He's good. Top 30 material, for sure. He'll climb the ranks over the next 18 months.

to be more successful, I think he needs to "Djokovic-ize" his game. Get faster, and more consistent. His power + variety are already top 30 material for sure

Who does he look like? Someone specific - singer, actor - somebody. I can't place it. The commentators are saying mullet-era Agassi. I guess sort of.

I think if Wolf can improve his volley and learn to hit sharper angles on his groundstrokes, that'll bump him up to the next level. I'm going to say it - future Top 10 player. I see more potential in him than in Sock.

I'm not a fan of the show but I'm absolutely sure that Trailer Park Boys has a character that looks exactly like JJ.

Med giving props to JJ for doing so well in his first major. I think JJ tried everything in the first two sets and just came up short; power is the basis of his game and he couldn't out-power Med. Tried to S&V, but his volleying skills aren't good enough yet for it to be a weapon against guys like Med. Still played a great match; there were glimpses of greatness but it wasn't consistent. It also looked like he was really disappointed in the loss, which is a good sign; it means that he's hungry and will probably learn from this match to further improve his skillset. I'm happy that Med gave him an absolute beating to show him what it takes to break into the top.

A 6'0" player serving and volleying a 6'7" baseliner; now I've seen it all ...
Tad shy of 6 foot, maybe an inch or so. But kid will be climbing up higher & booming serve for his height too. That low ball toss hitting at top of toss & using legs to get up to ball shows in his serves. Who else his height can hit in 130s? Crazy.

Yes, JJ Wolf did well but he needs to get into the main draw with his own performance, not through wild card. Med clearly gave Wolf a spanking today. I say this with no joy as as alum of Ohio State U.

I have no problem with him getting in on a wild card if he can beat his opponents in the first two rounds as well as he did. Having won multiple challenger titles in only his first year as a pro, I think he deserved it.

Med is a unicorn. So tall and lanky, but moves on the court better than players several inches shorter than him, and he hits so well on the run. I don't know how his joints can sustain all that pounding on the hard courts.

In addition to crushing it on challenger tour (4 titles), he literally just made it through qualifying of the preceding Masters event, not like he’s not earning his way

I saw JJ Wolf for the first time this tournament, didn't know he existed (sorry JJ)

Well, finally an American player with great qualities and the tools above the shoulder to beat the best.

Immediately I remembered Johnny Mac when I saw him at 18yrs old physically and how confident he moves.

However, JJ strokes are pretty similar to David Nalbaldian... with a better serve, more powerful and variety. Somehow attacks the ball also a lot like Connors and moves as well.

Very happy that a player of this talent is going to reaffirm US tennis.

BADDLY NEEDED !!!!

He just need to watch some videos of Nalbaldian when he beat all 3 GOATs twice in a row... how he opened the point and close it. He has the tools.

In the video, I notice about Wolf serve. His legs are not straighten out at the point of contact between the ball and the racquet and he does not have what so called a "scissors kick" like Fed or Djokovic.

Does Wolf even qualify to play at the French Open?

Yes he could be in the main draw.

'Legit good' means Top 50 and stay?
Top 50 then descend.
Top 50 with a bullet?
There are many a good players from 150 on up. Since no American but Roddick has impressed in the last 15 years...I say 'Meh good'

Unfortunately, our guy lost in the first round of qualifying at RG. I was hoping he could at least make it into the main draw to get some points. I’m guessing that based on his attacking game style, clay isn’t his favorite surface. He lost to 4&3 to an Italian who I’m assuming likes to play on clay. Unfortunately he’s 31 and has never cracked the top 150. Hopefully, he can get some match wins on HC this year once RG is over.

wouldn’t have expected him to make it through RG qualifying at this point with his style, but in 6 more months his ranking will be a tiny bit higher and he’ll be done with GS qualifying matches

Benjamin Becker had the biggest serve of a sub-six foot player that I've seen.

How do you make such a prediction, out of thin air? Wolf's game is so unpredictable that you really don't know what you expect from him. Look at his record since the beginning of the year. He got a wild card entry into the US Open and won a couple of matches before getting his ass kicked by Med. Everyone can get lucky, just saying.

Wolf beat Pella (rank 36 at the time) at the USO, and Baena (rank 101st at the time). in Cincinnati, he beat a 70th player and a 104th before crashing out against an aging and washout Gasquet. Before Cincinnati, he lost to Thomas Belluci who ranked 337th at the time, Emilio Gomez (ranked 156th at the time). At the AO, he lost to Grungelliti (rank 201st at the time). How could he move up the ranking by losing to lower rank opponents?

Not to mention he lost to a Gators freshman in the NCAA single tournament in 2019

Inconsistency is commonplace among new pros on tour; many of the current top players were also inconsistent in their early years on tour before they became famous. When Wolf is playing at his best, his game is special. I wouldn't call his wins in the first two rounds of the US Open "lucky." They would only be lucky wins if his opponents played terribly. He outplayed them fair and square and showed glimpses of his potential. Do you think Lorenzo Musetti is potentially a top player? Following your logic, his record on tour would suggest not, as he has recently lost to pretty “bad” players.

he’s barely played on tour so far and is already ranked 120, it’s a fairly obvious assumption he’ll be able to get that ranking up a bit more to be in GS main draws automatically

describing his run to the third round of the us open as potentially just getting lucky tells me all I need to know about your bias re: Wolf, he had just made it through qualies at W&S the week before, and he’s won numerous challengers - I guess he gets lucky a lot

sorry you don’t like him, but #120 is no longer going to be his career high six months from now

your sentence “how could he move up rankings losing to lower ranked opponents” is too dumb to answer - his ranking has made a rapid climb since he joined the tour, so whether you give your stamp of approval to his ATP points and ranking or not, it’s working

That's the thing. Not everyone can play at his/her best all the times.

He'll be able to? There is no sure thing on the ATP tour.

He didn't make into the USO by qualifying or by his ranking. He got in via a wild card. Everyone can be lucky with a couple of matches, until he ran into Med.

It’s called predicting a future outcome based on an existing trend. The trend points to him breaking into top 100 in the near future, hardly a prediction pulled out of “thin air.” And you clearly don’t understand what lucky wins are; please provide a deeper analysis on how Wolf got lucky at the USO based on his level of play, unless of course you didn’t watch any of his matches.

I have ESPN+ so I watched all of his USO matches, including the 3rd roudn match where Med just took him to school.

Well, I guess if Med beat him in straight sets, that precludes Wolf from breaking into top 100. Oh wait, didn’t Med give Tiafoe an even bigger beatdown in the 4th round? Tiafoe is a top 100 player? o_O

Your argument might have traction if Med was ranked outside top 50, but he’s top 10 and didn’t drop a set until the semifinals.

if his point that he wants to shove down our throats is that there’s not a 100% guarantee Wolf and his ranking will continue to improve, you win, great contribution!

there’s an overwhelming chance he will
