Paul Gascoigne's tears back in 1990 made him a hero to the English. This is one of my earliest football memories. Not sure about the photograph used on the countdown. One of those great talents in life that had his demons that put him on front and back pages.

Keep it coming.

My experiences are different from yours, but I'm subscribed to the blog. (y)

85. Ruud Gullit
The hair, the tache and some of that famous Dutch arrogance. A ballon d'or winner in 1987. Was before and during my time. Part of the dominate Milan team of the late 80s into the 90s. Earliest memory of Gullit was before I seen him. Think back to when you were a kid. Did you imagine yourself as a footballer scoring an important goal or saving a penalty?etc. I can remember in the school playground , I can't remember the exact details. 80s yo. But I can remember somebody scoring and then referring to themselves as Gullit. I did see for myself soon afterwards because I just had to see what all the fuss was about.

Taffarel would be the first name on this countdown to make me think, is he really top 100? I wouldn't have thought so. Yeah yeah, not my list.

90. Luigi Riva
Before my time.
riva2_original.jpg

Taffarel ahead of Batistuta does seem a bit weird.

I did like the short sleeve's he wore though (like Barthez). Growing up watching English football in the 90's, keepers wore jogging bottoms in the winter :p

Can't believe who we come to next. Not because he is there but because of his relationship with Gullit. ''I just knew from our first meeting that we weren't going to get along.'' This quote is from Alan Shearer talking about Ruud Gullit becoming his manager at Newcastle. And what about Shearer? He is the top scorer in the history of the premier league. Yes, that damn good. He's been talked about as another one that got away from United but he seems at ease with it and I can believe that. He says Alex Ferguson didn't call him back anyway. lol

Playing for his boyhood club, no doubt he had some of those dreams I talked about in the playground, dreams of scoring for your team. And he did get his hands on a premier league medal for Blackburn before he joined Newcastle. But, please don't take my Solskjaer away. :p

If someone had said to us this time last year that all sport would be cancelled, everyone was under house arrest (apart from a government mandated jog around the block, Soviet style), people were being arrested for having a BBQ and Boris Johnson was in intensive care after shaking someones hand.. all because a Chinese fella ate a bat? You'd think they'd lost the plot. On that theme..

Remembering England’s 2022 World Cup victory

The year is 2022. England, captained by Phil Foden, have just won the World Cup, ending 56 years of hurt

You wake up on 19 December 2022 with a thumping headache, surrounded by discarded pots of vindaloo.
It’s snowing outside. In fact it hasn’t stopped snowing since Donald Trump ordered two billion tonnes of fake snow to be dropped from space.
Then it hits you. You wonder if you were just dreaming. You turn on the tele-hologram in your front room to check it actually happened. Yep, England really did win the World Cup yesterday.

https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/371725/england-2022-world-cup-win/#
Of course this might all come as a bit of a shock.
So let’s jog your memory.
This is how England won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and ended 56 years of hurt.
https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/371725/england-2022-world-cup-win/#
Squad announcement
As expected, there were plenty of talking points when England’s co-managers Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard announced their squad for the World Cup.
Wayne Rooney’s continued revival at Salford City meant that he captained a youthful squad containing Premier League Golden Boot winner Rhian Brewster and Man City skipper Phil Foden.
Timmy Abraham beat his brother Tammy to the last striker spot, while Ryan and Steven Sessegnon were attempting to become the first brothers since Phil and Gary Neville to play for England at a World Cup.
But the stars of the show were undoubtedly Real Madrid’s Marcus Rashford and recent Ballon d’Or winner Harry Winks.

Of course, with every World Cup squad, injuries strike when you’re least expecting it.
Spurs false six Eric Dier’s hamstring injury in the FA Cup final against Forest Green meant Ronaldo Vieira was called up to the senior squad, having impressed during Leeds’ Champions League campaign.
Aside from that, England arrived in Qatar unscathed.

Group stages
Our group of France, Vanuatu and no.1 ranked Iceland drew mass outcries of panic when announced, but Gylfi Sigurdssonson and Eidur Gudjohnsenson’s injuries heading into the tournament weakened the favourites.
England, kitted out in a strip paying homage to the heroics of 1966, thumped Vanuatu 3-0 in the opening game.
Rashford scored the first before Harry Maguire enhanced his reputation as the world’s best free-kick specialist with two dead ball beauties.
https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/371725/england-2022-world-cup-win/#

As expected, the absence of Sigurdssonson and Gudjohnsenson, arguably the best Icelandic players since their fathers, made England’s task much easier, with Rashford and Brewster both scoring in a 2-0 win.
Finally it was time for France. The game looked like it was heading for a 0-0 draw before a trademark Foden run freed substitute Rooney to score a 90th minute winner.
He celebrated with his trademark move- whipping out a comb from his socks and running it through his long, luscious locks.

Knockout rounds
England survived an early goal from Adalberto Penaranda to see off Venezuela in the round of 16 thanks to a double from Rashford and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was still being booed by some fans after swapping Arsenal for Spurs on a free transfer.
Inevitably England then drew Wales, whose potent attack of Gareth Bale and Ben Woodburn had made light work of the tournament.
Step forward Jordan Pickford, who saved three penalties during the resulting shootout before smashing the final pen into the top corner wearing no boots.
England rumbled on into the semi-finals, where Lampard and Gerrard’s side faced Argentina.
https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/371725/england-2022-world-cup-win/#

Benjamin Aguero, who shocked the world by making the Argentina squad at 13, partnered Paulo Dybala with his dad Sergio watching on from the bench.
Step forward Harry Billy Winks. The 25-year-old was at the heart of everything positive about England, with a majestic through ball releasing Bayern Munich’s Jadon Sancho to make it 1-0.
Sergio came off the bench but, despite severe pressure from Argetnina’s father and son combination, England held firm.
https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/news-gossip/371725/england-2022-world-cup-win/#

Final time. England v Portugal. Ronaldo Vieira v Ronaldo.
Mikel Deaninho whistled to start the game, with England instantly on the back foot.
Cristiano Ronaldo made a mockery of the fact he was 36 by putting Portugal ahead.
Rashford struck back but, with the game in the 90th minute, extra-time beckoned.
Rooney switched the ball out to Sancho, who faked a rabona before being fouled on the edge of Portugal’s box.
Maguire stepped up, smashed the ball over the wall and off the crossbar, bouncing down onto the line.
Sir Mark Clattenburg, watching from his VAR station on Mars, awarded the goal, and England were crowned World Cup winners.
The rest, as they say, is history.

An oldie, but a goodie. It's best to read it from the link, I think. The pictures add something extra.

Yeah,I would have called you nuts. Guess nobody knows what the future holds is true enough.

That picture of Foden. :D

83. ''The gentle giant'' John Charles
He is before my time. One of those very very very very rare ''good boys.'' Not a single yellow or red card to his name. Sounded a little Brazilian with the lack of violence philosophy. I heard about a Brazil manager that would take you off if you made a dangerous looking tackle. This is why we call it the beautiful game, no?

I will use the countdown description when I don't know anything about a player.

82. Oleg Blohkin

Blohkin could be defined as the most successful product of the Soviet footballing system. An unstoppable force at Dinamo Kiev where he won the Ballon D’Or as well as eight Russian Championships, Speedy, a nickname given to dribbling and a potent but precise left foot, Blohkin is Russia’s all-time leading goal scorer with 42 goals, besides having appeared 112 times (also the record). Blokhin helmed the Dynamo side that won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1975 and 1986, scoring a goal in each final.

The final player of the night.

81. Jose Altafini
An attacker of potent physicality, Altafini possessed an astute eye for goal coupled with an impressive heading ability. Besides being one of very few to represent two different nations at the World Cup Finals (Brazil and Italy) Altafini was part of the '63 Milan side that won the rossoneri's first European title. He won two Scudetti with MIlan and two with Juventus, playing 459 games in Serie A and scoring 216 goals.

I wonder if he got invited to the same wedding as co-managers Lampard and Gerrard? I'm sure he could of got Coleen to give him a nice plaited up-do for the festivities. Sir Mark Clattenburg in charge of VAR on Mars might not of been there to witness though, unfortunately.

The countdown continues. Did you really think I'd put the effort into 20 and just give up? Not my style, ladies and gentlemen.

80. Jean-Pierre Papin
He played during my time. One of those ugly (but very very effective) footballers, I'm not talking about his looks. Papin is another player to hold the world record transfer fee back in the day. Milan bought him for 10 million from Marseille. And we can see here why they paid so much. A five time top goalscorer in a row in the French league and winning the league title 4 times in a row. He would finish as top scorer for Milan in his first season and help them win the league title. He would then move on to Bayern Munich, winning the UEFA cup in 1996.

79. Paolo Rossi
World champion in 1982 with the Italian national team, Paolo Rossi sealed his place in the history books with his sixth goal that won Italy the competition (and himself the Golden Ball). Only he, Mario Kempes and Ronaldo have won been World Cup winners, top scorers and Golden Ball recipients in the same year. His poacher's hat-trick against Brazil and the goal against West Germany in the final particularly stand out. At the club level with Juventus, he would win two Scudetti and the Champions Cup. In other news, he also participated in the most recent edition of the Italian version of Dancing with the Stars.

78. Zbigniew Boniek
Nicknamed "Dark Beauty," as he would play better in late-night European competition than domestic, Boniek was a thin, agile rocket of a midfielder. Notorious for rapid incursion from the wings, he was equally powerful with his left as his right foot. In the 1985 European Cup final against Liverpool, Boniek's incursion into the area drew the penalty that won Juventus the title.

77. Mario Kempes
1644522_original.jpg

Confusingly named both “The Bull” and “The Matador“ Kempes was nicknamed El toro and El Matador. An energetic whirlwind, Kempes would bewilder defenders by staying high and out of the box before surging forward at an opportune moment. Scoring 85 out of 105 appearances at local outfit Rosario Central, Kempes then moved to Valencia, where he won two consecutive Pichichi’s.
At Valencia, he won the Copa del Rey, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. For Argentina, he scored 43 caps for Argentina and scored 20 times, representing his country in three World Cups in 1974, 1978 and 1982 and winning the competition in 1978. He was the leading goal scorer in the 1978 tournament, scoring six goals, including two in the final itself. In ’78, he was voted South American Footballer of the year.
