Pure Aero 2019 not for me?

Hi guys, will try to cut short my dilemma. I returned to tennis a year ago and ever since I have struggled with my forehands. I cant recall my muscle memory from the past( was my best shot, weapon). So I went from my Wilson Ultra 100 V2 to pure aero 300g in search for my lost forehand. I strung it with rpm blast 16 at 23.5kg. I found the racket to be really hard to control, harder then my ultra V2. I feel disconnected from the racket, I do get a very very light elbow now and I blame the stiff stringing. I probably should have never strung it with a poly.
Now my question is, shall I try restring it with a multi or gut and regain some control? I have played with it for weeks now and maybe it need more time? Or shall I sell it?
I would love to try the Wilson Clash with multifilament or gut.
Please advise guys. Thank You

My .02 restring your Pure Aero with a soft multi like 1.30mm Head Velocity Mains / and either 1.28mm Isospeed Cream or 1.25mm Yonex Poly Tour Air (YPTA) crosses.

Cream and YPTA are both elastomers (Rubber) infused smooth polys and feel nothing like traditional polys. Tecnifibre HDMX, X1-Biphase, NRG2, and even Multifeel would also work as a main with Cream and YPTA crosses. These are very soft setups. And they will make the PA feel completely different as you get rid of the RPM Blast.

Thanks for the advice. What tension shall I go for with that setup?

Even a rec-level player will break multi in a Pure Aero pretty quickly. RPM Blast has a stiff feel even for a poly; I would try a softer poly and drop the tension. The Pure Aero gets its “control” by aiding in topspin production to pull the shots down. If you aren’t generating a healthy amount of topspin with your strokes then it will definitely feel hard to control and there will be better racquet choices out there. I would also switch if the arm problems continue.

Like many players I came back to tennis in my late 30s after not playing significantly since my first year of college. I had to rebuild my forehand because I had totally forgotten how to hit it. FWIW in my case, the biggest flaw that caused everything else to get out of whack was that I had forgotten about laying my wrist back and was trying to hit with a relatively straight wrist. That’s a subtle detail that will completely ruin your strokes.

I think my techinque is not quite there yet to benefit from the current ( commonly used) setup. It is a hit and a miss currently. If I hit it correctly it is a rocket to return but there is no confidence in me to use it all the time as a weapon of choice like before. It just feels so stiff and heavy to manouvre.
I will be restringing it by the end of this week with tension around 48-50 and see if it changes before I sell it.

I string plenty of Pure Aeros for 3.0 and 3.5 players who take months (yep months) to break 1.30mm multi mains like 1.30mm Velocity/X1/NXT even with a Pure Aero. When players are breaking a multi every 15-16 hours or if you can't swing out and keep the balls in the court, I would then consider a hybrid.

If you came to me I would ask these questions:
1) Level of play. The rated level not what you think you are in your mind. 2) How quickly you break strings or restring them 3) gauge and string you are referencing from question #2 4) History of elbow or shoulder pain

If you have "very very light elbow now", did you mean your elbow is hurting after hitting with your frame and RPM Blast? If so ditching any traditional poly would be the first step I would take. Been stringing 10+ years and stringing 60+ frames a month from home even during Covid-19. I have plenty of 4.5C and 5.0C men who play VCT 1.30mm until breakage in various frames, and that is the string I have used for 8 years. It's a soft poly, but I wouldn't even start you on that if you have any elbow pain. With Technibfre HDMX 1.35mm/YPTA 1.25mm in my PA+ frames, I get about 18-20 hours out of it. HDMX is a mulit/poly fusion and yep, I use it in thick 1.35mm gauge so it doesn't break as quickly. Just remember spin is enhanced by a string, not produced by the string. The PA is a uber spin-friendly frame.

@pinco000 I suggested a unique hybrid right off the bat for you for three reasons: 1) you are using a PA with a very open pattern 2) you already have some elbow pain 3) Cream and YTPA aren't traditional polys.

Triax 1.33mm or Tecnfibre HDMX 1.35mm / YPTA works for this 4.5A player. Read the thread below. I doubt you would break that setup faster than the player I write about in the thread below. Before you sell the frame, consider the setups I suggested but up the tension to 55M/53X. These are very soft strings I am suggesting to you and just don't work at low tensions like 48-50 lbs.

g4driver,
I've read many of your string suggestions for the Wilson Steam 99S. It seems your favorite gut/poly hybrid is Wilson Natural Gut 16g and Head Hawk (White Color) 17g. When you string it at 50lbs Mains and 47lbs Crosses, do you constantly have to straighten the gut or does it snap back into place until it breaks?

The Steam 99S has such an Open 16X15 pattern gut / poly in that frame tends do better at a much higher tension. I was stringing it at 60lbs Mains/57 lbs Crosses.

If I typed 50/47 lbs that was a typo. I always strung my steam 99S frames at 57/55 with Cyclone Tour and even higher with gut/poly.

The original Wilson "made in France " Natural Gut at $55 a pack in the white packaging is no longer made. The current Wilson gut in the red packaging is made my Luxilion.

I know you used to prefer Pacific Tough Gut, which I can’t find anymore. What natural gut do you currently recommend?
