He hit a ball in anger born of frustration and caused a lines woman to what sounded like choking. Not intentional and hope he does the right thing and admit he made a mistake. Feel for him as this will be a tough time with the press.

Lol seriously? Of all the posters on this forum to come out with this reaction you were the last person I was expecting to see. Quite simply the correct decision was made. Can't understand why you have such a problem with it.
Ruins the tourney. He barely hit it on accident. Ruins the whole slam.

No, I think it was the right decision unfortunately. Intent does not factor into it, it all boils down to bad luck. Happened before with Shapovalov, Nalbandian and also Tim Henman in 1995. No one intentionally directs the ball at line judge or ball boy / ball girl, it’s simply bad luck but rule is clear in this regard.

What this should do is serve as a lesson to all the players. Best to steer clear of any such trouble.

It's happened before to other players, so it's well within the rules.

No sympathy for Djokovic. He's been acting like he's above the rules and bigger than the sport all year long. This is maybe the wake-up call he needed.

You absolutely cannot hit anybody with a ball and get to continue playing. Any tennis player from the juniors on up should know this. I'm glad the officials had the integrity to adhere to the rules and apply them appropriately to the best player in the world.

Only thing for Novak to do now is regroup for the clay season.

If they let this slide then either:
Players know that in some cases they can get away with dangerous and technically "illegal" behavior.
Or - you have a clear-cut example of a top player getting away with murder just because he's a top player.
Either outcome is unacceptable.

Agreed. It is a joke. He clearly had no intention of hitting anyone. This is a black eye for tennis but not because of what Nole did. We lose the world #1 for a grand slam because some lady had a meltdown after a ball was lobbed at her neck.

Huge mistake on Novak's part - he needed to know better - but the rule is a JOKE.

is that the argument?

it ruins the "good tennis"?

Nole ruined it himself, he made his bed now he's gotta pay his dues

It's a dumb rule. The integrity of the sport is ruined when the top contender is eliminated for something so silly and minor - not when a ball accidentally strikes a lines person.

The rule is idiotic if discretion cannot be used to apply it.

Don't care what the rule is. Djoker should have stayed in. Sure his opponent feels the same way.

It's not a joke. It's a very legit rule. You cannot injure linespeople and referees because of your inability to control your temper. Shapo almost knocked out an Umpire's eye, Nalbandian left a linesperson bleeding and Novak knocked this lady breathless. This rule is there for a reason and it must be enforced no matter what or who.

I don't like it either, but the rules are rules. You can't just knock it down to a point or game penalty because it wasn't intentional. Which based on how lightly he hit it, is probably more what he deserved.

Just absolutely terrible luck. But he needs to take responsibility too, the rules are in place because something like this could happen if you're not watching what you're doing. And they need to set a precedent that this won't be tolerated instead of letting a big name get away with it.

The context was a change service, returning the ball to the lines people on the break. This is within the context of the game. I think this is a terrible penalty. The rule implies hitting a linesperson with the ball out of the normal gameplay, a la Shapovalov.

Shapovalov hit the ball with maximum power. Henman also, point blank. Nalbandian kicked the ad that was just in front of foot fault judge that gave him several FF.

Novak was careless but it's not comparable to any of those cases.
The thing is, Federer would never do such a careless thing in the first place.
Federer once hit the ball kid who wasn't paying attention right in the head (outside of play) and he was AIMING for the ball kid, trying to get him to catch his trick shot. It all ended with everyone laughing, including the ball kid. Unfortunately, video seems to be scrubbed off yt...

Of course it was not intentional. Neither was Shapo tagging the umpire in the eye. Or Tim Henman tagging a ballgirl at Wimbledon. You hit an official, you're out, it's that simple. If they were to keep him on, just because he's the nr1, that would have tarnished the open even more. If you feel anger about Novak's DQ, aim it at him, not at the US open officials who followed the rules. It's Novak who takes the risk by doing something stupid. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
