Your Main Forehand Grip

Isn't that grip hard to change to from a backhand? Especially since you have to hit the ball well in front of you? Just curious.

I knew SW was the most popular among non-beginners. Still, if 60% of players play with SW, that could translate into lack of creativity and limited tactics used. I tried SW, but it was hard for me to function as an all-courter this way. That and my lack of confidence in it was hurting my 2HBH, my best stroke. ExE just seems a natural fit for me. Can hit flat, topspin, and can roam the court easier.
I'm surprised not that many selected Western. That strokes generates the most topspin and hordes of power. I would try it, but I'm afraid of breaking my wrist using that grip.

I use in between eastern and semi western and switch grips accordingly from eastern to semi

I used to use SW, but I switched w/o too much problem. I just went to the grip that was directl between Sw, then to nearly full W
(i'm only 14 too, though that could add to my flexibility)

comeon i used the eastern and switched to the wester, ive never hurted my wrist nor my arm*shoulder etc, with 10 minutes with it ull start getting it its a good grip, the sw.. well i just dont feel comfortable with it

im hitting eastern right now... i tried semi-west but it didnt benefit by game.. actually it screwed it over

I used to use Eastern forehand grip but I got the ball wide many times so changed to Extreme Eastern. I can generate more topspin now but my 1 hand backhand has suffered from this change
I think that it has to do with the fact that with the Extreme eastern I hit the ball a bit sooner and since my backhand was always a flat shot I have to hit the ball a bit later if I want it to stay in and therefore it's a bit confusing. Any ideas how I can change my backhand to accommodate this change?

With the continental you can't generate topspin whereas with the SW you can generate loads of topspin while hitting flat if the ball is hit at the right moment.
With the continental it's easier to hit the ball long because of the flatness of the shots whereas with the SW it's easier to keep the ball in and hit with a greater variety of angles.

The one advantage of continental is that if you use it for both forehand and backhand, you don't have to change your grip at all. You could use it for almost every shot from serves, groundstrokes, and volleys.
It is harder to generate topspin though. And if you choose this grip, I'd suggest you work on serve and volley. Edberg and McEnroe used continental, but their forehand was their weakest shot.

Semi-western is very good at generating topspin. You can hit flat shots with it, though not as easy as an Eastern. Because it's very good at topspinning, you'll rarely hit into the net with it.
The disadvantages are that you have to hit it further in front than an Eastern. And it is not good with low balls. Also, most semi-Western players prefer to stay at the baseline, so if you like net-rushing you might feel awkward as you're changing grips.

I am allcourt leaning to baseline and use a semi western, then again i play on green clay most of the time.

i use a eastern hybrid. i think thats the same as an extreme eastern.

what do you call a grip where the 'v' of your hand is lined up with the long bevel of the racket? like inbetween an eastern and a semiwestern.

I've tried to put more topspin in my game the last several years, but just gradually messed my groundstrokes up until I could hardly hit the ball at all. I finally went back to hitting flat and have gotten better again. It's just hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Even though at high altitude there is far less margin for error on flat shots than at sea level (about the equivalent of a 7 foot shorter area to hit into) I'm still better off hitting my natural shot. I've always been able to hit big topspin with any grip from Continental to Western, but I've just never done it as more than a novelty..

our old tennis team captain used a Hawaiian to hit offensively and used a continental to hit defenisvely. It worked out pretty well for him, but he probally could have played more evenly with our leagues top players if he used a more conventional grip. To bad he went back to a semi-western AFTER he graduated.
