Watching the Bundesliga in the last ten days, it feels almost spooky watching these games with no fans. I had the displeasure to see something like that three years ago when Barcelona played La Liga in an empty Camp Nou on the day of Catalan referendum. But health/safety first, and we will still get something more to distract us from this mess we are all in. Lord knows we need it now more than we have needed it in a long time.

Beautiful goal from Kimmich to win the game against Dortmund. The result itself felt inevitable though, and credit to Bayern for stepping up when they needed it the most again. Last season they were trailing by a lot of points, and they were in a similar position this season as well, yet they will win Bundesliga again. Was hoping a miracle Dortmund comeback would happen. After all, yesterday marked 21 years since Manchester's incredible turnaround at our stadium against Bayern in the Champions League final. :p But they have been the boss in Germany for such a long time.

As for La Liga, it's scheduled to continue in the second week of June, the Andalusian derby between Sevilla and Betis being the first game. Going to be more condensed now as everyone wants to get back on track, finish the Europa League and Champions League during the summer too and start next season normally. Our competition has been hit harder than other leagues by the pandemic as far as the title race is concerned. Barcelona two points ahead of Real Madrid, with plenty of lead changes until now. Finishing the season without fans to push the players is going to feel anticlimactic for not just the two great rivals but everyone else. But both contenders are motivated to win domestically, especially with our current European struggles. This break was a blessing in disguise in certain aspects, as Barcelona can count on Suarez now again. He was likely to miss most of this season but these unique circumstances will now allow him to contribute a lot more than previously expected. Same goes for Hazard in Real Madrid, though he hasn't hit the ground running there yet so he's a bigger question mark than even Suarez who had a knee surgery.
Welcome back man!

I stopped hoping for something different to happen in Germany a while ago. Monotony central.

Spanish league is the one I am looking forward to because it's dramatic. In Germany and England it's just delaying of the inevitable.

As I was expecting, the premier league gets the go ahead for full contact training. Yes, we have the winner of the league already but I'm just keen to see United again more than anything else.

Even though there is big gap, I have to be impressed with Bayern and Dortmund. Both got a good mix of experience and youth. Commentator making it sound like time is up for the Dortmund boss. How he has been backed with all the transfers he wants and sales he wants but he just can't get it done. I think Dortmund were a bit hard done by yesterday. Boateng was lucky, his arm moved and he got elbow on the ball. Clear penalty ignored.

Thanks. It's nice to be back. Missed all the posters in this thread and of course the lads. Hope they are all coping well and still regular with the chats.

Obviously in England it's over, but I am still interested to see how Manchester United, Chelsea, Wolves and Sheffield do in their remaining games...

Good to have you back!

I'm done with football for this season, personally. Games in empty stadiums, after a 4 month break, with players who should be out of contract, players who were injured for the remainder of the season now suddenly being able to play and impact European spots, titles, relegations etc.. It's not finishing the season, what happens in June under those conditions has zero correlation to the season that started in August 2019. The integrity has gone, unfortunately.

Yeah, I hear ya and can understand your POV.

For me, I just want to see United playing again. Things were suddenly looking a bit brighter after so much rubbish. If it was a simple is it fair or not then I'd have to say it isn't fair. Then somebody will probably say life isn't fair. We have Pogba and Rashford taking part in full training even though Rashford was done for this season. etc

Latest news says Shanghai are open to negotiating a deal to let Ighalo stay at United until next January.

I'm thinking Martinez will go to Barcelona. Barcelona is into paying the huge fees these days. Inter won't let him go unless the release clause is paid in full. It makes sense.

I'd snap Werner up in a heartbeat if I was Liverpool. His release clause is a lot cheaper as well.

At this stage, with the original start date for next season being only a few weeks away (PL starting up again at the end of June, next season starting mid August), football would be back fairly soon anyway. I miss football too, I want the game that we all love back again as soon as possible. The way they're doing it is actually going to mean that takes longer. 1/3 of a season played in the summer with zero competitive integrity, an impacted following season starting soon after, Euro's next summer, winter World Cup etc.. It could take years to get back to how things were before all this. Starting next season as it was supposed to in August could achieve it straight away though.

A pretty big gain for waiting an extra 6 weeks, but yeah. The financial argument doesn't even make sense anymore as they're saying the PL will have to pay back £350 Million as it is, no revenue from match days in empty stadiums etc..

As for the transfers, Werner is an interesting one. Liverpool does sound like a good fit, and the move he wants. I also think Liverpool would be in prime position to get Haaland in a year or so. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited for him instead. Not sure what that would mean for Werner though. Stay put maybe? Bayern? Man Utd?

Sancho seems to be the other interesting one. Either staying put, or again, Bayern or Man Utd seems to be the most likely. Maybe United as he seems keen to return to England.

Martinez looks like being the other big one, but as you say, Barcelona are the only team you can see him going to. That one seems reliant on financials and players moving in the opposite direction though.

@Feña14 is indifferent about it all :p but we're back on June 17th.

With 92 Premier League matches of the current season remaining, Sky Sports subscribers will be able to watch 39 exclusive live games with a further 25 available more widely via Sky's free-to-air 'Pick' Channel and simulcast on Sky Sports, allowing the whole nation to be part of the return of live sport.

I'd say that the free games are a nice thought but then I'm paying for the channel already so not really.

Yeah, not for me thanks!

There's so much sport about to start, ones where the integrity of the competition is intact (full international cricket summer looks like it's happening, MotoGP and F1 starting their seasons soon etc..). Should be good!

I'd say i'll be back for the football in August but, apparently last years Champions League will still be going on lol. So September it is.

The selfish Ronnie O'Sullivan fan in me is hoping that with more time off relaxing, running and writing, he could make a decent run at the world championship again. I'm hearing it could be starting a day after our birthday although nothing has been confirmed yet.

Nice! It's going to be strange seeing some of these events at odd times of the year. The Snooker final being on bank holiday Monday in May has always been special, there's talk of holding the Masters (golf) in November! I've always seen it as an Easter tradition in early Spring. Watching it before doing some Christmas shopping is going to be weird :-D

I wonder if there will be any games on our birthday this year? Season is supposed to run until end of July, I believe. Friday night games seem to be part of it too. I'm used to watching Chelsea playing the "Singha All-Stars" in Bangkok in a pre season friendly on my birthday, this year they're supposed to play Liverpool at Anfield (their final home game) on the penultimate weekend. So could be where they lift the trophy. Bit of a difference!

Not quite the same with the leagues below the premier. A total of 17 people from EFL clubs have tested positive for coronavirus in the latest round of testing.

You look at Bayern's team and then see them in for Sane and Havertz. Scary.

Harry Redknapp looking to get back in football. Why not?

Well, ya know, it says John Hartson cost this much or that much but they don't understand how to wheel and deal, ya know. 2 million of that price is if we win the European cup. Another million is if I score the winner.

Big news big news. The tragedy has not robbed us totally.

Ighalo deal has been extended until January.

That's more like it from United.

The fancy signings with all the talent in the world get the headlines, but you can't beat having someone who truly wants to be there and gives 100% every game.

He's playing the Giroud role, I guess. There's real value in that.

I see Werner looks like it might be down to United and Chelsea, with Liverpool having reservations (sights set on Haaland next year when things have settled, would be my guess). I'm hoping we steer clear, personally. He looks a great player but his heart is set on Liverpool.

Yeah, Fernandes getting all the headlines but Ighalo has impressed me. Old fashioned playing for the shirt. I think it would have been easy for United to not bother sjnce Rashford will probably be good to go once it starts. I'm glad they did. They've obviously paid some attention.

Give us Werner now. haha

Fernandes seems to be an old fashioned player who plays for the shirt, wants to be there and has all the talent in the world. That's the ideal. Ighalo has similar qualities... just nowhere near as talented :p

You're welcome to Werner! Chilwell seems to be the only player we're realistically linked with (you can ignore the Sancho, Havertz, Werner silly gossip). Not a big fan of Chilwell though, unfortunately. Tagliafico costs 1/4 of the price, that seems more sensible. He's got a good understanding with Ziyech down the left too, so that makes more sense imo.

No, Manchester United left a historic club 10 miles up the road drown and die due to financial debt when they were giving Sanchez 300k a week to sit on the bench. They aren’t much better.

With VAR they were getting close to 10 minutes of injury time at the end of games, it’ll be closer to 15 with that many subs :-D

Werner to Chelsea look imminent, according to reports in Germany. I’m guessing it’s agent talk to get Liverpool to the table.

Aston Villa take on Sheffield United in the first live game of the restart on Wednesday, June 17 (6pm kick-off) followed by Mikel Arteta's Arsenal up against his former boss Pep Guardiola and Manchester City at 8.15pm.

Two days later, Friday Night Football will see Norwich and Southampton as the first game on Sky free-to-air channel Pick, with Manchester United also taking on their former manager Jose Mourinho and Tottenham later that night - coverage exclusively on Sky Sports - in another double-header.

(Yeah, they ain't giving United and Spurs away for free. )

I'd say Ziyech is better signing than Werner. Chelsea has problems opening teams sitting deep, Hakim might be the key. Werner wouldn't hurt, obviously, but he's much more a counter attack type of forward. He will complement Abrahams style of play nicely and can lead the line, too, if necessary.

Agreed, Ziyech was the player I wanted. He's got an absolute wand of a left foot, his set pieces and crossing abilities are incredible, the number of assists speaks for itself. That's what Chelsea were really missing. Abraham was doing well, but he wasn't getting any service from Willian.

Werner likes to play wide too, he doesn't do well with his back towards goal as the main forward, as you mentioned. So he should be the perfect compliment to Abraham, whilst scoring a lot more than Willian.

Comparing stats:

Werner 40 games, 31 goals, 12 assists
Ziyech 31 games, 8 goals, 21 assists

Willian 35 games, 6 goals, 6 assists

Looks like the transfer ban could be the best thing that ever happened. Lampard arriving as manager, going with youth (Abraham, Mount, James, Gilmour etc..), now with a volatile market where people are understandably tentative about making big moves, Chelsea have close to £150 Million to spend after selling Hazard, Morata etc.. if we had spent that money last summer? I'm guessing we wouldn't of got the kind of players we could this summer.

Werner is a great buy, too. His work rate is impressive and he can score goals left, right and centre. Not even talking about his speed...truly an all round attacker like Mané. I hope Mount and Pulisic will up their game and Chelsea will be a contender once again. If they can keep hold of Kanté, somehow make Kepa believe in himself again and add Chilwell on the left flank they will like their chances, I'm sure.

Yes, the climate is somehow ideal for those who identified their targets early and have the resources ready. Well done Chelsea.

Yeah Chelsea were in the market to replace the ageing and departing Pedro and Willian, they also needed a striker to lighten the load on Abraham. Werner sounds like he fills both of those roles, two players for the price of one kind of thing. I've heard the Mane comparisons, which sounds good to me.

Chilwell concerns me a bit. Lampard seems to really want him and he's earned the backing of the club, but £85 Million? Doesn't sound like the most sensible of options, time will tell though.

Ha, yes, I'm not sure we can give Chelsea the credit for selling off players to build a war chest and get themselves a two transfer window ban because they knew a global pandemic was coming and they could take advantage :p if they did know that, that would be pretty impressive. One thing that has been coming out about Ziyech and Werner is the role Lampard and Cech have played, meeting both players in person, setting out their vision, taking an interest in the person and their families as opposed to it being a straight up business transaction. It sounds like the personal touch played a role in getting both players.

It's always hard to shop within the EPL, those prices are sky high. Leicester can't be bothered to sell unless their valuation is met so it's never going to be an easy way. It's good to hear about that personal touch, makes a world of a difference when you know you are being cared for on a personal level.

La Liga resumes tomorrow with the Andalusian derby. 3rd place Sevilla hosting a struggling mid table Real Betis. Barcelona will face Mallorca away on Saturday.

Eleven matchdays left and everything is tight. Barcelona lead Real Madrid by two points at the top. Two points separate third and sixth as Sevilla, Sociedad, Getafe and Atletico fighting for Champions League spots, with Valencia lurking three points below. Relegation is also tough to call with six teams in obvious danger at the moment.

Starting from next weekend, there will be multiple matches every day for the next month. Under such circumstances surely you can tune in every now and then, Englishmen. ;)

Time for some summer club action. Even in this currently phantasmal crowd-less form, it's nicer to have the sport distraction back than not.

a.png

In other news, the Champions League might end up being an eight team tournament held in one venue behind closed doors, and Lisbon is the favorite for that position should such format take place. It's unclear if the last 16 ties that are yet to be completed (Barcelona vs Napoli, City vs Real Madrid, Juventus vs Lyon, Bayern vs Chelsea) will also be held there or not. Teams that have to play the 2nd leg at home don't want to give up the home ground advantage, although plenty of it is already lost with fans not being allowed to attend. Decision will be made by UEFA's executive committee next week.

It's going to be so weird seeing such a format if it happens. From a neutral's point of view though it could turn out to be an amazing spectacle as in one game anything is possible. Atletico have been desperately trying for years, maybe they finally lift the curse after taking out Liverpool. Or maybe Atalanta's fairytale continues even further, or Leipzig born literally 30 years ago make Bundesliga prouder than Bayern have in recent years... Or perhaps empty stadiums is just what Barcelona needed after getting sucked into the Olimpico and Anfield atmosphere wormholes in the previous two years? Anyway with Liverpool out and hopefully Real and Juve joining them it would be a guaranteed great ending of the tournament in any shape or form.

Oh and it's a similar plan for the Europa League, which will most likely be held in Germany. Go United. :p
