French Open to allow fans in at 50-60 percent capacity

I don't think it's that crazy, actually. We've yet to see a big spike from the BLM protests which suggests that outdoor activities may not be so dangerous even in packed crowds as long as everyone wears a mask. Granted the RG crowd will likely be older which should give anyone some pause, but remember that 6 feet is less a rigid scientific rule than a general guideline and being a seat apart from each other may be enough for an event which probably won't be filled to 50% capacity most of the time to begin with.

P.S. There should be no crowd on rainy days (read: indoor settings). That I agree with.

I love the way that you think things can be changed both with a click of the fingers and in order to suit the American market.

Well, if things are so wonderfully safe in Paris, French Open should be played before the U.S. Open.

Open up RG now. Let the players start practicing and playing warm up tournaments.

So you do agree that it is perfectly safe to play in Paris right now. Let players from around the world gather in Paris immediately and start practicing.

What else do these players have to do right now? They have had months to keep in physical shape.

Officials snapped their fingers and rescheduled without even consulting the U.S. Open.Reckless and inconsiderate!

Defending U.S. Open Rafa is not happy about playing back to back in September. Not happy about it at all. Threatening to skip.

How dare you ... You should consult US for everything ... including US Open ...

Right ...

Just a joke of course ... Everybody should consult US before they do, say or think anything ...

Yes I got your point. I was double-counting seats.
The post above yours, was another of my posts.
In that post I included more empty seats, those above and below each row of spectators, since those rows would be
less than six feet away from the seated people.

So when all was said and done, a stadium would need to be at <25% capacity to fulfill the six foot rule.
Not necessarily if you alternate the seats, depending on the distance between rows. It doesn't matter though, this is a mess. If somebody in the public needs to go to the can, will they evacuate half stadium to open a corridor?

That is not a trivial question!
They will obviously be controlling bowel/bladder movements along with many other things. :(

But yes, the entire entry/departure ritual will be incredibly complicated IF they want to keep to the 'safe distancing'
rationale.

Exactly how does someone in the middle of a row get up and go to the bathroom in an 'emergency' situation?

Exactly how do people take their seats? People don't arrive at the same time.
Please explain a logical procedure?
It's an absolute strategic nightmare!

For as you pass by someone you could be transmitting/infecting.

With hospitalizations sky rocketing, that death rate is going to balloon in 4 weeks.
50 000 tested positive yesterday. Pandemia is simply out of control in USA.
Sadly Trump won't be held responsible for it. Or will he with the election soon?
It seems like he will. Polls are forecasting a landslide for Democrats.

In fact, public restrooms are a disaster. Theoretically men can urinate without touch anything but their own clothes and bodies, so if you have doorways without doors and urinals without something to flush, you dodge that potential bullet. I would think it is an absolute nightmare for women. I can't imagine sitting down on a "throne". The unpleasant consequences just boggle my mind.

Have you seen what most people do with their masks? It's insane.

Yes, which is not a bad thing really.
Since most people who do get infected show mild symptoms, like the cold or flu.
The world will keep turning.
The sun will still shine.
People will still play tennis. :)
But poor Bill and Fauci won't be able to cash in and get even richer. :(

Strangely enough, despite Spain being quite afflicted by the virus they've found only 5% of the population carry antibodies.

Has France defeated Covid? Not necessarily a country i've been following but do they have next to no daily cases and no deaths anymore?
Appears they haven't. Looks like on the 30th of June they had 600 new cases in one day and 30 deaths....

But yeah, 60% capacity, hundreds of thousands of people in close proximity (they can say they'll obey social distancing but they aren't going to have 1.5m rulers built into their bodies, people will touch eachother and things others have touched.

Honestly, the irresponsibility of these federations is a joke.

When the situation globally is so changeable I wouldn't bank on start dates for events or target capacities not being subject to change. Infection spikes are being detected globally in places which had relaxed restrictions.

If you pa.s.s. ga.s.s., does the walrus get transmitted, or just annoyed?

The morale of the history is to not take an elevator with @sureshs basically.

You should never share an elevator with Suresh for two reasons actually. 1st one been said, second one is related to gravyti. IYKWIM

You overuse the word 'bloviating', which I note here is an Americanism.

We would more simply describe your writing as rodomontade upon rodomontade.

And your writing does indeed give "the impression of an army of pompous phrases moving over the landscape in search of an idea'.

. .That was self-centered bloviating from a toothless bag o' wind. Game on, puppet.

The notion of having any fans at the French open is stupid and irresponsible. Did we not learn this from the mess that Djoker created with his little failure in Serbia and Croatia. The balance of the 2020 season should be scrapped and not put the players and their teams at risk as well as the fans.

But the players won't be having a party or playing basketball, and they won't be signing autographs either I'd say.

What about the NBA? You think that will happen? Athletes mix with each other a hundred times more in the NBA....
Or are you only talking about the travel aspect?

Travel aspect. Moving from country to country i just cannot see it being done with the restrictions there will be. How will players train etc if quarantined. It will be farcical.
Nadal certainly would be wise to join Federer and wrap this season up now. He is bound to at least match Federer Slam wise as he is young enough to at worse win one more French. He probably has another Us Open in him as well so for him writing off this year would not be an issue. Djokovic has a bigger dilemna as he is still a fair way behind so he may be tempted to play but i think that would be a mistake.
Players lower down the rankings need the money. But if these events go ahead and then there is spikes in infections tennis could be set back 2 years. Just seems sensible to call the season off and lets hope by January things are better and there is a vaccine.

The question is, how good would you be at small talk with your face 2 inches away from Sureshs as the elevator cable snaps are you are plummeting down right after he has ripped a good one? Talk about aardvark.

I wish I could explain how good their dirty rice, fries and chicken tenders are to you :)
I grew up in the southern US so being very familiar with fried foods, I am sure these are very tasty.
But after a while one's arteries yell: "Enough! We're dying here."

(Maybe the rice is almost healthy.?)

That's impossible. Do the math.

Seats are two feet away from each other.
So with the universal six foot rule in place, that means that you wouldn't be able to
have someone to the left of you or to the right.

That means for every seat filled, there would be two not filled.

Translation: the most they could have in the stands is 33% capacity.

If they allow a greater capacity, it makes a total mockery of the social distancing rules that
have been in place for months.

Don't forget, it takes just one case in a stadium to spread like wildfire.
Europe has been back forth on one to two meters distancing.
You do realize Europe and elsewhere do need to follow CDC (an American agency) guidelines.
Why would France or the EU follow the US? The US has the most cases and by far the most deaths and was out of control according to news reports.
Although, France has more deaths per million than the U.S., so it's worth looking into.
The FO does need to ban the cheering of "ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, bahhhh, Ole !!!!!" this year.

Interesting stuff
Keep in mind no one goes alone its always in pairs or bigger groups so its every 2 seats, one empty seat to ensure distancing.

For a comparaison sake in Zadar, match featuring djokovic-coric had about 4-5000 fans at 50% capacity but no enforced spacing(so some areas completely packed, while others empty)
We are tomorrow 2 weeks since that match, no cases involving fans have tested positive(as far as fans from within croatia, unknown about visitors from other countries unless they stayed in the area for vacation, but i'm sure other countries would be quick to point out their new cases have source in Zadar?) and about 300 people are in isolation due to close contacts to players or someone from organization testing positive.
Outside of tennis players, known cases are a news anchor, driver for the event, 2 physio coaches, restaurant owner where players had a dinner and his kid.
Sitting in open air next to someone may not be so dangerous after all or people in the stands were healthy.
Thank you for all the details.:p

So how is the French being played with fans while
The U.S. Open will feature no fans?

And don't tell me the virus is far more under control in Europe. We just saw what happened at Djoker's
Tournament.

The U$TA will reconsider this.
USA has a fair amount of political correctness and the governor of New York is going to be conservative after making the mistake of not shutting down quickly enough in March.. Add in that you can be sued by someone for spreading covid in the USA and the $ say they will try to maximize TV money without many fans.

They probably have projections, but even I am a bit aghast at the selling of the seats months ahead of time. If things get worse they will really be up the creek trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

USA is much, much worse outlook because of its much more temperate climate and heavy use of air conditioning during the heat of the summer. Let's hope France doesn't have a mini-2nd wave of their own.

Yikes even worse than I thought. I mean we're worried that us here in Australia are entering a second wave as we're getting around 70 new cases a day but we've had just one death in a month. But yeah, lets have people flying from hardest hit countries like the US and Brazil go to France where there were 1,300 new cases and 35 deaths in one day and hold it in front of a crowd of 60%.....
Deaths per mil
2 Belgium 843
4 UK 656
5 Spain 617
6 Italy 577
7 Sweden 543
8 France 459
9 USA 407
10 Netherlands 358
11 Ireland 352

Brazil not far behind and far, far from done. Australia is smart to be on guard because its now winter and covid could get loose. Kudos to New Zealand. Look at South America and that is where you guys could be right now without some luck and proper policy.

Might as well take a look at France which I've ignored during this crisis because their data was so erratic (used Belgium/Netherlands as proxy). I've been watching the uptick very closely in the US and my own county today required masks at all businesses starting at 6 pm (we'd been the best metro area in the state until the last few weeks.) The 7 day average on deaths per day is 15 which is about like 75 deaths per day in USA. The new cases are staying flat which is really good news. I'd say they were rising slightly in June, but heading downwards so far in July. Sadly they're testing data is too erratic (updated perhaps weekly now) for me to easily see their positive test rate. Well at least they're not completely out of their mind. :sneaky:

Paris protocols are very lax.

Do you believe Paris is that much safer than NYC?

NY State is reporting only 20 daily deaths amongst a population of 20 million. Can hardly get much lower. NY is very generous with counting deaths while France is conservative. I trust the official NY numbers more than the official French numbers.
Actually New York doesn't count all the numbers (which is why their data looks more consistent which is good) and I'm pretty sure they only count covid deaths with more absolute confirmation. Daily cases now on a slight rise, but not spiking upwards though its probably just a matter of time. France is worse and I can't comment because I've completely ignored their data because its so erratic.
