A new statement about THAT TOPIC from Novak

Honestly, I think he could've had this tournament go completely fine if he had excluded spectators and tested the players before they started playing. It seems as if he wanted to make it a spectacle, to spread some kind of message or whatever, and he really messed up. Wertheim uses the word hubris and I think that's an apt description of what transpired.

The health protocols mandated by local health authorities, obviously. Believe or not, some places have looser restrictions than others

And that makes it...what? Less dumb? As if they couldn't be influenced or as if they have any clue as to how to deal with it, other than you know - distancing and not packing people into stadiums.

Absolving Djokovic of this dumbassery by hiding behind / talking about that Russian puppet country's health officials, is not going to work.

When doctors used to say a cigarette a day improves your health, you just nodded in agreement and said well, the health officials said...

I see the PR team realized their mistake and made a more sensible statement.

good.
Looks like someone with some kind of sense got to him. That’s a better statement. Still not great but better. There was an “I’m sorry” in there.

He apologised at the end of the first statement, which as you can guess got cropped in all journalist tweets and instagram posts. Though he really doesn't seem to be to worried about this virus. And I don't mean that he thought he won't get it, but didn't care at all. Was he making another bet right now? We probably won't ever know, but judging from that horrible analysis from sports ilustrated I doubt anyone cares.
Hoping for a speedy recovery of all infected and for more use of technology in tennis. And no kids or anyone passing towels please, now's a perfect time to get rid of that.

What if there's never a vaccine or like the flu vaccine, it isn't 100% effective, what then? When would be the right time to open up in that situation? In the US, the reason to shut everything down in March was to make sure hospitals weren't overwhelmed by sick people all showing up at once but there's evidence that it was already in the US in December of 2019. So this may be the second wave, not the first.
In 2019 in the US 80,000 people died of flu related causes, and that's with a vaccine...

Finally he's expressing remorse on his reckless actions and rightfully accepting the blame. Doesn't undo the damage he caused, but this is a positive and acceptable response.

Very eloquent response written by his PR team, after reading the comments about his initial statement.

It seems like most important thing for 99% of ppl is to hear Novaxx apologize for having guts to organize tennis tournament in country with looser medical policy.
If thats the case, then there you have it, he said hes sorry.
But instead of admiting being gutless to support/take part of/send positive vibes, ppl were eager to say : aha, we told ya it aint gonna work, you moron ... at the end of it all ....
So ... being politucaly correct, staying put, head in the sand, and have do what they told ya attitude is more important than trying to move things and do something diferent ....
And dont guve me that hes iresponsible, thinking hes bigger than God, ppl lives matters crap ...

You better ask WHO and other authorities why they use false test for something they havent isolated

What health protocols?!?! No one wearing masks, nearly full stands. What a joke of a sentence... “we believe the tournament met all health protocols” What a clown

"We believe the tournament met all health protocols."

That rubbish was written by a lawyer to cover their asses.

The players were constantly hugging each other on the court. Must practice distancing. Very simple for a player to do that on a court.

It does not even appear that players were tested prior to every match. That will be the protocol at the US Open.

I often don't agree with Wertheim, I was just pointing out the level of vitriol out there for Djokovic right now and it's justly deserved, IMO. My main beef is that he was so spectacularly arrogant (and stupid) to blandly say, "I'm fine, I have no symptoms," two days ago when he still could spread the virus to a vulnerable person who could then conceivably die from it. This has nothing to do with fandom, since I would have the exact same reaction had Roger done all this.
In fact, since I like Fed as a player, I would have verbally crucified him for doing the same thing. I tend to hold back when talking about Novak, to try to be fair.

asymptomatic carriers shed so little of the virus, so the risks and consequences you allude to are greatly over stated. The fact that all players are asymptomatic should tell you something about either how the virus is evolving or the threats of the virus to begin with.

the risk that asymptomatic carriers pose is one of the myths currently being busted.

I wouldn't read too much into that since these are athletes who are supremely fit and healthy. Their bodies will obviously be much better at beating the virus.

The point is they are not going to be shedding it. Asymptomatic carriers are not the risk they have been made out to be.

Not really it's just that asymptomatic and presymptomatic people are consistently mixed up.

That big doofus gave it to sweet, Innocent Nole?
Maybe. One of basketball players who participated in the an exhibition basketball game in Belgrade on June 11th, Nikola Jankovic, was tested positive for the virus on June 15th. N.Jokic pictured hugging Djoko, was reportedly in close proximity to N.Jankovic. It's unclear if the two basketball players had any physical contact.

It is always good to be hopeful...but hurts soooo much when your hopes crash
Get well soon, and only come back when at full strength, we don't want somebody else winning the slams and be tainted with the ineluctable weak era claim in the absence of his eminence, the inscrutable Novak.

A few months ago we were told that asymptomatic transmission was not a primary driver of infection...

Latest statement from the WHO.
