Roger Federer: Why His Grand Slam Record Will Stand Forever

vex

Legend
It doesn't seem to have sunk in to Fedfans that Federer has NO records that are unlikely to be broken. How on earth can he be the greatest of all time? How?

From the article"
"With an insurmountable quantity of records to his name, he appears to be the greatest player of all-time to many spectators and tennis followers."

Which quantity of insurmountable records is he referring to? I would love to know. It's all a figment of someone's imagination.

If any Fedfans can let me know I will stand corrected that IMO, Federer only has 2 records worth talking about:

1. Weeks at number 1
2. Number of slams
Right now he is objectively the greatest. Both Rafa and Novak can catch him but there are no guarantees. Djokovic has looked very vulnerable against Thiem/Med/Tsits even Zvev at times. It won’t be a cakewalk for him. Rafa has a Djokovic problem off-clay. Who knows if either trend will continue. All these guys are already defying time and could face a massive decline at any time. Rafa also has to get to 21 minimum, probably 22 really considering Fed’s resume beyond the slams.

True it is. Just shows the true nature of general fans who latch on to the numbers that suit their stories best. Fed fans always brought the slam count while Nadal fans would show the H2H saying slam is not the be all end all. Now with Nadal just 1 slam short Fed fans are trying to downplay the slam count a bit.
This Nadal fan has never used h2h as the defining factor for GOAT. There is far more depth in tennis than simply choosing one or two things that favour a particular player. Listed below are the achievements that I think sets Rafa apart from the rest and, if there is to be a GOAT, makes him the front runner. If anyone thinks their favourite can better Nadal's amazing achievements, please feel free to list them.

Won 12 titles at the same slam
Won 11 M1000 titles at one event
Won 11 500 titles at the same event
Had 10 consecutive years of winning a slam
Simultaneously holds of Olympic singles gold medal and Majors on clay, grass, and hard court
Have achieved the Career Grand Slam + Olympic Singles Gold medal + Olympic Doubles Gold Medal

Won a Career Grand Slam (aged 24)
Achieved a Career Golden Slam (aged 24)
Have an overall match win on any court percentage of 91.79% (436-39)
Has won an Olympic gold medal in singles and an Olympic gold medal in doubles in two separate Olympics in Open Era
Has won on a Masters 1000 and slam for four consecutive years (2005-2008)
Has won 8 consecutive titles at any single tournament
Has a 46 match win streak at any single tournament
Has a win streak of 81 on any surface
Has won 11 titles at three different tournaments

I suppose it's worth remembering that no matter how close Nadal and Djokovic are, Federer's slam record remains for now, and for who knows how long thereafter. At some point the greats cease to be competitive over two-week events. No one thought it would happen to Serena, until it did.

Yes Nadal's record at the WTF is pretty impressive. Injury has been his biggest opponent at the WTF. Look how many times he's missed it and played injured.

Nadal owns the Open era record of most consecutive years qualifying for the year-end ATP Finals at 15 years in a row.

I'm assuming all the RRs are there to denote where Humblito was injured. Maybe it stands for Retroactively Ruined?

Federer is 3rd in the GOAT race, if only his fans would accept that. He's been around for 22 years and trailing in M1000s and average slam win per year among other things.

Are you saying Fedr is trailing in
- moral wins
- weeks at #1
- WTF titles

lol, no, I am teasing you that Mr. Humbalito is the champion of moral wins.

And I was wondering whether Fed is trailing not only in big titles per year but as well in weeks at #1, WTF titles, and anything else?

Fed also trails in retirements, tactical MTOs, time violations and general weapons grade bullsh¦t.
No. Fedr is the King of tactical MTOs and toilet breaks.

Roger Federer: Injury Timeouts Are More Mental, But He Took One So I Did Too

Q. You said on the court you never take the timeouts. That’s kind of a new turn for you. Did it help to give you a chance to clear your head before the fifth set?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I think these injury timeouts, I think they’re more mental than anything else. Okay, normally you would have to do it on court. If you do groin or something like that, or a tape way up there, you have to go off court.

For the first time maybe during a match you can actually talk to someone, even if it’s just a physio. We know him well. It maybe relaxed Stan, you know, just to be able to talk about I don’t know what. The same thing for me, as well. You start chatting about it, how good or bad the leg is, how you hope it’s going to turn around. That can leave a positive effect on you when you come back.

I only really did take the timeout because I thought, He took one already, maybe I can take one for a change, because I’m not a believer in any way that we should be allowed to take a lot of timeouts. But I took it after the set break.

Yeah, people know I don’t abuse the system. I hope it’s going to stay that way in the future for me, too.

Roger Federer once used one to wait for the sun to move, after losing the first set of a 2010 Australian Open quarterfinal match against Nikolay Davydenko.

“When the sun comes from the side, the ball seems half the size and is just hard to hit,” Federer explained after rallying to win. “I never take toilet breaks. But I thought, Why not? I just hoped with every minute it took, the sun would move another centimeter.”

Roger Federer took an aptly timed medical timeout during his Australian Open clash with Tennys Sandgren. The world No 3 claimed to be struggling with his groin as he headed for off-court treatment which took nine minutes.

The Swiss star had just lost the second set and was 3-0 down in the third when he called for the physio.

That's all you have to cling on to.

When you qualify 15 times at the WTF

5 times you don't show up
5 times you lose RR
5 times you reach SF F and of course not winning the event....that's terrible.

Even Kuerten Corretja Zverev Dimitrov Tsitsipas have been able to win that event........

Nadal wins events on HC when he plays mostly nobodies like his USO wins....

On the other side Fed and Novak have won the WTF 6 and 5 times....

Still you can't take away Nadal's achievement on clay....

So Djokovic is a nobody according to you, losing twice to Rafa in USO finals? You probably think Federer is also a nobody losing to Rafa in the AO final.

Novak in 2010 was far from being brilliant......He almost lost 1st round at the Open. Nadal had a great year in 2010 because Fed was not great and Novak wasnot Novak yet. Still Nadal lost to many ramdom players that year like garcia lopez...

2013: Novak played terrible in that final.....Last set that Nadal won on HC against Novak....

Beating Simon Lopez Gasquet Youznhy almost losing to Medvedev.....

You are saying Novak playing terrible tennis is better than Rafa missing the WTF and not at his best because of injury. You couldn't make it up. So what was Djokovic's excuse for losing to Stan in the 2016 Final? Or losing to Nishikori in the 2014 semifinal? Nadal has made the final of the USO 5 times and 4 times he's won the title. Just one less than Sampras and Roger to date.

Just accept that Rafa has far more insurmountable records than Djokovic and Federer. You can't argue with the facts.

Four examples, three of which took place when Federer was over 35 years old. It's also very telling that he seems candid as to the motivation, while Nadal would throw up injury claims that rarely manifested as any form of hindrance. Not to mention the timing of his interruptions was often preposterous.

Anyway, trawling through Nadal's escapades over the years would be like looking for photographs of the sky to prove clouds, so your 'level' will remain exclusive to you for now.

The irony that you're directly contrasting this against accusations made against Nadal, of all players, cannot be overstated. It's downright comical. 'At least Roger is honest about it'... Sums it up rather nicely.
Just show me any evidence when Nadal has taken an MTO for strategic reasons.

There is always that one person who refuses to accept reality.

Rafa could be GOAT or he could end up in third. The final standing of the big three is completely up in the air. Right now Fed is undeniably in the lead not just with the slam count but with the massive gap he’s built Weeks, WTFs and all the finals he’s reached in his post 35 age seasons.

Rafa could catch him but he has a lot of work to do and could get blocked by Djokovic.

Djokovic has the non-slam resume to catch Fed with just 20 slams but there’s no guarantee Djoker has 3 more slams in him.

The finish is going to be exciting. Djoker and Rafa both have work to do

Unfortunately Nadal's nefariousness has left his supposed integrity in a somewhat infalsifiable position. Like all the crooks and charlatans who blatantly use cold reading techniques but can play both successes and failures off as being due to 'spiritual influences' or some other sh¦te. There's plenty of evidence ('oh wait, my crippling pain has vanished'), just nothing hard enough to shake your confirmation-bias coconuts from the tree and get you to admit what you're probably already sure of anyway.

This is a good example of how a player should behave if they have an issue with an umpire not attack the umpire with obscene language. Rafa followed the correct procedure by reporting Carlos to the ATP and asked for Carlos not to call his matches for a while. The ATP investigated the complaint, found in Rafa's favour and banned Carlos from his matches for 10 months. Exemplary conduct by Rafa.

According to @clayqueen logic, Nadal is only good on clay. Fortunately, this is far from the truth. He is indisputably the greatest clay court player of all time with tremendous results on hard and grass courts. Kind of sad to see this user exposed so hard. Hope he/she can evict Federer from his/her head very soon. He isn't even paying rent.
