I think he should hire John Mcenroe, John had some real nice comments today during the match coverage. like fed should use the slice more and come in on short approaches to nadal's backhand. and Move in and take the returns early and block the returns back instead of trying to clobber it and so on and so on.;) Oh and Maybe John can teach him some of his bratty behavior as well and then maybe fed will be fun to watch.

He should get Borg before the next clay season.
Sampras is his teenage idol, but he never achieved better than Fed himself did. so Fed needs to find another great to motivate him.

I think he'd have to hire Mike Tyson to be able to lose that much money. Bjorn Borg wasn't anywhere close to that level of money-losing...Fed's gotta be over 100 mil by now; Bjorn would have thought 100 mil was a joke, like in the first Austin Powers.

I wander who the 20 or 30 applicants for coaching job are so far.

It would be an intertaining team, that's for sure. Mcenroe could fire balls at feds head to sharpen his reflexes up and get him animated. I'd like to see a bit of emotion and a few flying fist pumps.

federer got to the final without a coach, and got to the final last year with roche

i dont think he needs a coach right away, but maybe he should seriously think about at least consulting with mutliple people...i'll recommend john mcenroe, daren cahill, gil reyes, sampras, borg, and guga...

maybe lendl and courier as well....

He made the same observations last year as well. Roger seemed to do better with his BH this time, but his normally reliable serve and mighty FH let him down or maybe Rafa's FH was just mightier.

Well, Roger was quoted saying he believed the tactics used last year were the right ones and he stuck with them again. Unfortunately, they produced the same results.

he does the same thing without a coach as he does with one...he loses at RG and wins the other three Grand Slams!;)

Yes, I think Federer needs a coach.

I mean even I could have given him a better strategy on how to beat Nadal in the RG final than the one that he used himself - which appeared to be no strategy at all.

Fed will probably break all the records without a full-time coach but if he would have only listened to the advise from Tony Roche, rather than parting ways, about playing more aggressive and attacking service returns more often, especially on break point opportunities against Nadal then he would very likely have a career slam now. I dont think his strategy and game is going to change now and I think his chances of winning a French are slipping away.

I personally think that if Federer had a coach it would help him out un more ways than one. Look what Roche did for Federer last year at the French. He still lost but he learned more strategy. Not only that but someone to talk with about your game and to advise you can really lift the weight off your shoulders

I think the guys saying Federer didn't have a gameplan against Nadal are nuts and didn't watch the match. He was indeed quite aggressive. Did you see the 2nd set?

He lost largely because his serve -- which has nothing at all to do with Nadal -- and forehand, normally great weapons, weren't working. And of course because Nadal's so good that even someone like Federer has to play his best to beat him on clay.

He doesn't need a coach, but in my opinion should have a coach.

- #1
- Loads of cash on hand
- Very few people would refuse him, if asked
- Why not? he doesn't have to invest tons of time with him, someone to simply give him some perspective, massage his tennis mind

The area he needs help with is mental rather than physical or technical. And part of that is more about undermining Nadal's confidence too. I have a cunning plan for helping Federer win the French Open, does anyone have his phone number?

I voted yes, but probably a psychology coach first.

Or perhaps a hypnotist, so if & when he plays Nadal, Federer thinks he's playing Blake or Roddick.

Just for comparison I re-watched Rome 2006 Fed v. Nadal

Federer played great...fh working, serve working, lots of net points...all was well until....he had 2 Championship points in the fifth game of set 5, and in the tie-break And he couldn't convert. After set five Madal was on fire and announced to Federer that he was going to win. and he did.

Nadal played the really big points better than Federer did, and the commentator said that Federer had no hope of winning RG 06 now.

Nadal is all about being in Federer's head, and the RG final was a mere shadow of the above match when Fed played his best clay game.

Every champion has a tormentor...and Nadal is Roger's. Psychological coaching is what he needs, but I'm not sure it would help. now. Too deeply lodged in his mind?

Good post. I agree about the psychological training bit. While watching the final a couple of days ago I remember thinking "What if Federer just ignored the fact that Nadal was playing across the net?". I'm sure he would have been a different player. Too much thinking did the damage. He needed to concentrate on his own game but ended up doing the opposite.

I'd like to see him get a clay court tactical coach. He has proven that he needs no coach on any other surface against any other player. However, he hasn't been able to topple Nadal on clay, except for Hamburg, although he comes closer than anyone else. I personally feel like Fed has the skills to do so, but just wasn't using the right tactics. He should have done more against Nadal's second serve, like crowding the service line, hitting some drop shots, chip and charge, just mix it up, but he was just too predictable. It was frustrating to watch. I think he could practice those things against lesser players in lesser tournaments, so that he would feel comfortable using them in big matches when it counted. McEnroe would be the ideal person to teach him those things.

If you think Federer needs just a clay-court coach, choosing any former players who haven't coached at the 'highest' level wouldn't work. Instead how about someone who taught Kuerten? Bruguera? basically any caoch who has taught past FO champions ....

Yes, Fed needs a tactical coach for clay play

The first thing that coach should do is study all clay matches played by Nada. He should then select those points/games that worked against Nada. Then forumulate that into a success strategy that Fed can use against him. The paradoxical problem Fed faces is his own success. He is so good, he never has to think or change or experiment or probe the other guy for weakness or try to yank the other guy out of his comfort zone. It just doesn't matter on any other surface, Fed dominates all. He is so un-used to having to alter his game to exploit an opponent's weakness, that when that one match rolls around every year (the FO finals vs Nada) he is incapable (so far) of executing alternative tactics.

good points stinky and caulcano. We agree he's gotta do something different, if he wants a different result. If he's satisfied with the past three French Opens, then keep doing that.

I agree that Fed needs a coach; however, it is hard to get someone that can bring something more to Federer's game, and be someone that Roger respects. It'll either be a past champion, or a coach known for that winning mentality. But who?

My personal vote is Darren Cahill. I've heard many good things about that guy.

Phil Jackson will probably be free soon, and since Roger has no friends that aren't at the top of their respective sports, why not Phil Jackson??

Federer has proved that he can win Majors w/o a couch. But as a long term player you still need to hear it from someone.
