Laver did it.

Borg did it twice.

Rafa did it twice.

Fed did it.

But who has not?

It would have been at its greatest after the proliferation of graphite, but before the advent of polys, and likewise before the switch to intentionally slower grass at Wimbledon.

Which, of course, is why it was never achieved in that era.

Well, to be fair, it has only happened 3 times this century, and all three were done by the best grass player ever and the best clay player ever.

Not as much as it once was (Look what a fuss was made and what excuses were tossed about last year when the US Open and Roland Garros were played with a 2 week gap between them when up until a couple of years ago that was the - admittedly stupid - regular scheduling for these two slams) time wise, and nature of grass wise, but still a pretty badass feat to make that switch in that short a space of time.

Realistically speaking, in this era the very top players have struggled less with the actual transition from RG to Wimbledon and more with Nadal being near unbeatable at RG.

Funnily enough though, it seems the newer generation has more players that don't transition well from clay to grass. Thiem is 27 and has reached the final at 3 slams, but never had a good Wimbledon.

So the difference between RG and Wimbledon might become more pronounced again.

I wouldn't argue that it is greater than a channel slam for obvious reasons, but interestingly, the list is short for those who have done the Montreal/Toronto, Cincy, US Open hat trick. An underrated feat IMO.

so four in a row doesn't count for this cos it's not "within a year"? i mean it is, just not a calendar year.

well if that doesn't count the next best would have to be a three slam year of some kind, so i'll say ao+rg+wimb since there's more time between those and the ao is a much better tournament than the uso these days.
after that it's the other three surface combo e.g nadal 2010

Yes I believe Thiem said it would be impossible to go deep in both events last year.

Ask a kid this question, he might say winning 3 majors in a year, or winning 3 in a row in a year.
But who are we kidding here?

Of all the possible 2 slam combinations in a given year, and including only since top players targeted all slams, which is the least common result?

To be fair, (and I hate having to side with Djoko fans here whom I mostly detest), holding all 4 slams at the same time hasn't been done since Laver. So there's that.
Well, the question was in a given calendar year. Holding all 4 slams at the same time obviously trumps everything else.

without looking at any data whatsoever i'm gonna say AO-RG

Clearly not as challenging as grand slam combinations, but what about the clay slam? That'd be winning all clay masters1000 plus RG. Only Nadal did it and "just" once (2010).
Answering the question, either AO+RG+W or RG+W+USO. A non calendar year run of 4 consecutive slams has to be up there too. The Nole Slam (not the same as the Djokovic Open) has the issue of not winning W right after RG, which has the challenge of changing fast from one surface to it's antagonic, but it's still a heck of a feat.

I wouldn't argue that it is greater than a channel slam for obvious reasons, but interestingly, the list is short for those who have done the Montreal/Toronto, Cincy, US Open hat trick. An underrated feat IMO.
Nadal has that too (2013).

When Borg did it yeah, now not so much. Still a very impressive achievement, obviously, but back then it was something else.

I value Borg's channel slams as much as a CYGS now.
'greed actually. Not each individually but combined are equal in weight to the Grand Slam in my book

The one reason that I will keep Borg tied with Djokovic if Djokovic wins a 6th Wimbledon.
Djokovic will have to win 7 Wimbledon titles for him to go ahead of Borg.
That is just me tho.

yeah djoker's 4 in a row is underrated tbh, as hard as it is to believe that any major djok achievement is underrated on here these days

It mostly came from Federer fans on the grounds of "Federer would/could have done it if...". Even better lol worthy stuff, from Nadal fans presuming there is no legitimacy if there is no peak Nadal.

Yeah, safe to assume Nadal gets 4 if no injuries lol. Is it safe to assume Nadal gets no "surface slam" with peak Federer/Djokovic around? Is it worthless the way he did it?

21 - 17 if just one point...

No thank you. Just facts.

Combinations of slams and the years it was accomplished in the Open Era. One can say Australian Open was not very popular early on, but even after 2000, AO+RG is the toughest combo (possibly because of months of gap between these slams where form can vary) and W+UO is the most frequently achieved combo.

AO+RG1969, 1988, 1992, 2016, 2021
AO+W1969, 1974, 1994, 1997, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021
AO+UO1969, 1973, 1974, 1988, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2015
RG+W1969, 1978, 1979, 1980, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2021
RG+UO1969, 1977, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1999, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019
W+UO1969, 1974, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1989, 1993, 1995, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2018

EDIT: Updated to include Djokovic's 2021 accomplishments
