When I see the reactions of diehard Novak fans (or even the Serena fans from 2018 who wanted poor Carlos Ramos' blood and threw a good umpire under the bus), I ask why should it surprise anyone that there are Trump supporters (or Modi supporters back home) who won't see the light. How is any of this behaviour different? It's just doubling down and trying to justify any deed of your idols even if it means being inconsiderate or even cruel to ordinary people who are probably more like you than those idols.
Another thing, Safin and that other ****-head Baghdatis glamorized smashing racquets so much people think that kind of behaviour is ok. Um, no, it's not. It's only tolerated in so far as it doesn't hurt anyone. But the moment it does, you're out, it's a straight DQ. Forget about whether the linesperson was seriously injured or not (which is a ridiculous baseline to draw), why was Novak tossing the ball to her and not the ballboys? You return the ball to the ballboys, you don't throw them AT the linespersons. You can't tell me a top player who is used to concentrating for hours on the court finds it so difficult to be mindful when he is disposing off the ball. No, it is that behind all the PR plastered 'niceness' (same sort as Ellen or Hasan Minhaj, perhaps?), there is an incredible level of entitlement among the players. Hopefully, the change we get is players pausing over this incident and changing their behaviour. A lot of ballboys may also be rec players. So if you hate your racquet and feel like destroying it, maybe donate it to them instead. Or auction it, whatever. I fear, instead, the change we will get is eliminating linespersons altogether with Hawkeye officiating all matches. If tomorrow a spectator gets injured by a racquet being thrown, they will automate spectators too perhaps? We already have fake crowd noise filling in for the spectators this tournament.
