Watched Washington University St. Louis play Memphis this Sunday. Memphis won 4-3. Wash U's 1 and 2 were very impressive along with all 3 doubles lines. No D3 ranking out yet but I'd guess they will be a solid top ten.
My sister coached the the #3 player for Wash U in high school.

WashU is pretty much top ten ranked D3 school every year. As you noted they barely lost to Memphis - which is D1 school ranked inside top 30.

In d3 you don't have mandatory practice during off season.
This is likely true but it doesn't stop players from wanting to keep training and playing summertime events. I played D2 and every summer I was able to train more (due to no school work)and play in at least 4-6 tournaments travelling with teammates or other tennis friends.

If 8 players are on the roster and the team is nationally ranked (getting to NCAA tournament) I'd say at least 4 or 5 of them will keep training in the off-season.

Emory has a pretty fantastic facility as well. 4 indoors and 6 outdoors.

When it comes tennis facility, I think University of Mary Washington, located in Frederickburg Virginia, has probably the best tennis facility of any D3 schools out there. It has 12 outdoor and 6 indoor tennis courts, for a total of 18 tennis courts. The indoor tennis facility is absolutely beautiful, with two levels of galleries for watching the match. UMW is a public state university and the tuition is very affordable. I think UMW got some big donors $$$ for that beautiful facility.

@PURETENNISsense Speaking of D3, when I was looking at Challengers, I saw the Case Western's James Hopper (UTR 11.5) went 3 sets in the Cleveland Challenger Qualifier before losing to Evan Song (UTR 13.79) the 6 seed (for Qualis). There were only 2 current D1 players at the event-Kovacevic of Illinois who is in the main draw QFs and Liam Draxl of Kentucky who won one MD match.

It looks like the Challengers are actually archiving videos of matches. If anyone is curious to see if a D3 player can play a competitive match vs an ATP 500ish player, here is the link https://www.atptour.com/en/atp-chal...eland-james-hopper-vs-evan-song/2021/9154/all However dont start until about 57 minutes mark. Hopper lost the 1st and 3rd 1-6 but won the 2nd 7-6 after being down 1-4. I just skimmed the video to get the stats but I am curious what he did (or what Song didnt do) in the 40 min between 1-4 and 7-6 so may watch it later.

I know a few who have played at UMW. One was really good, 3 or 4 time All-American type. Played a year or so of futures after graduation. To your surprise and likely disbelief, he's a physician now!

That's pretty awesome to be honest! That's better than many D1 programs considering many of them don't have indoor facilities.

That's a solid result, should give him some solid confidence off of that match. I'm always excited to see college players making a splash on the ITF and ATP circuits.

I actually now have a vested interest in Wash U not winning it this year and for sure not the next 4 years. My son is heading to one of their competitors next Fall to play.

Our family is super pumped.

It is a relief to have the college decision process behind us. I really tip my hat to next years incoming freshman. They have missed out on a good portion of high school. The college search process was difficult with inability to visit face-to-face, go inside buildings, etc.

Yeah Wash U looks pretty good as they only lost to Memphis this year, I'll go with Trinity (TX) just for the hell of it.
I was at their match with Memphis. Wash U is an excellent team and is my pick too. Any team better will be a shocker to me.

Wow!!!, we actually agree on something. The facility is great and capable of hosting a ITF tournament. The court time a bargain. the outdoor courts were resurfaced this year. Obviously I live in the are play there often.

Congratulations to your son and the family.

Thank you that is very nice. It will be fun. It is a strong school academically and close enough for us to get to watch some of his matches. D3 was a perfect fit as he will get a chance to play at a fairly high level competitively as his team usually is in the playoffs as they are this year. However, in the end it is about academics and preparing for what he wants to do in life.

The school that cost 29K to attend, University Mary Washington, has a much nicer and bigger tennis facility than the school that cost 75K to attend, Emory University, LOL....

Well it's like the 18th ranked college in Virginia so I don't think they're going to charge high tuition.

Tuition for public colleges and universities in Virginia is very much the same +/- a couple of thousands dollars between them, whether it is University of Mary Washington, University of Virginia, or Virginia Tech. UVA might be seen as a much better university than Mary Washington but UVA just can't charge more than UMW. Public universities do not operate that way.

The point I am trying to make is that Emory University charges students tuition that is equivalent to Ivy League Universities and yet it tennis facility is inferior than the 18th ranked public university in the state of Virginia, LOL.

it appears that the point you making is that if tuition is more, that would go hand in hand with better tennis facilities. Universities spend their money in different ways. The long time AD of UMW was the tennis coach.. In all honesty, I don't think are making money on the indoor tennis. The prices are dirt cheap and they have funky hours.

Ok, I mean you can say the same thing about a lot of Universities with high tuition though, why single out Emory ? I don't think schools like Northeastern or NYU have great tennis facilities either. Also Emory is always going to have a better tennis program that Mary Washington because it's a better education.

Both UVA and Virginia Tech has a better tennis facility than Emory and better tennis programs (D1). One can also argue that both UVA and VA Tech provide an education just as good as Emory at less than half the cost, LOL.

UVA is playing USC today in the round of 16.

You're right about UVA for sure, but in terms of tennis, we're talking D3 liberal arts colleges right ?

QF's:
Emory vs. Brandeis
John Hopkins vs. Williams
George Fox vs. WashU
Trinity (TX) vs. CWRU

4/8 from UAA. Almost was 5/8 but George Fox upset Carnegie 5-4.

How were the teams decided this year? Is there a link? Didnt UAA limit competition this spring? What happened to Univ of Chicago?

Sadly, the D3 tennis blog announced they are retiring. I’m not sure how long their excellent past content will be accessible. I found the description below about Pool C. Note that the men’s and women’s number of slots may be slightly different and the totals can change as the number of conferences change.

BusyMom's post from the d3 blog describes it well. I'm not sure what happened with Chicago. Strange to can the season but still have a player in the draw for NCAA singles

That blog post was informative regarding how they determine the number of spots etc, but still doesn’t address HOW and what criteria are used for the pool C selection ...is it from overall win/loss record, how well they did against the conference-winning team or something else?

CHtennis

Ahh yes, if you read more of the blog this was constant frustration. There was no defined criteria, a committee picked the teams that would fit the best for the NCAA, it has been argued that a lot of times they would take teams that would be closest to a region that needed a team. I am sure they tried to do their best but it was really hard to decide a lot years between teams like Brandeis and Redlands.

BusyMom

Each year the blog would try to guess who would get the Pool C slots. Most years they would go to teams in Nescac, UAA and whoever finished second between CMS/ Pomona/ Redlands. It’s similar to how the rankings are done. basically based on the strength of the team’s wins and not having any bad losses. In normal years, there is cross play between conferences that helps with this assessment.

Here’s the list of this year’s conference champs, pool B and Pool C. I’m not familiar with Pool B. It seems like it was used for UAA teams which didn’t have a conference tournament.
