Toni says a UO skip could be in the cards

You don't get a source. He said it.

I'm sure Nadal will play, especially if Djokovic is not able to recover in time. He doesn't want to miss out on a chance like this.

“I have spoken to Rafa and he is doubting which tournaments to play,” Toni Nadal, Rafa’s uncle and former coach, told ESPN Deportes.

The schedule is unrealistic, especially for veteran players, who cannot compete for so many weeks in a row.’

“I think it is a bit ugly what the ATP has done. This decision is totally against players like Rafa and Novak

"With everything they have done for tennis for years, I am surprised that they do this.

“I think it would be key to raise something regarding the calendar because it is not feasible to concentrate so many tournaments in such a short time.”

In the scheduling I think it comes down to Madrid vs USO, not RG vs USO - the latter would be an easy choice for Rafa.

Rafa and his camp can't come out and say they are choosing USO over Madrid, they're too patriotic for that. I think they play USO anyways and skip Madrid if Rafa makes the 2nd week, but they'll have to hem and haw over it as Madrid is Rafa's national tournament.

Exactly why I think that if the schedules goes forward as it's been released, then the Nadal camp might skip the hardcourts in North America and just focus on the European Clay. Travel would be much easier and faster between Madrid/Rome/RG, and not having to switch surfaces and continents/timezones would be a huge benefit. Not to mention he's the king of clay, so why even both with the hardcourts in a jam packed schedule?

I definitely see Raffa also skipping the USO if Djokovic is somehow not going to be there.

Right now Ruffa doesn't want to be out there doing nothing while Djoko gets close on the slam count. But if Djoker goes AWOL then Nadal will join him.

I think the main unknown here is the real recovery time of a really deep Slam win.

Well, the two week time span between the two is the historical amount between RG and Wimby, no? The big differences are (1) Cramming two M1000's in Rome and Madrid in there, and (2) RG being the second slam, not Wimby.

I think the obvious result is many who make the 2nd week of the USO will skip one or both of Madrid/Rome. Clay being the 2nd surface could actually work in Rafa's favor or Novak's, if we're talking about a unique Atlantic "Channel" Slam (Atlantis slam?), but that's only if their form and stamina is up enough to be competitive in both slams.

Well, I think at this point it's all about prioritizing which events you feel like give you the best chance of winning. With only 2 weeks between the US Open and the French Open, it's hard to imagine Rafa/Djokovic really being ready to compete after making a deep run in New York or winning the title. Hard to believe you can win a title or play for a title on Sunday, then immediately fly back to Europe and what, either play another event immediately after the USO or wait and play Rome the week before the French. Neither situation is ideal, and I gotta believe Rafa/Novak would like to get at least one clay event in before RG.

I hope the big three stay away

I am tired of all of them for all kinds of various reasons by this point. Not sure any Covid reaction has been a net positive for any of them either.

If anything just give us some crazy ass winner of the first major back.

Its time to change the guard for effing sake

Totally agree. I don't see Nadal taking a chance. He may show up for UO, but I don't expect a deep run as it would jeopardize clay for him.

Madrid and UO definitely clash with this schedule. Seems to me that Nadal would want more time out there on clay than just Rome. Decisions....

with three weeks between the two I think he can handle it. Just dont take the masters 1000 too seriously

Rafa is concerned about playing consecutive weeks.
That means he will play the US Open, and skip either Madrid or Rome.

I think Nadal can play US open, then skip both Madrid and Rome.

In recent some years, after Roland Garros, he can play well at Wimbledon by skipping all preparation grass tournaments. Why can’t he play well at Roland Garros - his favorite Slam - without Madrid and Rome?

In 2013, he used to play extremely well at Final of Davis Cup on clay just some days after US open. With his present experience, he doesn’t need to prepare too much for Roland Garros I think.

If this was 10 years ago, I'd say yes. But a 34 year old Rafa. No freaking way.
Yeah but how much time would a player typically take off after a deep slam run. Maybe 1-2 weeks? I don't think it is expecting too much for him to play 2 slams with only 3 weeks between. He obviously won't play kitzbuhel but he should at least get 5-6 matches between the two masters

I'm sure my post is being reported right now. For a vile fanbase that carries on and on with 40:15 and pictures of some lady holding a finger, they sure do cry a lot and wave the victim card when their idol (*****) brings about valid criticism with his idiotic ideas and irresponsible actions.
Lol who is doing this? Name names. Strawman. 99% of Djoker fans have been shredding him the past week.

Would Rafa, with his OCD, even consider coming to the US Open, with the Covid vortex still vortexing?
AND, would Thiem be accepted to attend after his Covid exposure and subsequent gallavanting?

Curious minds want to know.

You've been great, Vex, and fair. But it's not anywhere near 99%, it's more like 70%. You have the fringe f--ks out in force, still posting 40-15 endlessly and saying it's not Nole's fault.

As noted by Beatlesfan, you're one of the few who has not blindly fallen in line with the "it was Dimi, the government's, Fed's fault and ***** didn't force anyone to go did he" crowd.

I have most n0vaxfans on my ignore list .. and I'm still seeing the whinging and whining about how he was trying to do something great and everyone is being soooo unfair.

Rafa proved he can play a hardcourt slam without any lead-up events, as he did in 2019 with the Australian Open, and he was coming off ankle surgery rehab and still made the AO Final without lead-up events!
So maybe Rafa should skip Cincy, and then he should have enough energy to play the US Open and Madrid and/or Rome.
I know playing consecutive events seems like a lot, but he'll be fresher than ever before the US Open, so it may be possible, especially if he wins all his clay matches in straight sets.
