Something I am noticing on Social Media and here

That Thiem has loads of support now. The fans may not be dedicated fans but they wanted him to win.

It seems he has been accepted by the tennis fandom as the man who would(or rather should ) take over after the big 3

Medvedev isn't getting half the love for winning, even when he was the undefeated winner here.

People are mostly amused or simply irritated that it wasn't Thiem who won.

I am happy for Medvedev, Happy for Thiem too.

Let's see who does better in 2021.

It's been encouraged by tennis media in general.

I mean it's not hard to see why. People want to cheer for a slam champion and not a non slam champion, even if it is someone as hilarious as Medvedev.

Thiem finally broke the 1990's slam hoodoo, if Medvedev had done it, he would've been cheered but he didn't, he lost to Nadal in 5 sets at last years USO final.

It is a direct proof that everyone has already acknowledged the ridiculous problem with the lack of younger ATGs. It is going for so long that even the general tennis audience which doesn't normally care fur such things wants that situation to be over, hence the support for the player closest to be something similar.

If I could snap my fingers and have Fed, Nadal, Djoker, Murray and the Williams sisters retire today...well let's just say I'd thrown on Queen's "Under Pressure" this very second.

Thiem’s huge backhands are a thing of beauty. I watched the WTF semi with some non tennis fans, and even they were in awe at some of his BH winners.

Medvdev’s play used to be boring when he was a bit younger (ie AO 2019). Everything was central and cross court.
However I now find him oddly entertaining to watch. He can change direction of the ball really well, go big DTL on both wings, and has high tennis IQ.

I think we all need to be clear about something, these are Thiem's best years right now. He won't be "taking over" after the Big 3. By the time they're actually gone, Thiem will be on the decline as well. We see how much he already struggles to win finals even when they're not around and he's the favorite. Hopefully he'll get to #1 at some point, but it's not exactly a guarantee.

There is no production line of ATGs so there's no problem there, ridiculous or otherwise, and the current situation of three 15 plus slam winners playing won't be repeated anytime soon.

Not to take anything away from Thiem but I really do wonder if that whole French open Serena incident combined with Whoopi Goldberg also bringing it up on her show gave him some unintended publicity and brought him to the attention of people who would normally not care. Obviously winning the slam helped massively and he's been a nice guy outside of court but i truely wonder if thats what got the media ball rolling (at least for non-tennis fans) for him.

What can I say? Thiem is just too epic :D

Tsitsipas seems to have quite a fanbase on social media too, though I don't know how much of that is due to his tennis.

I mean...look at the other alternative choices being offered.

I think being a slam champ helps Thiem get popular. I was happy to see either win.

Thiem's aggressive and explosive style is naturally appealing to many people compared to Medvedev.
How many of us would just love to hit haymaker forehand after haymaker forehand until your opponent submits? Many of us try to play that style of game to lose day after day but want to crush it, even if we could win if we were a little craftier like Medvedev. But his game style isn't as primally appealing

To new tennis fans and viewers Medvedev's appears to be a high level pusher when against a guy like Thiem.
Medvedev isn't a pusher, but when you watch the 2 play, Thiem is almost attacking every ball while they Medvedev is daftly retrieving and redirecting the incoming onsalught.
Feels like Medvedev rarely cracks a big winner, but will set up the point so he can redirect your firepower into a winner. A more subtle and probably effective way to win, but harder to appreciate from a first glance at their games.

I was so impressed by his variety at the net which was totally absent in 2019.
He really can play and impose himself from there, thanks to his huge wing span.

Also, he can now accelerate the pace of the ball for an instant winner from anywhere on the court.

Thiem is just having his day in the sun.

The likes of FGOATvedev, Zverev, Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov, SINner, etc. are the "meek who shall inherited the Earth".

Dominic just will not be able to withstand this onslaught from his younger contempariries.

Thiem has been around far longer than Medvedev and Medvedev only started to gain popularity near the end of the last year. Before 2019 the general tennis population had no idea who he was, I know I didn't. Before Medvedev got on the scene Thiem had made it to multiple slam finals and was known for that classic match at the USO with Nadal, it only makes sense that he would have a larger fan base.

Hero of the masses. Plays power tennis and power is all the common "OMG I bought a Babolat, look at me!"-average tennis joe fan knows.

No every tennis fan can handle and process the subtle and finesse of true artists like Simon, Kyrgios or the new big cat Medvedev.

Thiem's personality was humble and likable until recently, now he's full of himself.
Medvedev is the most humble and classy of the new stars and has the most unique game, so I'll support Medvedev after Nadal retires with 25+slams.

Kidding aside, I'm a fan of both Medvedev and Thiem. Different styles, different attitudes, but both equally fun to watch. I think the only one of the new batch I'm not a fan of is Zverev, but I'm still hopeful he'll grow out of the whiney little kid that has no 2nd serve into the player he should be.

That gif is a good example of Medvedev's charisma and uniqueness.
Medvedev and Nadal are both humble and classy guys while still providing entertaining personality.

I like Thiem, but I'm #TeamMed on this one

Thiem is an excellent player, but he's also an extreme ball basher without much gameplan variety.

While Med is a bit of a servebot, but he actually does more varied stuff to win the points, and shows some quick thinking out of the box. Even his serve game is kind of entertaining (with the random second 1st serves and whatnot).

Also, he's a low spin player with good defense, which is rare nowadays. He brings something unique to the table, moreso than Thiem IMO who's kind of a Nadal/Wawrinka hybrid.

I often make some digs at Thiem, but even I will always root for him over Medvedev.

Medvedev is the opposite of likeable. The much needed villain, who was lacking on tour since Djokovic fell apart in 2016.

(I'm not sure of the social media aspects, but...
Generally, I like almost all players on tour. Team sports present a different dynamic to me, in that there are built-in rivalries.)

In Thiem's case, I find his style exciting, and he gives it his all while being a truly good sportsman. Hard not to like. And while a bit of a "basher", I thought that his tactic of bringing Novak into the net helped him win his WTF semi.

When I first saw Med, he reminded me just a little of Mecir. Their games aren't really the same, and I think "The Big Cat" was the more pure shotmaker. But Med has that quiet, deceptively quick movement, and is rather quirky. Of the two, I prefer Domi, but Med seems to have the game and the intangibles to be a contender for quite a while.

With you 100%.
You can never know what they are like in ‘real life’ but Thiem seems genuine and a classy. Always super respectful to opponents, works his ass off, appreciates what he has etc. Hard to not like this guy.

Med is cool AF. Hope he stays the same and more funny **** is on the way.
