Mum's the word at this years US Open! 3 mothers on the WTA tour into the 3R - Azarenka, Pironkova and Williams

Truly incredible.

Going into the tournament there were 9 WTA players who were mothers. These were:
Victoria Azarenka, Tsvetana Pironkova, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Vera Zvonareva, Tatjana Maria, Kateryna Bondarenko, Patricia Maria Tig and Olga Govortsova.

The first 3 are into the 3R while the other 6 have been eliminated.

Just a truly amazing feat, absolute kudos to these ladies.

All three mums have made it into the 4R!

Pironkova beat Vekic 6-4 6-1
Serena defeated Sloane 2-6 6-2 6-2
Azarenka knocked out Swiatek 6-4 6-2

Modern medicine is a wonder. The mothers nowadays deliver their babies and get up the same day. They have to deal with other problems, but they are not much different than going through an injury, except, their organisms get stronger (instead of weaker in the case of an injury) as per the natural requirement to actually support their babies.

It's not only about medicine, but about different approach to motherhood(and fatherhood). Women today fell like they can do both more than they used to. Men are talking care of the children more than in the past.

Fair enough, but I think that to most anyone who had advanced to that level of understanding it is not particularly surprising or even a point of discussion.

There were some in the 3rd round though, very responsible people, you can see that they are parents right away.

Jokes aside, that is very impressive. Three years is quite a long absence for giving a birth and coming back to the game. She took her time apparently. Wise move.

To me it's just saying tennis is getting weaker. Same like the mens tour. The young folk not coming through as they should. Tennis was just stronger when Federer and Serena came through (and before that). It has just sloped downwards after they peaked. All the great old players are proving this.

Men’s tour for sure is getting weaker with the youngsters not coming through but not at all the case for the women’s tour. This is the first time 3 mums made it this far and it likely happened because the majority of the top players who withdrew prior to the tournament were younger women in their early 20s or late teens. #1 Barty, #6 Andreescu, #10 Bencic, #2 Halep etc.

As for “the young folk not coming through and Serena showing this” I’d like to point out that Serena hasn’t won a slam in over 3.5 years and has lost the last 2 USO finals to much younger females Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu.

Fun reminder that the WTA had a slam champion born in the 2000s before the men had one from the 1990’s (and is still the case until this slam is complete).

I agree with you. I think the slope has been greater in mens tennis than women's. But there is also some disappointing aspects such as Coco falling out whereas in the past someone like Capriati or Hingis as teens would not have done so imo. But yes the WTA is harder to criticise in more recent years with some of the problems.

I have no delusions about the male participant's 'contribution' to the process of child birth.
