In theory he may have represented the biggest threat for Nadal. But he must be physically and mentally exhausted and will have nearly zero preparation on clay. What do you think?

Nadal got the jump on clay court preparations but I can't image that winning the USO doesn't help Thiem's confidence on a surface that he is pretty good at.

I don't see him outlasting or beating Nadal at the end of it.

Dominic Thiem's level of play is enough to grant him a win over Nadal at the FO.

The problem has always been mental and physical.

Now, we can assume that after beating Nadal at the AO and winning his first major, he's closer than ever.

But, he needs to reach the final in a good shape.

It very much depends on the draw just as this US open did Where Tim had a great early draw to find form.

I have ruled out Tim taking a wildcard in to Hamburg, but as I realize that the cramping and physical stress in the final was more the pressure of the moment and not the strain from the tournament I think it possible he might play.

Without some play at Hamburg, Tim will need a safe draw in the first couple rounds at RG To play into form. Physically he should be fine as his U.S. Open run was a romp in the park with only one set Lost to Cilic before the final And he cruise the first two sets of that match so I don't think it was very taxing.

Weather is just a huge factor and I'm quite confident the Tim would not have won this US open if the weather had been maybe even it's average typical temperature. this will be a huge factor at Roland Garros; With a little October heat wave it'll be Nadal's typical conditions and an uphill battle for the field, but if it's unseasonably cool in October then it will be open season on the Dull especially for Tim.

He should feel more confident now for sure, but don't know if that actually increases his chances given the competition that he'll face in Paris.
Physically and mentally though he should be fine for the start of the FO...

Unless he doesn't recover from whatever injuries he sustained during the tournament, I agree that the USO win carries only positives for Thiem, confidence and experience-wise. I hope he doesn't need too much time to play himself into clay-court form; it's a natural surface for him.

Plus, he'll be wearing clay-court shoes; different from the ones he had in the USO. That should be worth at least a point a game, no?

You raised a good point about temperature. It may also rain, and conditions be more humid than in June.

I think Thiem will be tired, especially from playing as long as he did in the condition he was in. I’m not expecting him to make the final, let alone win.

I just couldn't agree more.

I think Thiem could roll out of bed and be fine on clay. He grew up on the surface. He has plenty of time to be ready. He also has a match every other day. This is a guy that zooms all over the place to play his next match. I do think that his US Open success will be much more important than any warmup on clay could ever be. The players that did not play the US Open will have a tough time adapting to best of 5 all of a sudden. You can't practice the pressure of a Grand Slam match.

Thiem said in the US open winner interview that he now has all the confidence in the world and fully expect to play even better than ever there........ and also he expects to destroy Nadal if they meet there.

How much time does he have to get ready? Skipping Rome was very smart. He's still a top 3 favorite.
Let's remember that Nadal is one year older and just the weirdness of the new regulations may challenge his OCD personality and throw him off mentally.
Novak will be strong too, as will Tsitsipas and even Zverev.

I'd love to see Zverev make a deep run at the FO.

Thiem will be a big threat at RG. Although I do feel that he well be physically and mentally exhausted after achieving his 1st slam. There is not much time to recover and he won’t have Rome to prepare on clay. I’m feeling that we may get a nadal v Djokovic RG final this time. With Nadal likely to win again but Novak putting up a fight.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had a let down after winning the USO. It's only normal. He hasn't yet learnt how to keep his focus up after a big win yet.

Plus, he is not chasing any slam records so the motivation for RG might not be there.
That honestly may help him out a bit. He knows that the biggest thing will talk about in terms of his legacy was whether or not he had a slam. He was never going to win enough for the amount to be staggering. With his status as a HOF player and slam champion secure he should be able to play more freely.

There's still Hamburg ATP500, its one week before Roland Garros. I have a feeling that Zverev and Thiem might try to play it.

And if Djokovic and/or Nadal goes deep in Rome this week then Djokovic and Nadal might skip Hamburg to rest before RG. Might be a similar situation to the US Open.

No chance. Will not make the 2nd week. Achilles problem, was totally spent, mentally will be exhausted, Thiem is not a threat this year at RG. It will be a Nadal v Djokovic final. Only intersting thing will be if wawrinka lands in Djokovic half

I think he does. We don't know yet how Nadal will return from hibernation. For all we know the Spaniard's form might be very underwhelming. He's usually a guy who needs tons of practice and matches to get going.

I have the feeling that this year Nadal is not a lock for RG. It is an enigma his current form, and he needs time to build momentum. About Thiem, difficult to say: I think he will take a few days to rest and he will be fresh as a daisy. And in clay he is the best player after Nadal, I think he will have a good run, no less than QF or even SF

Thiem should have fair chance at winning RG, but he will need a lot of luck, especially with the draw. He really needs some easy early rounds, and it would be better for him to get Nadal first then Djokovic than the other way around, then hope Zverev and Medvedev are on Djok's half.

I can imagine Zverev, Wawrinka, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Monfils and Schwartzman defeating Djokovic at RG.

I think at the moment he feels like he needs two months rest or something.

Not sure he'll be in contender shape, mentally and physically for the FO and even if he was, there's the issue of the Nadal.

Monfils is never going to beat Djokovic anywhere. For sure not in BO5.

Thiem is always exhausted at the end of slams, and Zverev looked in better shape in this US Open Final, but Thiem won because Zverev served 15 doubles including 2 in the tiebreaker.
Thiem will be even more exhausted in the French Open Final, and he also lacks the skills to beat Nadal there anyway.
They met 4 times at Roland Garros, and Nadal has won 3 of them in straight sets, and last year's Final was 63 57 61 61.
And Thiem needed to win 3 tiebreakers to beat an out-of-form Nadal at the AO this year 76 46 76 76.

He'll have all the practice in the world in the early rounds. He'll be fine.
