No, I think it was the right decision unfortunately. Intent does not factor into it, it all boils down to bad luck. Happened before with Shapovalov, Nalbandian and also Tim Henman in 1995. No one intentionally directs the ball at line judge or ball boy / ball girl, it’s simply bad luck but rule is clear in this regard.
What this should do is serve as a lesson to all the players. Best to steer clear of any such trouble.

You absolutely cannot hit anybody with a ball and get to continue playing. Any tennis player from the juniors on up should know this. I'm glad the officials had the integrity to adhere to the rules and apply them appropriately to the best player in the world.

If they let this slide then either:
Players know that in some cases they can get away with dangerous and technically "illegal" behavior.
Or - you have a clear-cut example of a top player getting away with murder just because he's a top player.
Either outcome is unacceptable.

Agreed. It is a joke. He clearly had no intention of hitting anyone. This is a black eye for tennis but not because of what Nole did. We lose the world #1 for a grand slam because some lady had a meltdown after a ball was lobbed at her neck.

It's a dumb rule. The integrity of the sport is ruined when the top contender is eliminated for something so silly and minor - not when a ball accidentally strikes a lines person.

It's not a joke. It's a very legit rule. You cannot injure linespeople and referees because of your inability to control your temper. Shapo almost knocked out an Umpire's eye, Nalbandian left a linesperson bleeding and Novak knocked this lady breathless. This rule is there for a reason and it must be enforced no matter what or who.

I don't like it either, but the rules are rules. You can't just knock it down to a point or game penalty because it wasn't intentional. Which based on how lightly he hit it, is probably more what he deserved.
Just absolutely terrible luck. But he needs to take responsibility too, the rules are in place because something like this could happen if you're not watching what you're doing. And they need to set a precedent that this won't be tolerated instead of letting a big name get away with it.

Shapovalov hit the ball with maximum power. Henman also, point blank. Nalbandian kicked the ad that was just in front of foot fault judge that gave him several FF.
Novak was careless but it's not comparable to any of those cases.
Federer once hit the ball kid who wasn't paying attention right in the head (outside of play) and he was AIMING for the ball kid, trying to get him to catch his trick shot. It all ended with everyone laughing, including the ball kid. Unfortunately, video seems to be scrubbed off yt...

Of course it was not intentional. Neither was Shapo tagging the umpire in the eye. Or Tim Henman tagging a ballgirl at Wimbledon. You hit an official, you're out, it's that simple. If they were to keep him on, just because he's the nr1, that would have tarnished the open even more. If you feel anger about Novak's DQ, aim it at him, not at the US open officials who followed the rules. It's Novak who takes the risk by doing something stupid. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
