What if Fed could...

Do what he did 10 years ago and slay the dragon?

What if he SOMEHOW mustered his strength for one last USO run, as improbable as it seems, and was able to take down Djokovic in a final.

Then he could retire and the fairy tale might be complete.

Does anyone else believe?

I think it's too late now. A glorious run to the QF is more likely. Perhaps an outside chance at the semis, though even that would be unlikely IMO.

I genuinely do. Lol. Being an optimist makes you foolish in a sense, but I can't help having hope for something good to happen if it is within the realm of possible.
If he makes the 2nd week that would be miraculous in itself. He has virtually no chance against djokovic, the main next gen stars or even Nadal there.

I feel like we all went through this just a month ago. Are we really going there again?

I think with a relatively challenging draw he would go out in the first week. If he got an easy start he may make 2nd week then probably get thrashed by a next gen star, Djokovic or Nadal if he meets them last 16 or quarters.

Federer is skipping Olympics?

He has more chance to beat Djokovic there than bo5.

Ofcourse both the players might skip it

See, I kind of understand that but it doesn't stop my brain visualizing Federer somehow prevailing. Against all odds. It's a nice delusion to have as a fan.
Fair enough. Is Fed even gonna play the us open? I mean his presser after his quarter final defeat hardly instilled much confidence to his fans for the future.

He almost did in Wimbledon...

Even if he does get to a slam final, if Djokovic is there he won't win it. He would need the absence of Djokovic again.

Fed hasn't won uso since 2009(?) and has often been injured there. He's just way too under prepared and lacking matches. He would need to play a lot of tournaments and still retain his fitness for bo5 until uso.

*Could* this happen? Extremely unlikely but sure.

Will it happen? No, Federer is not one of the players who could take Djokovic down right now.

If it happened … Federer should immediately retire in his post match interview and go out on top.

It would be funny and obviously a perfect ending.

Not very likely though.

I said a couple of years ago a 20 all finish would be weirdly nice and appropriate so I guess best to just enjoy that for a couple of months!

It did happen 2 years ago, on CC at Wimbledon! And then the miracle was rudely cut short.

If the miracle had come to fruition, certainly many books and a movie would be made about it.

Ten years ago was a long time ago.

:-D :-D :-D :-D
Let me tell you something you dreamy boys - THE ONLY WAY FED IS GOING TO RETIRE IS IF HE CAN'T GET INTO FINAL.

There is some info from Swiss journalists that Roger is done. If he wins which is highly unlikely, he will continue playing until he drops dead.
I just hope this weak era players will continue beating him.
