Is this Fed's last chance to win the Grandslam?

He's getting on a bit, a lot of player are coming through, Nadal has yet to hit his prime, I'm not saying he'll never win the french but if he doesn't win tonight can he possibly ever win the grand slam,(all 4)?

I'd say each year he does not win the GS, it becomes less likely that he ever will. Obviously, the French Open is the most critical of the four for him, and he's just beaten Nadal on clay in their last meeting, so if he doesn't win it now, he probably never will.

Gorilla, you threw in a remark, "Nadal has yet to hit his prime" that I'd argue with. I think he's at his prime and can't get much better. His game is a bit one-dimensional, but he completely owns that one dimension. Hard to imagine he can improve without totally changing his style.

how's he one dimensional?HE can grind, blast or finesse. He's a better net player than fed.

Gorilla,

hahaha, that was funny. Nadal a better net player than Federer? He's improved, but he's no-where near Federer in net-play. He might be better than Roddick at net-play, but not Federer.

What a laugh. Federer has great hands at the net. That's where his natural talent comes in.

As McEnroe said, he got 2 years. He still can do it next year, but next year should be his last chance given his age.

Federer is better at the net but the net game is not so important in today´s tennis. By the way Nadal´s game is more complete than last year: better serve, much better backhand, more efficient inside forehand and better volley. He´s far from one-dimensional. I´m thinking of someone in the top 5 with a much more one-dimensional game.

There goes your tennis credibility, forever, in that one sentence. Absurd.

peter Fleming's words, not mine. ;)

Peter Fleming: 7 grandslams, world number 1 doubles player.

Orangeone: uhhhh...

There goes your dignity, yoiu cranky aussie git.

Gorilla,

Peter who? Oh, that guy who never was anything significant as a singles player? And as a doubles player, he basically rided on McEnroe's tail?

You can bet your hat that among Laver, Borg, McEnroe, Sampras, Wilander, Edberg, etc etc not one of them thinks Nadal's netplay is better than Federer's.

Federer has the net-talent to be a pure S&V player.

''rided''

????

what are you like 8?

fleming reached world number 8 in singles, he won 4 wimbledon titles and 3 us opens and lived at the net, I think he knows a ''more natural'' volleyer when he sees one.

I'm not doubting you but can you post a source to where Peter Fleming said that? I never thought anyone in their right mind would say Nadal's a better volleyer than Federer.

he said it after Nadal and Moya played Federer and Wavrinka. It was pretty obvious if you watched the match actually.

I'd say that next year is his last chance.. than age will start to be a factor. Then again.. Federer seems to be a natural mover with a style that doesn't seem to bring in a lot of injuries, so maybe he has 2 years left or more.

Sorry? A better net player? Is this a joke? I hope it is a joke or else you are putting your general credibility on the line..

No way did you just say that. Kiss any small measure of credibility you had goodbye.

I don't think this is Feds last chance.

Federer will win the us open, wimbledon and probably aus open for the foreseeable future.. he'll prob put himself in this position again and again.

I think as time goes by his chances will dwindle. Nadal will just get more and more confident against him. It's only going to get tougher for Roger

But like another poster has said he will be in the postion for the GS for a couple of more years but his challenges will become tougher

Why do people keep bagging Nadal for being 1 dimensional? The man has the record number of consecutive claycourt wins. He doesn't need another dimension.

As for Peter Fleming, if my mother partnered McEnroe she would have won Wimbledon.

Also, Peter Fleming was misquoted. Nadal is a better wet player. His muscles look better when they are wet.

Federer will be 26 in August. 26 is not that old.

It's got to be now. So many things can happen at this point; injury, young players start reaching their potential, Mirka wanting a baby, boredom, whatever. If he doesn't do it this time, I don't know.

I think he still has 2 years left after this to win the GS.Fed is a consistent guy, he is always in good shape.27 is not old in tennis.

Nadal DOES have a better volley than Fed in SOME matches. Fed can be simply horrible in net play department when he's off, but I've never seen Nadal doing so poorly at the net even when he's off. So it is acceptable to say that Nadal can be a better volleyer than Fed sometimes.

Yep, after losing 3 of the last 4 matches Nadal's confidence really improved. You're clutching at straws here.

I think Fed's best chance is this year, but he might have a couple more left, in which he could possibly win. In regards to volleying, Nadal may have improved, but Fed is miles ahead in terms of that dept, in fact, didn't he used to be a serve and volleyer at the start of his career?

While I understand your point, many things go into winning a slam. So even if he were not to win it this year against the current best player on clay, who is to say he wont make it back to the final against different player in the future. Nadal could be hurt or upset, and Federer is good enough to beat most of the clay court players of today. So while this is a golden opportunity for him, he will probably have a few more chances to win the French in the future.

Last year at the French during the final the commentators were saying near the end of the match how disappointed roger must be knowing it would be the last time he would be holding the other 3 majors at the same time and his last chance to be able to hold all 4 at the same time...
This last year, nobody has shown they can even come close to beating Federer in any of the other majors, why would this next year be any different

HOHOHO! WOW...did this kid just say Nadal has better hands at net than Roddick? When did this happen. Did u even watch Masters Cup last year when Arod was avg 50+ Approaches to net? If Nadal serve+volleyed a whole match as his main tactic i guarentee he would not win.

Gorillaman, what were you thinking?

Nadal is at his prime NOW, he won't be getting much better. Fed is among the most talented players, and much of his skill at net is equaled only by doubles specialists, some great s&vers, and the old greats.

And this is hopefully not fed's last chance at the grand slam.

People keep comparing nadal to hewitt and chang, he reminds me more of borg, his best has yet to come.

His game is more similar to hewitt and chang's than borg's. Borg had great success on all surfaces, won so many slams, and retired at the age of what, 25?
Hope nadal dosnt do that.

Hewitt and chang are incredibly fast, weak, short counterpunchers who occasionally resort to pushing.
Nadal is a 6 foot 2 inch beast who has the biggest forehand in tennis, the best passing shots, got to the wimbledon final on grass last year, and has two hard court masters titles.

idiot.

Excuse me. Are you twelve years old or something. Aren't you the same guy that didn't know anything about rackets in some other thread you started?

He's 6 1' according to the stats at atp tennis. So what if he's jacked, if some wrestler started playing tennis the fact that he's ripped wouldn't mean anything.

Hewitt and Chang are weak? They're stronger then you'll ever be, and they're quite strong actually. Just because they play tactical tennis and don't go blasting at every shot like roddick doesn't mean they're weak. They won grandslams, chang at 17, did your hero nadal do that? NO.

How many masters do hewitt and chang have smart one? Did hewitt not WIN wimbledon, thats kinda one step farther than nadal isn't it.

Idiot.

Get more confident? He's lost 3 of their last 4 meetings.

Hewitt = AO-F, FO-QF, W, UO, UO-F, Number 1 in world for 1.5 years+
Nadal. = AO-QF, FO (2), W-F, UO-QF, Number 2 in world for 2+ years

I know Nadal may add to this tally today, and I know Nadal is at a higher peak that Hewitt career-wise and is younger too, but I have to think of the above careers, right now, Hewitt has (obviously) a much better career as an all-round tennis player.

i have a feeling that Roger might win tomorrow...;) if Nadal let him, and in return, when they meet agian in wimbledon final, it's nadal turn to win if roger let him. Fair trade

lol. If I were federer I wouldnt, I think wimbledon 5 times in a row is more important than winning an FO (IF he can set himself up for another grand slam next year) but if he doesn't, then he should really consider the offer.

you do know that fed can win wimbledon any day but FO...maybe once in a life time or so...that's why he needs this trade if he could:p
