Didn’t expect Tsitsipas to fall apart mentally and physically in 5th set

Excellent post. Next gens are mugs and they don't put in the hours.
Not really (re. mugs), some good and decent kids but work ethic is somewhat forgotten in this time and age ... not their fault and that is exactly why they need better coaching and guidance ...

OTOH, I am not sure that it is so easily fixable phenomenon (younger generations and work ethic) ... I look at my kids and see the same struggles ...

Times are changing for sure ...

He made a potentially career altering comeback. It was great to see.
But then he loses 6 games so quickly after being up 1-0 in fifth set, with all the momentum. Disappointing.
Novak is amazing no doubt. If he beats Rafa, he could legitimately claim equal status to the top 2 because of winning 2 or more of each major and 2 or more of all the Masters.

i think he’d be equal to Nadal career wise in greatness and very, very close to Fed.
really? Totally expected it. That’s pretty much what happens every time some young player gets Djoker to a 5th

But why for the men and not the women? Eight different women 23-and-under (the youngest being 19) won her first slam last decade, and another may do so tomorrow. The youngest male to win his first slam last decade? Andy Murray.

Really ? At no point in the match did i have a doubt Djokovic will lose.

The only way for DJokovic to lose against these players is if he is not fully fit and today he did not have any pain.

It is going to be years before Med, Tsistipas, Zverev, Thiem consistently beat Djokovic

Good question ... let me think about it ... I guess somebody has to win !? Eight different ... !?

Not so sure about Murray ... overrated, overworked, overcoached, overhyped ... over !!!

If novak had lost and played the injury card like the city bus did, this forum would be in total meltdown beating down djokovic and calling him be imprisoned for life or better yet sentence him for death. Since it's not Djokovic, it's perfectly fine and it has to be genuine.

We have a lot of tools in this board.... Just saying

He was injured.
From the Tsitsipas presser: "Unfortunately towards the end of the match an injury that I had during my match in Rome came back. It was difficult to close the match in a fighting way, in a fighting spirit".
I thought he was cramping. This may explain it too.

This Cramp away cures cramps within 5 seconds, james blake uses it and swear by it. Give me personal phone number of Tsitsipas, and will talk him into taking this next time.

No excuses ... 33 year old Djokovic is in better physical shape than a young 22 year old ...

Hit the gym Stefanos, not Instagram ... work with nutritionists, trainers, PT's, fitness coaches ... expand your team, make the presence of your father smaller ...

Still plenty of time for Stefanos but hopefully he learned from this a lot !
+1. I don't have a problem with his Instagram essays if it helps him stay positive, but he definitely needs to focus on his fitness, probably hire a team of specialists like Djokovic did, and really take that aspect of his game to the next level. The tactics are there, the shotmaking is there. He's a strong guy, but if he can improve his endurance, he will be a serious force to be reckoned with.

If you can't outlast a 33 year old - even if its Djokovic - you're not ready to be an elite. (I say this as an amateur who wouldn't last 10 points at the pros' pace).

Sadly, that is quite probable.

Overrated, overworked, overcoached, overhyped ...

Sad to say, that is probably a very good definition of the younger generation......

......except for the overworked bit.

Don't get me wrong ... Murray is a legend of the sport ...

But seriously ... maybe 10-15 on the ATG list ?

Now, these youngsters would be wrong to look upon Murray as their achievement goal ...

They have to be hungrier than that .

Might be worth reminding people that this is the third week in a row that Tsitsipas has been playing while Djokovic had a week off in between Rome and RG. Doesn't explain it all, but I'd be tired if I was in my second five-setter of the tournament in the SF after having made it to the final of a previous tournament just days before.

This schedule is so weird.

I disagee.

I thought he was completely broken mentally after the first 2 sets, he looked like he was about to cry. All the missed BPs, and then losing on 40-0 twice. But then he comes back and wins 2 sets.

I think he got what it takes, but one step at a time. He just turned 22.

Laughable, they should know better if they want to compete for major titles going forward ...

Lol , Saving your God is not everyone's duty.

Tsitsipas tried. He did well ,might have won without the physical issue or at least made it closer.

I am so done with hate being thrown at Dominic and other just because they can't save Nose's record.

It’s the times we live in. Our current culture has emasculated men and took away their masculinity, in a mental and behavioral way, of course. The women on the other hand have more fight in them than men. You can see that young ladies like Kenin and Gauff have more aggression in them than young men like Tsitsipas, Sinner or FAA who are strong but mentally passive. The women are the modern times samurai.

It is pathetic that a 22 years old is so much physically weaker than a 33 years old.

his legs couldn't take the load, really a shame.........i think playing hamburg till the finals just before the slam played a part here, he looked finally tired and gassed in the fifth........ultron was losing, just his superior fitness saved him in the end........rafa will take care of him in the final........

Tsitsipas had geniune chances to win this in 4 sets, he messed up so many breaks points although more than made up for it in 4th set but beating such champion from 2 sets down is too much of a task to turn true

Of all the next gens, it's Tsitsipas that impresses me most when it comes to physique.

Extremely explosive and light on his feet, cat-like reflexes, ability to hit a winner from anywhere on the court, improvisation.

Should he improve on his relative lack of power in his shot and too many misses, he could be a legend in his own right.

Yesterday i really thought he was going to give Novak the business after making him choke on his lead.

It would have totally crushed the Serbian.

Q. You are a very passionate player. Everyone saw that out on the court today. Why does winning or losing mean so much to you?

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS: It’s a very good question actually. I was thinking about it the other day. Well, let’s take it this way. If I wouldn’t win, if I wouldn’t be winning, I wouldn’t be part of what I am now. I wouldn’t be part of the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy.

I wouldn’t be, let’s call it, a celebrity in my country. No one would knew me. It’s all because of winning, of succeeding, managing to find ways to win matches. I wouldn’t make money from tennis. I don’t know what I would be doing, but tennis wouldn’t be part of my life. Winning has provided a lot. Of course, good ways and bad ways. There are some deficits.

Yeah, without winning I wouldn’t have my sponsors. Without winning I wouldn’t be traveling all around the world. Losing kind of keeps you in the same place, in the same spot, which is why I hate losing. Of course, I think everyone hates losing. It’s weird if you don’t hate losing.

But I guess a loss is a very good lesson where life puts a stop at what you’re doing. You can reflect on that. You can grow. You can get better. You can take that loss and turn it around, use it as a life lesson to move forward, to become a stronger person.

A pretty disappointing answer especially when you consider how well thought through it is. He likes winning because of what it can bring him, fame, money, travel, celebrity .... all good, but what about a love for the game? A burning love for competition?

You know, getting to semi-finals of slam and masters will bring a whole lot of fame, money, travel and celebrity to a Greek lad. How much more is Tsitsipas willing to give to make that huge next step and win one of these things? I don't think that Thiem is as talented as Tsitsipas but I have no doubt about who wants it more.

Loving the game is often a negative, because if you love the game too much you might not learn your lesson from losing.
You might say "I lost but I had a lot of fun and enjoyed the match".
If you enjoy tennis even when you lose, that means you are too accepting of losing.
There are no prizes for loving tennis.
You often see club level players who love tennis and they love playing their favorite shots.....but that doesn't help them improve necessarily, because they are ignoring their weakest shots and are therefore not improving.

Compare that with Rafa's typical answers to similar questions:

“There is no formula. It is important to have the passion for what you do, if you do not feel the passion for tennis it is impossible. But you have to surround yourself with the right people and who will help you every day, because there will be times when you will be tired and there are people who make you reach the highest level. You have to be a worker and have a good team “,

“All my career everybody has said that because of my style I will have a short career, but I am still here. I am still here because I love what I am doing. I still have the passion for the game. I am going to keep fighting and working hard to keep enjoying this tour and keep having chances to compete at the highest level.”

“If you don’t have the will to improve, you don’t understand sport, because sport is always about improving,” he says. “That’s the meaning of sport. It’s playing with the dream of doing something better than what you were doing before. When you’re not working with the passion to do something better, I think that sport loses its sense.

“I don’t understand going on court just to practise,” he says. “I go on court to improve something. That’s the way that I understand my career, the way that I understand sport. I really don’t find the motivation to go on court if I don’t have the goal of trying to do something better. And when the day arrives when that is not the case, that’s going to be the day that I’ll take a boat out and go fishing.”

Nadal has always had such a great way to approach the sport he loved. Loving the sport drives you but you have to approach your love rationally or it won't work out that well...

So, if the younger players can't win slams due to a lack of experience, it takes us back to my initial question...why for the men and not the women?
WTA and ATP are basically different sports. Also, there is no 56 slam 3 headed monster in WTA, just over-the-hill Serena.
