Tennis always needs a villain -Enter Tsitsipas!

Tennis crowds love to have someone they love to hate. The bad boy. The big mouth. The bad loser. The guy who pulls every gamesmanship trick in the book. Jimbo Connors, Nastase, McEnroe, even lesser talents like Jeff Tarango and Nick Kyrgios have enhanced their profile by taking on the role of "villain".

And for every dozen fans who'll hate the bad boy, you'll have one or two who'll love him -precisely because of his dastardly deeds.

Tennis has been getting very dull, recently, personality wise. I for one am delighted to see Tsitsipas going all out for the villain tag. Doubling down on his gamesmanship!

Actually he IS the new Roger. Federer even admitted using a toilet break to cheat at the AO over a decade ago. His worshippers just ignore or excuse his constant gamesmanship.

He was the true villain of the 21st century.

Nadal fanboy likes gamesmanship, never would have guessed.

Funny thing is, I don't remember guys who were considered "personalities" in tennis like Agassi, Ivanisevic or Safin being famous for potty breaks.

No. It's certainly sad that Tsitsipas doesn't have the showmanship of a Connors, the fire of a McEnroe or the mullet wig of an Agassi and has to rely on sitting on a toilet pan for too long. But you take what you can, these days.

Well that really shows how bad his antics are doesn’t it ? Most liked him as his game is very likeable which attracts fans but his gamesmanship is awful

He's basically taking advantage of the loophole in the system to an extent that Atp & ITF would have to reconsider some of the changes & need implementing reforms, which will ultimately hurt players with good sportsmanship who really need a bathroom break or Medical time out.

That’s exactly it. Players need medical time outs they travel around the world playing tennis at the highest level in Sun, Cold, Wind etc then have slams which is 5 sets and is gruelling. I understand bathroom breaks as in a 5 set match players obviously will need the toilet but Tsitsipas will get rules brought in that affects the whole tour in a bad way.

If you're irrelevant in a sport, then you're just a dick, a sideshow, a clown.

So outside of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, tennis has no other villains.

For some reason these toilet break news are really catching on. I was listening to public radio here in Sweden that goes out to all of the country and Tsitsipas and his toilet issues where all over the kids news segment this evening. Tsitsipas will be known to many kids here now as the tennis player with the long toilet breaks. Didn't see that one coming Stefanos!

Which is the problem. Tennis has too many villains right now and not enough heroes.

Cheers for Tsitsipas for refusing to be tennis-canceled. Instead of the ersatz villain Kyrgios, here is a guy who (at least until now) stays true to his word, no matter how you disagree with him. In an era of Big-3 hypocrisy, this is absolutely fantastic news. What's even more awesome? Medvedev being the anti-Tsitsipas. A family guy, already married, who, however, is not afraid to speak his mind, either.

So, perhaps there is a future for men's tennis after all.

Why's everyone assUming Tit's is throning and launching logs on his legally allowed convenience intermissions--He's likely changing his sweat soaked Hanes or Bjorn tidy-whities. Would u want him to do this on court?--(u don't have to answer that question). It was not that long ago that Elise Cornet was severely rebuked (not by me) for changing her top on court revealing her sports-bra! It's a double standard, women aren't allowed to change tops on court and men are. Tit's should protest this gender inequality by changing his sweat soiled undies court-side--that would show 'em! This USO is supposed to be all about diversity and openess--would like to see Osaka questioned about this at her next presser.

No comparison.. Titsipass is a bit boring, personality wise, to be in the same category of villain as Connors, Mac and Kyrgios. His tantrums are at a journeyman apprentice mug level compared to those guys. Taking a couple extra minutes in the john is not grounds for admission into the "greatest tennis villains" club. He's got work to do.

Nope. You can't look at a guy posting cute inspirational quotes on Twitter and trying to give off a clean, classy exterior facade, and claim he's fitting into the villain role.
You want a true "bad boy"? Gimme Medvedev or Shapovalov any day over Tsitsipas. Stef either cuts out the cheating and gets fully into the "baby Fed 2.0" role, or he remains an unlikeable prima donna who is anything but a badass villain.

It's all fine to post cute videos on social media, but the measure of a man is what he does when under pressure, and of late it's been very unflattering, being the gamesmanship with the toilet break or his laughable defense of them.

To your second point, I think that, by all likelihood, he will continue his metamorphosis into an unlikeable prima donna. That seems in character.

That's why I said that I was told that Meddy was the villain, not that I actually believe it.
While he's not that of a big crowd favourite, he's still resisted somehow when playing more established players like Tsitsitsi and Thiem.

No a villain is someone like Raonic who slides into the net and doesn't acknowledge it.

Tsitsipas is just taking advantage of the rules because he is a subpar player and gets found out against the best of the best.
