The officials followed the rules. But yeah, it’s not like Djokovic blasted a ball in anger. A bitter pill to swallow for Novak and his fans. But rules are rules and players should at least exercise a bit of care when getting the balls to the ball kids.

I was more bothered by the fact that Djokovic was talking with the officials in close proximity without a mask on. The officials all had masks. The man had COVID! Then he goes to give Busta a HAND SHAKE?? Has this man learned nothing from the Adria tour?

According to the rules, they could have given him a point penalty or a game penalty -- Novak himself was arguing for that. They also could have defaulted him like they did. But they didn't have to.

In this particular case, even as a Novak fan, it's hard to argue against the default. But like you said, it's a bitter pill to swallow.

Politically, DQ Novak. Yield best results. fan may cry for the punishment would be too heavy but no one will say it’s unfair.
personally, Novak didn’t hit the ball out of anger. He might be distracted or simply failed when he was trying to hit the ball to ball kid.
why tHe lines,an didn’t dodge or do any reaction at all? Was she asleep? If she can’t react on a ball coming to her, how can we trust she can make good call at right time?
she looked like a dummy.

however, Novak shouldn’t
be fined. DQ is more than enough.

This call is just ludicrous. I bet Rafi Nadal or even Roger would have not been disqualified for this little unoffensive 'naiserie'.

Novak should skip from now onwards this ridiculous US Open, this poor joke of a tournament.

Can't wait too see all the conspiracy theorists come out now and say that lines woman is really a Nadal fan and knew that if she over reacted Novak would get disqualified.

Lol seriously? Of all the posters on this forum to come out with this reaction you were the last person I was expecting to see. Quite simply the correct decision was made. Can't understand why you have such a problem with it.

Not sure if his post is out of sarcasm/trollery, or if he's actually being serious. If it's the latter then I'm definitely with you. Seems like a whiny post from someone expecting Novak to have received special treatment for doing what he did. Now that would be utter trash as the OP so eloquently put it.

A well deserved disqualification. The only issue is whether one thinks Mr. Djokovic should have been allowed to plead his case for as long as he did.

As for those of you who just discovered a rule book and think Mr Friemel was not qualified to make the rather simple assessment, here is his bio and qualifications:

"Friemel [is] Head of Officiating for the ITF, a position he has held since 2014. Throughout his career, he has worked at the highest levels of tennis officiating. A Gold Badge certified umpire and referee, Friemel has been a Grand Slam supervisor since 2001. In addition, he has served as referee at numerous ATP and WTA tournaments, has been the referee at a Fed Cup Final and three Davis Cup Finals—including the 2018 Finals—and was a member of the Referees’ Team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Friemel served as the Chief Umpire at the US Open from 2016-18."

Maybe, but don't tell me it does not ruin the legimaticy of the uSO. Cause it does.
I have a feeling this wouldn’t happen in any other slam, a line judge acting this way.
I see that @TheGhostOfAgassi agrees. I wonder what she would say if it were Federer instead?

The DQ was deserved.
Question is rather, would you think one dq was deserved if it was Federer doing what Novak did?

I’m not a Novak fan, and now Novak will probably never get the USO record, Rafa a clay god having more slams than Novak in a HC slam is incredible.
But this dq was too much.

For a new grand slam men’s champion all you need is an injury, virus and a player hitting a lineswoman with a ball.:unsure::-D

Bit of a troll thread IMO to gain reaction for an incident that has little to be argued over apart from Novak fans stamping their feet in indignation that Novak isn’t going to win 18 at this slam, which he was favourite. Minute he hit the ball he was responsible of where it was going and he was going to get defaulted under the rules. The only controversy at the time was why it took so long to reach the decision. Only because he is number 1 did it take 10 mins To allow the situation to cool down and make sure lines woman was seen to and got any treatment she needed.

Novak apologises, no intent clearly. Most sane people won’t hold it against him. He’ll move on from this and win more titles and slams.

You still don't seem to get it. No one is arguing that he wasn't in position to do so, just that the rule doesn't mean one has to get a DQ'd. The fact that they left Bedene with a warning AND DQ'd Djokovic is the problem here, as it now looks very improfessional and in the light of PTPA rather shady.

Novak deserved disqualification because he wasn't looking where he was hitting the ball. He was expecting to hit a wall like thousand times before. We can only debate that the rules that are applied are discriminatory. Roddick didn't get any sanctions at US Open when he physically attacked Novak in the locker room after he lost the match. All tennis players are equal, but some players are "more equal" than others.

Not all sports are like this though. Tennis is a primadonna sport!! In football you don’t get a MTO for just falling like Novak did. You just get up and play again.
Tennis isnt considered masculine sport. Not many years ago tennis was a gentle man lawn sport.

Athletes from other sports laughs at tennis rn.

Ahhh, the masculine athletes in the cross country skiing that laugh at the tennis "prima donnas".

What would be 'unprofessional' would be for an umpire and tournament referee to ignore a player striking a ball at 30-40 mph on the fly after play stoppage which hit and injured an official in the throat. The facts matter.

If Bedene had hit the cameraman in the eye or throat and he subsequently fell over and needed help getting up and had trouble breathing, we'd be discussing a very different fact pattern and situation.

Intimating that this is some sort of conspiracy is simply laughable.

WHAT IT MEANS: "In accordance with the Grand Slam rulebook, following his actions of intentionally hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court or hitting a ball with negligent disregard of the consequences, the US Open tournament referee defaulted Novak Djokovic from the 2020 US Open," the USTA said in an official statement. "Because he was defaulted, Djokovic will lose all ranking points earned at the US Open and will be fined the prize money won at the tournament in addition to any or all fines levied with respect to the offending incident."

Going with this reasoning means that the judge's reaction defines the punishment, yet the official statement USO didn't mention that and they're argumentation for DQ is perfectly applicable in Bedene's case which ended in a warning. They even wrote "or" like they couldn't decide what the exact reason was. You either have rules or you don't.

The judge's reaction along with an implicit 'reasonable person's standard' which is implicit in all this, matters. If Mr. Djokovic had missed the line judge by a foot and she felt emotionally wounded yet was entirely physically unscathed, one can easily imagine, Mr. Djokovic would not have been defaulted.

Similarly, had Mr Djokovic fired a ball as hard as he can into her eye, one can easily imagine the disqualification would not have taken more than a very brief interval.

All of this is extremely clear from even a cursory understanding of tort law which is the template for all of these sport rule books. Nothing to see here.

Shapovalov hit the ball with maximum power. Henman also, point blank. Nalbandian kicked the ad that was just in front of foot fault judge that gave him several FF.

Novak was careless but it's not comparable to any of those cases.

Federer once hit the ball kid who wasn't paying attention right in the head (outside of play) and he was AIMING for the ball kid, trying to get him to catch his trick shot. It all ended with everyone laughing, including the ball kid. Unfortunately, video seems to be scrubbed off yt...

the video is not scrubbed, just hit on "watch on YT".
common practice.

a ball boy is supposed to rest during points and work between them, like catch the ball and pass it further.
a linesman is supposed to work during the points and rest between them.
surely you don't see the difference?

I feel like this year “vic

I feel like this year is all about “Victim Blaming.”
It’s so crazy. What happened to decency and logical thought process? It’s truly a shift in social consciousness and I think we all know the source of it. Year after year of victims being doubly victimized. But that is just life.

I do feel sorry for Novak. He was probably going to have 19 slams by years end. We’ll never really know

But they had to default him. You can’t just pick and choose. Not on the biggest arena of the sport.
Yea, Bedene should have been defaulted, too. But no one cared then.

When I see the reactions of diehard Novak fans (or even the Serena fans from 2018 who wanted poor Carlos Ramos' blood and threw a good umpire under the bus), I ask why should it surprise anyone that there are Trump supporters (or Modi supporters back home) who won't see the light. How is any of this behaviour different? It's just doubling down and trying to justify any deed of your idols even if it means being inconsiderate or even cruel to ordinary people who are probably more like you than those idols.

Another thing, Safin and that other ****-head Baghdatis glamorized smashing racquets so much people think that kind of behaviour is ok. Um, no, it's not. It's only tolerated in so far as it doesn't hurt anyone. But the moment it does, you're out, it's a straight DQ. Forget about whether the linesperson was seriously injured or not (which is a ridiculous baseline to draw), why was Novak tossing the ball to her and not the ballboys? You return the ball to the ballboys, you don't throw them AT the linespersons. You can't tell me a top player who is used to concentrating for hours on the court finds it so difficult to be mindful when he is disposing off the ball. No, it is that behind all the PR plastered 'niceness' (same sort as Ellen or Hasan Minhaj, perhaps?), there is an incredible level of entitlement among the players. Hopefully, the change we get is players pausing over this incident and changing their behaviour. A lot of ballboys may also be rec players. So if you hate your racquet and feel like destroying it, maybe donate it to them instead. Or auction it, whatever. I fear, instead, the change we will get is eliminating linespersons altogether with Hawkeye officiating all matches. If tomorrow a spectator gets injured by a racquet being thrown, they will automate spectators too perhaps? We already have fake crowd noise filling in for the spectators this tournament.

this is all without saying that:
1. Novak has a history of walking on the edge
2. just seconds before this, he hit a ball, out of frustration into the stands. Luckily it didn't hit anyone

if you don't know then don't make statements a-la "it was scrubbed"
better document yourself.
It happened. It was a carbon copy of this video. Only ball kid was standing still, not paying attention and was hit in the head.

I don't know if video was scrubbed, channel it was on terminated/closed or youtube algorithms don't show it now, whereas it was among first 10 results a year ago.

If anything, Federer's ball was hit harder and with intent at ball boy. Not intent of hurting him though. But if he hit him in the Adam's apple, who knows what could've happened.

Djokovic didn't hit his ball with intent at judge or even in anger. Both are accidents, but difference is where the person was hit, their reaction and who was doing the hitting.

Also, I was talking about another video, where Fed hit the kid right in the head, not this one, but it was the same type of trick shot.

It was the right decision.

I think the majority of Novak fans agree the right decision was made. It is just a shame it ended this way for him, and the impact to the tournament as a whole.
You're such a kewl guy. Why do you have to be a Djokovic fan?

Most of the reactions have been biased. It looked so certain that Djokovic would get #18 here, that this event has been a catalyst for a lot of emotional responses both from Djokovic fans and foes. This is a strange exception to that pattern.
