In/Out Device

Hi,
I read about the many problems in the forum and thought it might be useful to share my experience with you, which is after a difficult start positiv.
I bought 2 net devices and two line devices about 18months ago. Since then my son and friends and myself used the equipment in about 50 matches, most of them training matches. We do not use it for immediate line calls because other player have been disturbed by the signals and the calls were too often incorrect. During the match we use only the replay function for close calls, if both players are uncertain if the shot was in or out. This proofed to be very helpful to avoid disputes. Alex your mp4 is an example for this replay function.
To begin with we had problems with the system finding the court, but with the new software version it works very well. In general I recommend not to use automatically the newest software version but wait until the next is announce. In this way you can see which bugs he intends to remove. Alex, I believe your problems in the beginning with the new 3.0 netdevices were caused by the immature software.
We still have problems using the line devices. First it takes too much time to get them working and secondly I have until now not seen an improved accuracy.
The accuracy even without the line devices at good light conditions is high in the nineties. Although this is not sufficient for an automatic line calling it is an excellent basis for a professional match analysis with all relevant key performance indicators such as forced and unforced faults, points won at first or second service, points won on ad or deuce court, return points, or for rally ratio winner/faults, net attack direct point, average ball speed or net clearance etc. etc.. the list is really long. We wrote the match analysis based on excel 2019 with many macros and automated data import which now after one years work and a lot of testing works very well. It provides all necessary statistical data together with graphics, target setting, and you can replay any shot or sequence on a graphic or as a video. For example you select e. g. volley, stop or game points and you can watch the corresponding video sequence. We implemented also a zone model which allows a risk analysis and how in a rally a player used a chance for a net attack and if the attack was successful. My son works as a tennis trainer and plays with his team in tournament. Based on the results of the analysis he and his team have optimized their tactics successfully.
Is there anybody else who is doing a work like this?

Well the hardware is still garbage. The USB in the batter of the camera broke off the first time I use it. That battery is now useless. The same thing happened to my old device.

I upgraded to the June version and it kept shutting off after a few minutes of play. The longest session I got was about 7 minutes.

The line devices stayed on and I think worked as designed.

Visit just about any tennis club on a Saturday, and you’re likely to witness otherwise sensible adults losing their minds over line calls. Players suffer complete meltdowns as they hurl insults. Parents morph into brooding teenagers. Friends become enemies. Postmatch beers can undo some of the damage, but the shame and resentment linger for days.

More civilized times may lie ahead. French inventor Grégoire Gentil has designed a $200 GoPro-size device that can be fastened to any net post and detect whether balls are in or out with surprising accuracy. It’s called, reasonably enough, the In/Out. “I was born in Paris and raised on clay,” Gentil says. On clay, the ball leaves a mark, and he recalls many arguments over a blemish on the court. “It was the starting point of this, I would say.”

Gentil, 44, now lives in Palo Alto and built the In/Out in his living room lab. The device monitors both sides of a tennis court using a pair of cameras similar to those found in smartphones. After attaching the In/Out to the net with a plastic strap, a player pushes a button on its screen, and it scans the court to find the lines using open-source artificial intelligence software. AI also helps the device track the ball’s flight, pace, and spin. “This would not have been possible five years ago,” Gentil says.

I tried using the device, a set of two net devices v3.0 with three cams and two line call devices (a recommended setup for a match). The device needs a good light to work, and it not that accurate at all. The biggest issue is that it freezes (stops working, may be due to overheating...), or it shut down on its own. The only way to restart it is to reinsert the battery. So far I was not able to complete a single match under this device watch, and essentially give up on this toy. it works for 10 minutes and stops. The battery is a custom made, and you'd need a buy a new battery from the In/Out inventor only. The net device cannot be connected to the an external power directly, only via the battery (a very strange design decision). The line call devices are very fragile and flimsy made. The product is expensive, and very poorly supported. Essentially, the only good about this product is the idea and the design concepts. We definitely need something like that on the market, and I hope one day there will an affordable solution that works.

One of my line call device is loosing connection to the battery, something is not right with the electronics board inside of the device. One of the net devices hangs after a few minutes..., it requires a full reset (battery in/out) before it works again. I'm trying to to replace my defective devises but having a problem with the In/Out team to get the replacements - not sure what is going on with the support for this product. And yes, I cannot use this for matches, the <90% accuracy is not enough, it needs a good light, and my opponents asked me to turn it off. The remaining working net unit is used to support my serve practices, and I use it sometimes. All in all, I have the device, but the use and the actual value is limited. Again, I hope that In/Out team will replace my defective devices soon, so I can reevaluate the product.

With my set I wasn’t able to complete a single full match outdoor. I did see several obvious IN balls with the device calling it as OUT, and vice versa. The visual review on the device’s display is not always clear, the display is very small, and if it is sunny it’s very difficult to see anything on the display. Maybe the device will show better results indoor, with all 8 line calling devices paired and permanently power wired. At this point, I struggle with the In/Out team to replace two defective devices, so the quality and responsiveness of the product support is a question as well.

thx you saved me from buying a second one… thinking a pair would make it work. was not happy with the one I have, at all.

I received an In/Out net device about a month ago as a gift, no line device. qKickServe is correct stating the device freezes up for no apparent reason. Last night under lights with a temp of about 78 it shut down/locked up twice with the battery showing three bars. The device was not hot to the touch. Other issues have been it will randomly change screens away from training to set up. I have been using it primarily for serve practice, for that it's OK, but glitches are still present. The replay mode is nice but sometimes it goes to replay while serving and only becomes apparent when no response is given to a served ball. It has to be setup with the sun behind the unit, if set up under lights accuracy is still good( 90%+-). It will give you accurate ball speed, -+2mph. I checked accuracy by cross referencing my ball machine (Proton) and my radar gun with the In/Out. I haven't used it for practice game play yet. The case it comes in (8" plastic yellow tennis ball) is cute, but useless. I carry it in a small zippered nylon bag (manufacturer please take note). It's easy to set up <1 minute, it's occasionally finicky by jumping screens with no user input. Battery life is reliable for about 45 minutes. The unit should really come with a spare battery due to the short life, but they recharge relatively quick. I have had no interaction with Customer Service, so I cannot comment. If you are a patient person and understand the devices current limitations it will be an OK training aid. If you expect a state of the art pocket Hawk-Eye, you will be dissapointed. If you have a question or need a test run, just ask and I will try.

One of my “working” unit is more stable than the other. The In/Out support told me that I could try switching the screen off and use only line call mode to prevent the overheating of the unit. It kinda worked for one “working” net device I use for serve practices - great use for $750 paid for the set :).

Kudos to In/Out team for trying, but the product is green, unreliable with many design flaws, lacking important features. And I’m a guinea pig for them, not just me. Paid to them to be part if their lab :)) Everything for the game of tennis!

Well, I’m working with their support to resolve issues I have and to help their product, with little cooperation on their part. I see ways to fix the product... We need something like that good and working. It’s possible.

It's like a fake surveillance video camera - with a label - "You are watched, smile". Well, those are under $10 in dollars shops, and I paid $750. I really like your idea, though - at lease I can recover $10. The In/Out support went silence again - they might be very upset about their product too, so much efforts :( ... I understand.

Hi, I'm another one who's forked out for the promise of this device, one that it hasn't delivered on. I persuaded our club Chairman to invest, so am a wee bit mortified with the sub-par performance (as others have found, one unit just 'dies' for no apparent reason, and the Line devices are useless AFAIK see)...

Am crossing my fingers about getting some decent customer support (and new units) but not hopeful after reading the comments on here!

Practiced serves with my In/Out last night. For the first 20 minutes it was basically worthless. It would freeze, turn off and back on, started streaming, replaying serves, wouldn't register serves. No clue as to why it lost it's electronic mind. Then it regained it's sanity and started functioning correctly registering serves, plotting locations, and speed. I have no clue as to why it lost it's mind or as to how it regained it. Frustrating!!

Well, I have all these symptoms with my units. The customer support is trained or told to protect the product by all means - like your battery is not charged enough, reload the firmware… the product is green, and with a number general design flows and software bugs… frustrating - yes. A new updated firmware is under way… I hope it will address all major issues we have… It’s easy to make money on tennis edicts like us :)

I sense that they’re having difficulties with their creation… I have to say that the infrastructure around the product is well thought out, but the implementation is flimsy and cheap. The device is squeezed in a tiny box and likely gets overheated running the AI image processing. Can this be fixed? Probably not, in this form factor. The device fries the battery inside too… and there is no way to power up the net devices without a battery - a major design flaw, there are other flaws as well… they should offer their devices to us for free for testing we do :)

For those of you with In/Out devices that are barely working —if at all, here is another way to use it.

1) place the In/Out device about 1 foot inside the service line and 6 inches from the center line.

2) Practice hitting some serves.

If your serve hits the device it was definitely IN.
I’ll mark all my serve targets, I have a full set for a match - that should work, no battery required.

For several months, my version 3.0 kit lay idle in a drawer. Not only did the device work, it is not clear how, but also went out to play on the street, where it is not particularly needed.
Now we returned to closed courts and I found that several versions of updates had passed. In general, I tried it and what a miracle !!! My kit started working as it should!
All controversial issues that arose during the match were quickly resolved with the help of the device. There were all video reruns. Line devices worked well and did not lose connection with the net device.
I was very impressed and decided to turn on the "out" notification again to check if the random "calls" disappeared or not. Success again! In the training mode, with a high intensity of the game, the devices never showed a "false out".
The next test was the "match" mode and the included notification about the "out" and again, everything is more or less good. Sometimes, devices are confused with the choice of the square for the serve(the serve must be in the second square, and the device considers that in the first)
With the latest update, my devices have finally started to justify their purchase, but the problems still persist:
1. Sometimes, the device does not correctly select the square for serving in the match mode
2. If the ball flies far out of the court, the device does not see this hit. This does not affect the game in any way, but the statistics will no longer be correct
3. Hits into the net are not counted in any way in the statistics of the match.
4. Reliability .... For three sessions, I have never had both devices on the net work from the beginning of the match to the end. One of the devices either simply turned off or "hung", but in general, even one device helped to deal with controversial situations.
Output: the latest updates have really improved the performance of the device. Problems remained, but in general, the device copes with its work.

I confirm that I have all four issues with my set with 2021-08-08 firmware. I tried to work with the support team and they said I have reload the firmware from an SD card - I've done this; the issues persist. On the 4th issue (the reliability), in my case, when one device goes down - nothing works. Also, adding 5th issue, those sessions when the set worked (serve training) were not fully saved; no good stats captured (maybe I'm not using the set correctly). I tried to use the set with my matches, but due to issue #4, my opponents asked me to remove the devices from the court, so we could focus on the game instead of addressing issues with the devices. There will be a new release 2021-09-09 (ETA 09/09/2021 as per the support team). I hope the vendor will be able to address all issues, meantime my set is idle in a drawer.

I try to look for the positive. I got my 3.0 kit almost as soon as it went on sale and since then, the developers have taken a big step forward. I am glad that the developer does not abandon his invention and continues to develop it. This gives hope that it will get better with every new update. There are problems, but already now, the device copes with its main task ... it helps to resolve controversial moments during the match

On the same boat - purchased v3 on release. I hope it’s a software issue, if not - no hope, regardless how positive we can be… There is a strong indication of devices being overheated on a hot day - this one a hard to fix. The positive - we need something like that on the market, and we can play and practice tennis without it :)

The problem with overheating, the software can only partially solve. I think this is the problem that we will have to live with.
While playing outside, I did not use the devices precisely because of the constant overheating. They can't stand the heat at all.
During the last match, one of the net devices "froze" precisely because of overheating. This is strange, because both devices worked in the "line call + rec" mode. One worked from start to finish, and the second "stuck" after 40 minutes of recording

qKickServe

I can confirm the overheating issue exactly as you described. I have one net device that does no like the heat, and it also does not the SD card. I opened a ticket with the support asking them to replace the device, but they do not believe me :) and saying I have to relaod the firmware... and I did that - the issue persists. Rumors are that 2021-09-09 will fix this, it will a Fall weather and not to hot :) Also, 2021-09-09 should address line call+rec mode which is not working well - fingers crossed - we need this toy to work, and be used.

... I have some good ideas on how to fix their design - keeping the software the same, but completely redesigning the net devices, but it will be version v4 if they except my help :)

One good thing about Winter (is) Coming! ;) Gets blinking freezing here in the UK outside (and in University bubble courts) so am hoping that'll fix the over-heating issue, at least temporarily...

During the last game, both net devices worked without problems. From the beginning to the end of the match they worked without failures, freezes and shutdowns. It turned out to be a cool game with many interesting ball rallies . I wanted to make a video cut, but surprise-surprise .... problems with synchronization started))) The game session is not synchronized with the "cloud", and the video recordings are "damaged" and cannot be played :cautious:.
I contacted technical support, the answer was gorgeous ... It "should" work. :-D

Well, I only confirm the issue You have, and the support answer is not surprising :) - it should work for the money paid.

Let’s wait for 2021-09-09 firmware on 9/9/2021. If the issues persist I’ll give the devices to my kid - he loves disassembling stuff and see what inside, maybe I’ll take a pick too.

Today, in power user mode, found setting"net fault". I have onlu one question... Why does it not turn on automatically, but it is necessary to specifically look for this setting? For statistics, this is a very important indicator and I don’t understand why it is not enabled by default. I would like to try, but to be honest, it's scary))) Knowing the specifics of the operation of this device, I'm afraid that it will explode if you turn on this setting))))

Anyone using the October Firmware release? Any issues fixed?
I have not noticed any changes.
By default, on a device of version 3.0, the third camera mode is enabled, to fix the hit in the grid. In the last update, this feature was in beta test and when it was turned on, the devices did not start working correctly.
With this update, devices keep getting out of sync. The last 2 matches, the devices worked separately from each other. Today I will try to disable this feature.
Otherwise, everything is as before. Some of the blows of the device are "not noticed". Even if the devices are synchronized, then each of them can see the ball hit in different ways (one device shows "in", and the other "out")

I tried to download and update to one of my Net devices, it said it had worked but screen showed old firmware. Now it won't boot up at all, just gets to loading screen with a clicking noise occasionally (stuck fan?)...(n)

Gonna try for a refund/replacement... so frustrating! All the elements are there for a good product, just wish (like many others have already iterated) that a big company with decent customer service and money behind it would pick it up... ATM it reminds me of all those 'swing analyzer' devices (that went on butt of racquet) that gradually died out through lack of support.

Maybe we should get a class action suit going against the company LOL

Hi all,

It seems i am not the only one having problems with the net devices.. What a pitty.. I have sent so many emails to Support team and no one answers.. Terrible!
I was wondering if you can help since i am trying alone with the two net devices i purchased.
1. What are the steps you follow when you change from a mode to another? I mean once you choose the mode you go back to first screen, choose line call again, pass from the calibration screen and proceed ? The reason i am asking is because when we start with a mode like training and choose areas and then change to a new mode like game the device seems to continue to operate from one side and not both. Are we using it wrong when we change mode?
2. We have made a fixed installation. Every time we close the device and then open it again we have to make a new calibration?
3.One of the two devices works much worse than the other . I have updated the firmware many times with no luck. The self check status in power mode seems ok but still it is like cameras are not working!

I'm afraid it's just a toy (and a broken one at that, in many cases such as mine) ... An expensive one too, for the small amount of plastic and "engineering" involved! Certainly no money was spent on testing, quality assurance or customer service :cautious:(n)
