Tennis TV commemorates Cincinnati 2009 tournament

Tennis TV has clearly upped its game in publishing a lot of highlights and best-of videos. Today is the turn for the M1000 Cincinnati 2009 which in its time was called The Real Slam, due to the presence of the Big 4 in the semifinals of the tournament.

To be honest, I only remembered the SF between Federer and Murray, and how much I wanted that Fed win against Andy.

I was there at the tournament. We still have videos of my family and I yucking it up behind Chris Fowler and Brad Gilbert while they were broadcasting on ESPN. That was the tournament my son got one of David Ferrer's broken rackets the TT Vendetta. Also Safin was there and after his practice session, would run off as quickly as possible so he didn't have to stay there forever signing autographs. It was a really fun event to attend.

This is fantastic, since Marat retired in 2009. You were privileged to see him play one of his last professional matches.

I remember that he got a terrible line call when he was playing against Ferrer(I think) and after that point, he stopped trying. The woman who made that call was the same one who was threatened by Serena for calling a footfault.

That woman has traveled the world; even "down under" making calls the camera has to focus on and ask "who TF?"

The 5th Major has been named, utilized, and then moved on over the years! In my day early on it was the WCT Finals Ch. in Dallas! After that the biggest tourney outside of the Majors and the YEC's was a 2 week event in FLA called The Lipton Int'l created in '85! The old, rich guy out in Palm Springs has been in constant competition and it's now thought that his Indian Wells Masters is the 5th major!

Nice. But let's not act like the purpose of this is anything less than reminding tennis fans tennis can be good and not like its current state.

Both Djokovic and Nadal's forehands seem so different from one or two years later. After AO09 I thought Nadal would start to be a dominant force on HCs, but it only started happening after 2010, and the forehand seems to have changed a lot in that time. Djokovic's racket change certainly did not help his forehand, either, very different swing from 20067-2008 and from 2011 on.

The match between Murray and Federer decided the winner, as Murray should trounce either of the other SF players also. Federer movement, especially going forward was magnificent in that tournament.

I actually think this week is very interesting and promising for tennis. The big 3 next gen are going forward in commanding fashion (maybe not Tsitsi in this last round), Hurkacz, PCB and Ruud playing great tennis and Rublev maybe finding some form. If the next gen start to clash regularly in later rounds of big tournament, their rivalries will be much more interesting, as long as they can bring their best level. It seems to be starting to happen now, but it may be too soon to tell.

Tennis still misses quite a bit from the absence of Djokovic, Nadal and Thiem, though. I don't count Fed because he has been out for most of 2020 and 2021.
