The Yanks desperately want to have Gauff as the only "Wonderkid" of women's tennis and are rattled that her thunder has been well and truly stolen by two non-Americans. Gauff is now just a tennage tennis player who hasn't made it past the quarter finals of a Grand Salm yet. Her time as the new wonder of women's tennis is well and truly over.
Geez if leylah or Emma win this slam, it wouldn’t look good for coco although on the other hand it could be good for her as she’d no longer be the teenage phenom

Feel like Pliskova is going to mention an injury or sickness of some sort bc that was exceptionally flat and dull even for her standards.
Well, she didn't. Just that she didn't play well and Maria did. While disappointed with this loss Pliskova still seemed fairly satisfied with how things have gone recently (so maybe that is the problem - no killer instinct).

Coco is still 17 years old! She is not 18 for another 10 months? so she has a chance to match or exceed theses 18/19 year olds progress! I agree that the U.S. tennis commentator are a walking PR promotional campaign in hyping Gauff at every possible way and at every time they possible can on the air! If Gauff is loosing they blame she is still young and if she wins, she is an outstanding tennis star. I just wonder if she does win a GS, if she stays the same person as before or ends up like Naomi is now?

I didn’t mean to downplay guaff’s achievements but she’s been hyped as the next big thing in tennis by the media for over 3 years now and two girls just came out of nowhere without much time on tour and if they win it’d be weird

I don't dislike Coco Gauff - I dislike the HYPE that the media does every single tournament, they fawn all over her when she hasn't earned it yet. It irks me when instead of showing an important men's match they stop everything to cover Gauff's matches, which they have done on numerous occasions on Tennis Channel and ESPN.

I couldn’t stand her being put on CC for every match at Wimbledon this year over former champions and much higher ranked players

Fixed that for you. :)

I think it’s going to be Sabalenka vs Sakkari with Sabalenka winning it but I’ve been wrong in almost every WTA match the last couple rounds so who knows lol

Yeah, seems like these "girl wonder" stars keep coming and going in WTA like waves in the ocean. Sloane, Kenin, Guaff, et. al. and probably now Osaka, too. It's too early to tell about Fernandez, but she's so lightly built, she'd be hard pressed to fight all the big names to the top and stay there. Sakkari is pretty consistent, though, and is built almost like another Serena. She might make it. Just 26, too.

"Done nothing all year" doesn't even apply to Raducanu. She only played her first WTA match ever in June so you can't even use lack of a record as proof of lack of ability for her.
she was playing in ITA events. that is minor leagues of wta

not sure if these girls are real or flash in the pan. they done nothing all year long and all of sudden this. i think they are flash in the pan
I mean ostapenko had a similar run leyla is having right now winning close matches one after the other while Emma is having a run similar to Iga last year. So hype them at your own peril.

I did say "success" and "tennis history", not just winning Slams in the recent past.
Broadly speaking, tennis has a very long tradition of teens having tremendous success.
Especially on the WTA tour. Austin, Seles, Hingis, Capriarti, Williams sisters, they all were teens when they had their first big success.

She made the 4th rd of Wimbledon and then retired. There is thus something about her that doesn't make this US Open run a total surprise.

they are too small to be multi slam winners. they have no power

I keep on imagining the four remaining women holding the winners trophy and each of them makes me smile! I am going to be happy no matter what!!!! This is a nice yet strange feeling, since I am usually rooting for one player over another.

It's a fool's errand to try to judge a professional career solely on the basis of their pre-professional career. How many top ranked juniors have failed to become great pros and how many unsung juniors have become great pros?

First of all this is a thread about WTA players.
It matters not if you look at all measures of success (slams+).
Please give me your long list of teens who had tremendous success ScentOfDefeat,
to prove that it is such a tradition?

She's an arrogant diva already, like she already won 20 GS.

They don’t love you like that, Sabalenka, you’re just mocking the crowd (and Fernandez) with those frustrated calls for cheers.

Ah man that's so sad. They're my favourite doubles team at the mo (narrowly ahead of Dolehide/Sanders). Hope she recovers. What a wretched time for it. Thought they could win the whole thing

Just saw a quick replay... not 100% sure, but she was at the net, and it looked like she tried changing directions and maybe rolled her ankle badly? She was lying motionless by the net as the rally continued for like another 4-5 strokes.

I had forgotten that my vote in the poll was for "other player"!!! I was one of the 14 on this poll who got it right!

To me it looked quite usual ankle spray, she'll be fit to play in two weeks or so, I believe. (Not any expert in this kind of things... my somewhat severe ankle spray totally healed in tow weeks as a teenager.)
But really sad the match ended this way. It was good, even, high intensity match. And I learned to very much appreciate Stefani in the Olympics and their bronze was well earned.

Cool women’s doubles final tomorrow. Youngsters vs veterans. And I don’t know who to root for. On the one hand I’m a fan of McNelly, on the other hand I wish Stosur could get as mach double Slams as she can before her retirement.

Which Grand Slam did Sam Stosur win years ago? I was thinking she was due to retire any day now, she's been around for a very long time.
