She used to strike me as one of the sweetest, funniest, most likeable personalities in all of sports, and now she comes across as just another stuck up diva complaining about the minor inconveniences associated with a lifestyle affording her millions of dollars and just as many fans.

Money talks.

She doesn't like the spotlight and can't deal with the press...

Here is my new Netflix series about it. ;)
It’s smart in a way, only allow PR-sanitized soundbites and puff pieces about yourself to be released. Why bother even taking the slight chance that something negative could happen?

The funniest part is she is wealthy, famous, and so in demand that she can absolutely get away with it.

Wealthy and famous people in positions of great power over us do the same thing, so why worry about someone of no consequence?

Made it 38 seconds. After " I feel like I'm shriveling " had to just stop. This is the future of sport stars I guess, whine, whine, whine and get a bunch of sympathy likes/follows on INSTA or whatever.

I'm 33 btw, not exactly boomer territory but there you go. We just have more and more of a city-suburb-country divide. Docs like these are straight trash to me.

Exactly. My comment was about the overarching trend in Western society today. The dream is no longer to be rich, famous, and loved. The goal is in fact to be beyond reproach whatsoever ;)

It’s sad, I’m 100% sure Naomi is going to be the “dog whistle” athlete for thinly veiled attacks against social justice and the younger generation. The female LeBron James in ways.

Of course. She's angered a certain part of the tennis "fanbase" with her ever-relevant sociopolitical stands and was not their stereotyping fantasy of the "demure little Japanese girl", and since she stood up for justice (and asserted her belief that she's not obligated to talk to the media if she has a personal issue and/or problem with said media), an ocean of hate and judging everything she does has come her way.

LOL did she just run from the court through the back gate after losing?
Didn't Borg do that one time, shortly before retiring? I don't think this is the end of the match here though, looks like the score is just becoming 6-5

So does this strike anyone else as suspicious?

They have had a documentary in the works all along about Osaka's mental health struggles and the pressure she faces? And just before it releases, she pulls these stunts withdrawing from slams to preserve her mental health, thus generating more interest in this snooze-fest production from Netflix?

What a coinky-dink ;)

Exactly lol, I don't even watch that much WTA these days, but I always had a blast digging through her interviews. And you accurately described a press conference as a "minor inconvenience".

We need to boycott all things Osaka to preserve our mental health.

You're not that fragile. So why do you sound like Aussie D. Fauci. Osaka won't bite you. Why not view it before you decide you don't like it ? It's rare tennis would be featured in any manner on such a large platform. Maybe she'll surprise you.

"I think the amount of attention I get is kinda ridiculous... now here's a documentary that's all about meeeeeeee!"

She's either got really bad management who're in it to make as much money as they can in the shortest space of time, and sod what it does to her mental health, or she's one of those insufferable internet brats who crave attention free of consequence.

very suspicious indeed. usually a documentary and autobiography is released after the player has retired. Now they are doing it while playing :cautious:

It's called Netflix. Too much money and too little aesthetic sense. See a popular star and use her to pull in subscribers. The player is not doing anything. Netflix is paying the big money.

I think both Serena and Djokovic are working on documentaries as well. So we should be getting good insights into the lives of our favourite players over the next year or so!

I love the player, but it seems that behind the pretense of a sweet, innocent, shy girl, lies a formidable businesswoman who wants to end her career with hundreds of millions in the bank.

I'm not even talking about her social justice warrior side, which I find extremely annoying.

In short, she could have become the new darling of women's tennis worldwide, but it's all over.
