Meme'ing a little but 2017 was an absolute joke...

I personally would give Nadal the nod if he wins 6, because to me, you cannot control who you play. Rafa played only those that could make it to him. At 5 all though I am still leaning towards Federer.

legends like butterdatis, gonzo, boderling, *******, mugit made it very difficult for fraud in slams during the strong era.......

Salty Sampras fan alert.

You don't want to get into an argument about competition. Especially not when it comes to a Nadal at the USO.

Fair enough. I make exceptions for the Career Inflation Era though.

I rate Sampras ahead too but not because of his competition. It should be assumed that anyone reasonable gives the nod to Federer over Nadal, should go without saying.

What are arguments for rating Sampras higher?

Federer clearly at the moment. Despite not winning it in a while he has the upper hand statistically - more titles (including 5 in a row), more finals, more wins, better W/L record, etc.

Fed has the extra title and the more consistent period of dominance, so it's tough to argue with that.
It is incredibly impressive how Rafa was able to adapt his game to be so good on hard courts, though.

It's obviously Rafa by a light year. Let's not insult Rafa by comparing him to a bum like Federer.

The question is this: Is Federer in the top 200 ever at the USO. I'm not so sure.

Federer was at his peak in 2017, yet needed baby world #70 Tiafoe to choke badly to allow Federer to win in 5 sets in the first round. In round two, world #101 Youzhny had Federer on the ropes, but then Federer scraped by another 5 set win.

2018: Baby Millman that was clearly hobbled by the 98 degree heat index stomped peak Fed that was fresh as a daisy in round 4. Millman didn't have enough practice in those humid conditions. But his killer talent allowed him to slaughter peak Fed, despite the massive disadvantage there.

The clincher is at the 2013 USO. Peak Fed got destroyed in 3 sets by Robredo, the same Robredo that lost to Nadal 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 in the following round. 2013 was the best version of Federer that I've ever seen, especially at the USO. But Robredo was far too evolved for a zoning Federer.

The only fair thing to due is cancel Fed's 5 consecutive titles at the USO. We also need to cancel Fed's 14 consecutive wins vs the top 10 at the USO, mainly because each one of those opponents tanked their matches to Fed. Each one of those guys was the favorite against Fed, yet was paid off to tank to Fed.

Glad I read this post. I was shocked at seeing your name among the others who had voted for Nadal.

As a Nadal fan,

Federer by far.

Nadal has always looked more vulnerable than prime Fed in New York. The fact that Fed didn't win more USOs is unfortunate, he had a number of super close losses to Delpo or Nole. While Rafa was kinda lucky to get 4.

i don't want to give any introduction to this thread, we all know how many times they participated in the slam, who they beat and how many titles they won........let us settle this once and for all........who edges out who in this race at the us open and historically who is greater at this fast hardcourt slam?
Federer dominated 2000-2009 decade winning 5 in a row in that time. Nadal owned the event 2010-2019 winning 4 titles in 8 attempts in that decade. Who is better? 5 is more than 4. So Federer has to have the vote. Best 3 US Open players are Sampras Federer and Connors with Nadal 4th.

Nadal vs Djokovic at the USO is a much better debate.

US Opens won in Strong Era

Federer: 1

Nadal: 4

Not worth discussing.
What is worth discussing is your lack of objectivity.Fed beat more top 10 players en route to his titles and his draws were not easier than Nadal's by any means. Now check Nadal's draw till the final in 2010, and how about 2017 ? That's right, just because he won vs Djokovic in 2010&2013, that doesn't mean his wins were in the strong era and Fed's in the weak era.I forgot that you didn't watched too much tennis before 2008, aham ;)
