I Stand By Bouchard: Leader of the Genie Army, Ready to Rise and Conquer the World!

This thread at 134 pages, has a long way to go to catch up to her ranking. As of the middle of March she had fallen to something like #780 and with no play in the last three months, I presume Genie's ranking is still around that level. There was a time when her ranking was within the number of pages in this thread....we will never see that again!
Ya well with so many wins under his belt, Federer can easily take off a few months and still remain near the top!!

In case people missed it, she's got Rennae Stubbs as a coach now. Stubbs is of course a very accomplished doubles player in her own right with 4 slams and a #1 ranking. She's also done some previous coaching with Pliskova and Stosur. Seems to be working wonders thus far for Genie, early days but.

I think Andreescu doing well has been good for her. Spurred her to shake off her complacency and start loving tennis again. Also made her reset her expectations. Now that she won't be making Canadian history anyway, she can play to the level where she really belongs, a top 20-30 player at best but one who is or ought to be solid enough to hang in there frequently instead of languishing below 200 ranks or whatever. She played well at WTT to dispatch the petulant Danielle Collins after Stephens left mid-set with a huge deficit. Remains to be seen if she has worked hard enough on her fitness during this break because she has lost a bunch of matches over the last couple of years where she played well but got gassed in the third set.

Genie Bouchard #330 plays on Thursday against Tamara Zidansek #72! 5 AM. ET.
If she wins, she will be able to do/enter qualifying rounds at 125K WTA tournaments!

Bouchard is on the quarterfinals in Prague in a very long match 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 win!

Now if Bouchard can win in Qtrs., she can get direct entry into some 125K events and do qualifying in some International events. Plus, Bouchard may get a chance to get into a Premier event as a WC entry!

Zidansek looks promising, by the way. Great forehand. Look at the spin she put on the forehand @ 4:24. I am seeing a kinda WTA/ATP hybrid forehand from some of the young women coming through. It's exciting, they are going to take women's tennis to new heights. Will also put paid to the myth that they are biologically incapable of hitting the ATP forehands which is why coaches have to teach them to hit with very limited racquet drop and a huge takeback.

Graf, Sebaneka, Capriati, Venus, Cluster and Serena, Henin all have great powerful forehands that can win points easily. Davenport too! Keys is powerful but can easily go haywire.

Those are not more powerful than male forehands. Anyway when I said ATP forehand, I was comparing the technique used and not the power level. ATP forehand is more compact but also uses more wrist (which creates the spin).

Taking Mertens to 3 sets is a very good outcome for her. Her ranking is so bad now it looks like she let herself down by not advancing, but actually she is playing well now. She just let herself drop so far that she has to more than climb a mountain to find her way back.

Found out the ITF Transition Circuit is suspended for now and WTA 125 maybe too! So Bouchard, her agent better start the calling the tournament directors worldwide begging for a WC entry now!

Bouchard after her QF Prague lost has moved from 330 to 214 in the WTA rankings. She needs only 20 more points to be under the 200 rankings and to qualify for the WTA 125K qualifying rounds. I think a tournament director or two will give her a chance to be in the main draw as a WC entry just because she is a tennis celebrity now, and she did well in Prague tournament. At least that is what I hope! :) Prague Tennis Open really helped out Bouchard, “big” time!

i'm impressed with her lately. She is playing wherever she needs to play. She's becoming a grinder.

well, she’s playing wherever she’s gifted a wildcard for the most part

she has done an amazing job of leveraging her popularity to avoid playing the tournaments that someone at her ranking would typically have to play over the past 1-2 years, which is certainly her right and the smart thing to do, but let’s not pretend she’s grinding at events for those ranked 300+

she won two rounds for a wild card which would indicate it was justified. The only other tournament was Lexington. I guess she should have stayed home. look at her matches, she been playing challengers. she's played a couple of Oracle Challengers. I'll be first to admit that she is popular because of her looks. which is another topic I won't discuss. she won two rounds in Auckland. according to UTR she is ranked 117th. Yes, she is grinding.

auckland was another WC, you’re just making my point

if she has the choice of playing a tourney that she can get in to based on her ranking vs having her people campaign for a WC, she does the latter every time, which again is fine

but it’s not willingly going down to the minor leagues and grinding

I think the other poster meant style of play and grit, not grinding in terms of going down to really small tournaments which would be the only ones she would qualify for. She's not throwing in the towel anymore. I think there's been a change, mentally. Even what she said after she won the first round at Prague was very un Bouchard, very mature and not looking too far ahead at all.

I know Auckland was a wild card. She played WTT, obviously she didn't need the money. I believe you are wrong about her, I think she would have done that in the past. I think she is committed to the game now.

lol, just another example of how her tennis career would've been over 18-24 months ago if not constantly propped up by WCs - can we get another quote from her about how she enjoys grinding at these low level tournaments, while she instructs her agents to work overtime to beg everyone in the world for WCs so she doesn't have to play these tournaments anymore

Bouchard still got 2 WTA points out of it! At her rank, 2 ranking is still nothing to be ashamed of!
