RIP Irrfan Khan

The legendary Indian actor passed away today at the age of 53 after fighting a 2 year long battle with cancer. My Indian friends here would have definitely seen his work but how about others? He was in part of Hollywood movies like Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi, Inferno, Jurassic World, The Amazing Spider-Man etc.

One of the most talented and versatile actors India has ever produced, he was an even greater man!

Sounds like the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince. What is with these creative types?

In 2012, he changed his name from Irfan to Irrfan; he said he liked the sound of the extra r in his name. He later dropped Khan from his name because—according to a 2016 interview—he wanted his work to define him, not his lineage.

Must be the numerology blah blah.

Excellent actor with a body of work that could have been more comprehensive had he had more chances I believe, although great by itself. From TV to movies though, not easy to make the transition.

You don't need to subscribe to a religion to trust numerology. You just need to believe in anything and everything that promises to change your fortunes.

I was talking statistically. People of Muslim background are not into horoscopes, palmistry, numerology etc. for the most part.

Moreover, I strongly suspect that Irrfan was highly rational and secular and a skeptic.

LOL. Creative people that belong to the art world are more likely to be non-secular than secular. At the very least, they'll be highly spiritual. In any case, we don't know the truth.

Anyway, are Amir Khan, Sharukh Khan, Salman Khan etc. are all Muslims or have Muslim background?

Yes

That art world you are talking about is the old view where they used to paint religious scenes to suck up to the kings to earn a living etc. Creative people today are rebels against dogmatic ideas and hence the first targets of dictators are the arts, humanities and cinema.

Relationship with Islam
He would also refuse to take parts he felt had too close a religious or cultural connotation - declining roles in Deepa Mehta's Midnight's Children and Mira Nair's Reluctant Fundamentalist.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington, he found himself twice detained at Los Angeles airport because his name was similar to that of a terrorist suspect.

He tried to drop the family name Khan - preferring to be called simply Irrfan in the credits of his films. He also upset Muslim leaders by criticising animal sacrifice in Islam.

"We perform these rituals without knowing the meaning behind them," he said.

He was angrily advised to concentrate on his film career and refrain from making "random statements about our religion".

Looks like around 35 seconds into the Interview, he thanked the host, then the audience and then thanked someone up there. God knows who that might be.

Yes all the 3 major Khans are also known for their outward piety, in spite of one remaining unmarried and two marrying outside their religion. They throw huge ishtar parties and attend them too. It keeps them insulated from critics in their own religion and from other religions. It is especially important for Muslim actors in order to reduce risks and boost their acceptance. Those who don't play by the rules, like the openly atheistic songwriter Javed Akhtar, become the target of attack by all religions. Sania Mirza is a good example in sports.

Bollywood is a very complex world which has to navigate Indian society, politics and censorship, and also sell movies abroad in the huge market of Islamic countries, and also cater to Western stereotypes to get awards here and there.

Is Katrina Kaif Muslim too?

Wasn't Sharukh Khan once stopped at the JFK for having a Muslim name? Or maybe they thought he was a part of the terrorist attack back?

Who's the unmarried one? Salman Khan? And what is Ishtar party or did you mean Iftar party?

Katrina Kaif is not muslim, her father is a Kashmiri pandit(hindu) I believe

Yes SRK was stopped at JFK. Probably it was somewhere after 9/11 when paranoia had struck all Americans towards Muslims

And yeah Salman 'Bhai' is unmarried xD

I think Irrfan had turned partially Agnostic in the later part of his life. Nonetheless his work was beyond petty religious sentiment, glad he kept out of it.

According to Wiki - her father's name is Mohammed Kaif (a British businessman) and he's of Kashmiri descent while her mother is English?

And the last name Kaif sounds Muslim.

Unlikely as she's pretty open (based on some of the songs I've watched) but her mom is Christian so she has the option to go either way I suppose.

Her father must be pretty open for a Muslim if he's okay with Katrina's stuff. There are modern Muslims, of course.

Wonderful actor, saw lots of him several years ago when he had a recurring role on HBO psychotherapy drama "In Treatment"

A native of Calcutta and recent widower, Sunil has begrudgingly moved in with his son's family in Brooklyn. Unhappiness with his new life takes hold and festers within Sunil, exacerbated by his son's American wife, whom he suspects of having an affair. As Paul encourages him to voice his frustrations, Sunil reveals a dark, secretive past - a past that awakens potentially violent impulses.

@ollinger did you fancy yourself as Dr. Paul Weston treating Sunil? Like you fancy yourself playing with Federer?

Oh they all play by the rules including Javed Akhtar. They choose to. It keeps their money rolling. Infact unlike the past, the Islam actors get to 'keep' their original names now. Madhubala, Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari and many more - all these blockbuster stars had to change from their islamic names back in the 50's or 60's to ensure success in Bollywood It's a big shift today. They get the best of both worlds. The Khans get away with selling their movies in the middle east while enjoying continued success in India. With the underworld backing, it's a wonderful win-win for them. Why will they jeopardise by voicing anything political when they don't seem very aware about issues in the first place? None of these so-called 'artists' are free thinkers. They care purely about business.

As for Sania Mirza, she was given a fatwa by Muslim clerics for her dress....funny considering the deluge of scantily clad muslim women in bollywood ready to shed their outfits if it means putting more asses in the theatres.

You generalise too much. What you say is applicable for the three Khans (the stars) of whom Salman has particularly made sure to always appear on the side of whichever party is in power (he needs to, he should be in jail, as Trump would say). But it is not applicable for Javed Akhtar or Naseeruddin Shah; they have been outspoken and have taken heat from Twitter for doing so, especially in the current bizarre climate where Naseer is thought of as a terrorist by some because he played Ghulfam Hassan in Sarfarosh (yeah, not making this up). Irrfan didn't wade into either religion or politics one way or the other, so more like Sania Mirza.

@topic: RIP Irrfan, will be sorely missed. Only in the last decade or so did he finally get the roles he deserved to and the recognition along with. He did nothing but TV for a whole decade before Tigmanshu Dhulia finally showed other Bollywood filmmakers what Irrfan could do and then others like Vishal Bharadwaj began to sign him up.

Yeah was referring purely to the big stars hence my reference to 50's stars too (DK, Madhubala etc). They are the ones with the maximum influence and reach. How many are really going to listen to Naseer or Irrfan? These are arthouse actors. All the big stars do play it safe, just like the big three in tennis.

I really don't know much about twitter. I barely read what opinions people from film or sports world hold. Besides, I find the reactions too toxic for my taste. What a bunch of people type on twitter - should we really be extrapolating it to society in general? After Amir's comments on moving out of India, apparently many called him out on social media. End result? Next movie was a blockbuster.

That is a different matter. My point was that Naseer or Javed weren't trying to play both sides and get the best of both worlds. Javed in particular has been atheist despite belonging to a religion where doing so attracts maximum heat. He has said he loves it when he gets criticised by hardliners from both sides because that means he must be doing something right. Javed was married to a Parsi at first before marrying Shabana and Naseer to Rathna Pathak. In that way, the Khans are also secular but they do more religious show sha because they have much more wealth and their agenda is different. Both Aamir and SRK did in fact voice criticism against intolerance early in Modi's tenure but seeing as it attracted too much backlash, they decided to play it cool. Salman OTOH moved very early to chant Modiji Modiji and stay on his right side.

Flying kites keeps you away from jail, no? :) (btw, I really like him lol) - srk has significant clout with the Gandhis too. At one point it was conjectured that he would field politics from that end. I think being political comes easy to actors. Voicing opinions hits their moolah. They prefer the latter and nothing wrong in that per se. Protecting own interests. Most would indeed do that.

I don't know if their marrying outside of their religious ideologies means much - Swami for instance is married to a Parsi and his daughter is married to a muslim. What I am getting to is that in this age of social media we jump to placing labels on people too easily and many reactions are too jarring as well.

End of the day sports or movies, at least I seek entertainment. You see what's happening to Sandgren for example. We expect too much from people I think, in general :)
