinking.

On my grad night two of my classmates died in an auto crash. ALL these canceled events can/should be re-scheduled.

For years we've been hearing how Americans work too hard, not getting enough vacation time like Europeans who "get a month off"--the Chinese take a month off for New Years--Have a nice staycation!

Tennis is the perfect sport for social distancing--play singles, don't sneeze or spit on your partner--refrain from smelling the balls a la Cibulkova. Scientific studies show tennis players live the longest! Stopping us from playing our sport is shortening our lives!

There wasn't in my day. But I am willing to acknowledge life is different in other places compared to my sheltered small town upbringing.

It''s not prudent to compare your small town high life or my exurban life to what's going on today. from what I know suicide is the big problem in high school now. things are different from the 70's for better or worse. The funny thing is, people don't talk face to face anymore. I could't imagine dealing with this in high school. we only had one phone line.

That could potentially be huge if you are in a top program and looking at college scholarships. Agree.

Yes, a different world. In some ways better, in some ways worse. But in the end I think people really need to focus on what is truly important in life: Family, Friends and Health. We can get through this as long as we have those things. And while we will miss out on things (Sports, Proms, Concerts, Weddings, etc), life will go on and will be great again if we can stay healthy and keep our loved one's well.

@Dartagnan64 for the record ... I think it would be the rare HS senior who would not mourn the loss of the end of their senior year. They are justified in their feelings ... even if the loss is for the greater good.

Mine is a little different from many ... laser focused on academics and only this year began to enjoy everything else. She was excited to finally be going to a dance, even after 3 previous years of saying they didn't matter.

She is most angry about probably losing her last 5 AP tests .... has already taken 10 (all with a score of 5), these last 5 with scores of 4 or higher would give her capstone designation and a nice extra scholarship. Looks like those tests will be canceled as well. The scholarship loss will sting ... especially coupled with the income loss we are experiencing.

We are allowed to whine about the challenges we face and the things we lose in this without negating the necessity of our societal efforts against the pandemic.

Honestly I bet there's a way to still apply and get that scholarship. Remember pretty much every senior is dealing with the same situation so there won't be many (or any) seniors who have completed 15 AP tests with scores of 4 or higher. The scholarship might take that into account and adjust its requirements. Worth finding out, in my opinion.

The sooner you let your child know that, yes it sucks, but there are far more worse things that will come about in life, the sooner they don't get a slap in the face from life once they graduate college. Unless, mommy and daddy is always going to be there to pick them up.

Well, depending on when the situation allows matches to resume, I wouldn't rule out the USTA trying to get some subset of Nationals in. Perhaps use the dates for Mixed (which are into November vs early October for the start of Adult) to try to get one of 18+ or 40+ Adult in and forgo the rest. If they did this, which would you like to see be the one that is played?

18+ and 55+. The majority of really good 40+ players already play 18+ and you don't run into any tiebreak nonsense at Nationals with the 4 courts for 40+

A little birdie told me that they are still hopeful to hold Nationals for all groups, but that many dates may be pushed back. The prevailing thought is to get a schedule out that works for most sections, and let the individual sections decide how they want to "get there". For some sections, its 'straight to Nationals', others there are 2 or 3 rounds, and it even changes within sections.

For MidAtlantic, Virginia & Maryland have a Regional round, then Sectionals. But DC teams go straight to Sectionals, so this delay has less of an impact on them. Heck, Northern VA used to have league play, followed by playoffs, then Regionals, then Sectionals.

Yes, it really varies by section how one advances to Nationals. Places like Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quick and easy. Local league play and a few playoff matches and you are there. At some levels, there aren't even any playoff matches.

But Mid-Atlantic like you say has numerous rounds normally, and areas like Middle-west and Eastern also have numerous rounds, and Southern has at least States prior to Sectionals and often a round or two of local playoffs to get to States. Throw in that for some divisions, play hadn't even started yet and so the calendar will be tight to get things in.

For example, in Southern last year, a number of states held their playoffs in June or earlier, and Sectionals were in July for 18+. 40+ was a similar schedule, just a week or so behind. That clearly isn't going to work if any leagues are still to be played and can't start/finish until May. But Southern does have a lot of leagues that are early start or just start earlier in the year due to better weather, so perhaps they can squeeze it in, or June and July can easily slip to July/August or even August/September.

Eastern held their Sectionals in August last year for both 18+ and 40+ with various local and regional playoffs in July. These local leagues are probably more impacted by the suspension of play and there will be 3-4 months of matches to be squeezed into 2 months.

In my area, 40+ was in its last weekend or two so still needs to be finished, and we would be starting our 18+ season right now without the suspension. Our season is usually 8-9 matches over 11-12 weeks, so even if it is compressed into 2 months, we are still into July and then we'd need to have local playoffs to determine who goes to Sectionals which are normally in early/mid August so very tight. But if Sectionals can now slip into September, perhaps doable.

Now, the good news is by pushing things back, perhaps hurricane season is over in Florida and we don't have weather issues again like we've had most every year at the National Campus!

Locally here, it is exactly the opposite. 18+ had 2 weeks left in the regular season and 40+ was just getting ready to start. Could be another headache trying to coordinate sectionals/nationals this year if the same type of local leagues didn't even get started from area to area.

Not that any of this matters all that much in the broader scheme of things.

This is the challenge, not all areas play leagues in the same order, so there isn't a blanket best way pick the order and when for Nationals that works well for all sections.

Eliminating all content from 3rd and 4th quarters

BUT here is the kicker

Rather than modifying it or anything else ... they just made it go away .... just like so much else these seniors have had go away.

Do not make the cure worse than the problem. Reaction and hysteria is far disproportionate to the threat!
Let's think positive and not dwell on worst-case scenarios.

Ummm...did you even read the article you linked? They're attributing the decline in new cases to "...some evidence that our community mitigation strategy — to close schools, restaurants and theaters, to prohibit gatherings — we think these things have slowed the rate of increase in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties,” Inslee said during a news conference Thursday".

Additionally..."At Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, about seven miles south of Kirkland, doctors have seen a recent uptick in cases, with about 20 to 30 positive tests a day, what they believe to be due to viral spread throughout the region before strict social-distancing policies took effect two weeks ago."

In other words, the article backs up everything California's governor wants to put in place: Shut down non-essential businesses, limit social gatherings, close schools.

Read the full article next time you try to reference something for your argument. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The article indicates signs of leveling off. This is after two weeks. And yet there is talk of a 6 months lockdown.
There is a huge difference between a 6 week shutdown and a 6 month shutdown that the Governor is salivating over. That will destroy the economy and lead to rampant homelessness, disease, crime and deaths.

The general consensus of my peers is let's play our own league as there's less benefit to do a USTA league if there's no postseason. They have proposed something with a point system for each line to avoid stacking. I hope there is at least something.

Ps. Our indoor clubs are still closed in Ohio.

UTR tourneys start this weekend, in Dallas they've had them for 2 weeks, next month most southern states start up, join the UTR revolution, if you tank in UTR, you get no benefit whatsoever.
