Would Osaka winning USO be a bigger deal than Djokers CYGS?

Which will be bigger in the media?

  • Djoker

  • Osaka

  • What do you have against Djoker?

  • I blame the NGBS

Sounds crazy. Probably is, however, it wouldnt surprise me if Osaka gets more coverage for winning USO.

We all know that Djokers cygs is more historic, more interesting, more valuable, and much more difficult. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of us to see.

But we are massive tennis fans. Most fans are casual fans. Social media and even the media in general will have a field day if Osaka wins. I could see the spotlight being massive on Osaka if she wins. Now, maybe this is mainly a NA thing, but I do find it odd that more non tennis fans are more in tune with Osaka and her road this year than Djokers.

Sad reality, but I guess we will see how it plays out.

Who cares what the media says? They’d try to determine the champion on their “impartial” opinions rather than on the court if we let them.

In Japan it likely would be. The rest of the world? Djokovic with the CYGS would have more headlines and attention for sure. You can see heading into the USO it's already been quite a popular topic, so once ot happens. We do understand that this wouldn't be just about Djokovic, right?

I think that coping with the reality will be my recommendation to you and some other fans on this forum, instead of creating all this usless anti Novak threads 24/7. And if you are really so concern about this I can put you at ease, Naomi is not winning US Open this year.

With the majority of the worlds media and public? Yes, almost certainly. I don't think anyone who isn't a tennis fan is going to much care about the grand slam.

Radio 5 Live in the UK (the main sports station) is doing a promo for the US Open which only mentions Osaka.

On the men's side Andy Murray is the only one playing if you went by the press.

It is a legitimate question. To think otherwise shows you are not paying attention.

Let's hope she doesn't pull any of her publicity stunts like she did last year.
Leave that at home. Just like she wisely did in Tokyo. She knows Japan does not put up with that.

Not if you were an astronomer or an astronomy enthusiast though.
And many casuals wanted to witness it, which is more or less equivalent to what would happen with a CYGS.
Agreed on the first part. Second part is not a relevant question. It is whether they did or didnt in the moment. Plus, what was the competition for it? What if the Super Bowl was on that night? Or the olympics opening ceremonies?

You probably are right, I believe Osaka is more known in the US than Djokovic and here in NZ as well, Djokovic is a name I rarely ever hear anyone mention but I have heard people mention Osaka numerous times so it would be a bigger story

I would rather know what Fed had that day for breakfast than watching some abysmal cygs. Osaka too, so exciting story her, idk why but there it is

No, I just meant many casuals probably did witness it (because they wanted to capture the historical moment) despite not being astronomy enthusiasts.
Many others did not, of course, but if there's an event in either astronomy or tennis that is likely to bring in casuals it's the Halley comet or someone going for a CYGS (especially in the latter rounds of the tournament). That's all I meant to say.

Good point.

Never before in the history of the world have humans reacted to actuality and recency as if it was everything that matters like today.
But a CYGS will stay in the record books, it's not something for today, whereas an Osaka win is a story that is completely dependent on context.
Even if Osaka winning the US Open is a bigger and more covered story than Djokovic's potential CYGS (which I seriously doubt, even in the kind of society we live in), it is no competition for the CYGS in the long run and in the history of the sport.
And that's all that really matters.

In History it’s CYGS by a mile but in world news Osaka will get more talked about due to mental health anc depression being a huge thing these days

It’d be similar. It shouldn’t be but that’s the power Osaka has. I talk to people who don’t watch the sport and they know Naomi from all the media and the Serena scandal. I mention Djokovic and of the ones that know him they just say is that the guy who did the Covid tour or the guy who got kicked out of the tournament last year. He doesn’t resonate with people like Fed and Nadal did and like Osaka and Serena do.

Osaka has become a cultural icon for the simple reason that all the on-trend crowd love the fact that she is on-trend. Djokovic is Balkan retro despite all the Lacoste gloss!

Roger's heroic comeback after two knee surgeries is the biggest deal.

Are you saying they don't like him because he's Balkan?

So do most agree that in news outside tennis and even sport Osaka will get more mentions but Djokovic will always be remembered in history while Osaka will be forgotten soon
