Emma - has got to be the very definition of a marketing dream come true. Beautiful, intelligent, well spoken and a champion. Pretty good combination ;)

Oh, horrors, yes. The media and marketing apes must be drooling uncontrollably. I hope they don't ruin her with their ugliness and harassment. I hope she has some responsible adult nearby that can help and guide her in coping with the inevitable avalanche of attention and money, that's headed towards her like a runaway locomotive.

Whatever, dude. I don't hate anyone, so please do not characterize me as such. SWs conduct is well documented. BTW; the "tired out mother" jokes are an Evert reference- no one else. We're done here. Well played to Emma, looking forward to Indian Wells. Won't even bother with the men's final.
The joke comes from Serena's argument with the umpire. I want to assume you've seen the match, but you're making it hard to assume. The mockeries flooded Youtube and newsgroups within hours.

Emma just seem to be much more Mateur for her age. She acts like she's 25 years old. :)

There's a reason for that, and it's something else about Emma people should know. She went to an ultra-elite "grammar" school in England - it's free, but only to students who pass extremely, extremely rigorous academic testing. These kids are the cream of the cream, the ones that go through school making not straight A's, but straight 100's. The kind that graduate with double majors from MIT Summa Cum Laude. Say what you want, but Emma is absolutely NOT just another semi-literate bubblehead pro tennis player. Intellectually, she could eat anybody in that stadium for breakfast. She's still a kid, yes, but you get the point. It'll be interesting to watch her in the coming months and years...

No, it doesn't. Evert constantly makes references- to this day- that SW has a kid, and that's used as an excuse for poor play. I'm done here.

More nonsense. She's damn near 40 years old and, yes, she does have a kid. There's not a thing to joke about here. Her current performance is all but expected. Be about your day.

I doubt your praise lines up with marketing reality, aside from her now being a majors winner.

speaking as someone who works in a leadership position at a large agency, I think you will be proven very wrong. Endorsements were already being lined up well before today. Her parents are smart and not desperate for money, I believe she will be managed intelligently and not over exposed/exploited.

I think she should start at Stanford, she would be perfect for next 4 years there at the farm.

So finally a literate tennis player with high IQ.

Watching the re-broadcast of the match right now on Tennis Channel. It's 5-4 Radacanu is leading in the first set. So she must break in the 10th game of this set. I am really looking forward to re-watching that amazing run of 4 games in a row right after Emma was broken in the second set. It's fun to re-watch because I am not concerned about the outcome of the match. It was such a great one, one of the best ever imo. Even though the score was 6-4, 6-3 the match was suspenseful and exciting!

She's a little bit more than goofy. I don't mean it in a rude way. But her behaviour on court is not just silly, it's kind of almost bratty. She not a kid. She's young, but she's not an idiot and she seemed very clear-of-mind when arguing her "case" during the MTO.

Also, after the Kerber match when Angie went across the net to give her a hug she didn't seem overly warm or gratified at the gesture. Like she almost didn't care either way. Whatever, I'm still waiting to see. Some bits here and there just put me off about her. The incident with her reaction to the mto was unfortunate. Even after the officials would have explained to her the situation, she did not seem to be willing to accept it and continued to argue her side.

I just hope she doesn't turn into an Ostapenko, or Kenin, or Andreescu.
Her 360 degrees fist pumps are so cringe. In my country of origin they mean “up yours” and could get one severely hurt.

They said on Tennis Channel that Serena Williams did not lose a set at the USO in 2014. Iga Swiatek didn't lose a set at the 2020 French Open. Not sure if there any other recent women's tournaments with zero sets lost.

Congrats to Emma. She totally deserved it.

While I am heartbroken for Leylah'd loss, her post match presscon kind of gave me closure. She clearly knows she just needs to keep putting in the work and work harder. This may have just made her want it more. Sometimes, losses are an important part of a tennis pro's career. Looking forward to see more of you, Leylah.

Ugh, her dad works in the finance industry! Do not know in what capacity? Maybe Investment Banker or regular stock broker?

A lot of you have pointed out tho that Emma does really well academically in school. I wonder if that will be an asset or a liability. Greatness sometimes takes one just to be all-in on something but if you're also anchored and splitting yourself on another path, that might be a bad thing? I'm all for a good education for sure but we know it takes a bit of obsession to be great and I wonder if that's gonna pull her back. I guess only time will tell.

You should try being in a house full of them

Everything you say gets forensically dissected
Your choice of music films books too

you lounge around in bed and they are up with the rowing team, running half marathons and doing charity work

They get 99% in the grammar school entrance exam, losing a mark as the results are weighted by age.

They are 2 out of 8000 people who apply for a scholarship and get accepted , but turn it down.
You can’t even hold down a job at McDonalds and they have work placements with McClaren F1.

They are National Spelling Bee finalists, where you make an even bigger fool of yourself thinking the compères are Ant and Dec when it is Dick and Dom.
How was I supposed to know?

Gap year is playing with the Norwegian national orchestra, you are still on the recorder.

Their girl friends come round and look at you as if you are a pet dog.

parents wonder how you turned out so badly

they will all be turning their attention to tennis now making me look rubbish at that too.
It ain’t easy believe me

If the reference to the past legends and all in her presentation speech is any indication, she wants tennis greatness. I sure hope she does. Even post tax, she should have what $1.5 mn? More than enough to bet on tennis and not hedge your bets between that and education. Chinese mother...hmmm, hopefully she and Emma's dad will both support her going fulltime into tennis and not pressurise her to 'concentrate on studies'. She can always go back and get a college degree later...if she needs one. If she wins five or more slams plus decent endorsement earnings, she won't.

It always an advantage to be smart and if you are educated, one will go further in any career or endeavor!

I re-watched the match last night on Tennis Channel - it truly was one of the greatest finals I have ever seen! Tenacious Leylah vs Fierce Emma! Despite the scoreline the match was always close and Leylah could have made a comeback but Emma held her nerves.

5 - 10 majors? That's a wild overestimation of her skills at this point.
I would say it's way to early to say. Could be a wild overestimation, perhaps even most likely is. I don't think we've seen enough to make long term predictions on Emma. But what I have seen, she's got soooooo much going for her that 5+ slams wouldn't surprise me.

With the endorsement earnings coming her way now, I think she can flop at tennis (she won't) and still be set for life. Anyhow, I sense she's going for greatness too. Not a one slam wonder at all.

She's managed by Max Eisenbud, the IMG super agent who previously managed Li Na & Sharapova. She's on her way to making mega millions in endorsement money.

Another little data point that came up in Emma's presser: Wimbledon came right after her school exams. She had only 3 weeks to practice and prepare.

I hope the "star" life doesn't ruin her. Being 18 years old and suddenly having tens of millions of dollars, being on magazine covers, no public privacy, constant security and bodyguards, etc. etc. This success comes at the cost of any chance of a remotely normal life. Good luck, Emma.

I wish Osaka would be fading into her permanent retirement enjoying her tremendous fortune so that the curse would be automatically broken.

She is not retiring, so it must suck to base so much hate on a dream that's not coming true.

Her meltdowns where she threatened the linesman, and the thing with Osaka are 100% on her. She's the one on the court. Period. Whatever, she had a great run but she's history, and her behavior is as much a part of her legacy as her titles.

The only people talking about "behavior are the same people who hated her since the start of her career, and it never had a damn thing to do with "behavior". She is legend who transcended the sport, unlike the objects of certain stalker-like "fans" who only watch women's tennis to fantasize about a stereotyped girly image/personality they will never encounter (and such a woman would run in the opposite direction if they faced "fans" like those i've described).

Poor 1st serves and that big mistake not being able hit the wide open court at the net which gave the break to the opponent hurt Leylah, otherwise this would be a 3 setter. Emma had the better nerves which surprised many.

You don't see too many 6-4, 6-3 two hour matches. Was high quality all around, Fernandez just had that lull in the middle of the 2nd set that did her in and ultimately her 1st serve % was the real issue. I think she got herself too worked up over the medical instead of just staying relaxed and it affected her, but hopefully she'll learn from it. I do think her smiling at some points, and after the medical, was a bit weird.
I think her coach told her to smile so she doesn't get so worked up and emotional. Her emotions showed after the loss and I did see a little diva in her wanting the attention of the NY crowd. But hey, she's young and its understandable. We saw some promising young talent (men and women) in this years US Open; ladies finals and Holger Rune, Botic van de Zandschulp, and Brooksby.

I can't find a youtube or other highlight video that shows Leylah's reaction to Emma's MTO. Anybody got a pointer?

Well , not all of us can be put in the same bucket. I never hated her (Serena or Osaka?) from the beginning and not now. But I do dislike any player's diva attitude (bad behavior) or just being mean.
Her, Djokovic, Osaka and sometimes Fed was a jerk.
Questions are asked by the press, man up and answer. No matter how it comes out. Like AI did. "We're talking about practice man, not a game.. practice" . I respect him a lot because he is all real. No fake attitude or personality. When that question was asked he had just learned of a death of a close friend or family member.

Anyway, Osaka is hypocritical doing all these commercials with people catering to her and acting respectful on the court when she wins. She does the Japanese bow when greeting her opponent at the net, etc. But once she faces adversity and loses she throws a little kids fit. Lose with respect and dignity. Serena needed to do that too and she has later in her career. Even Venus knew her sister was a sore loser and I remember she didn't play matches well against her sister. Many think it was it intentional. This whining attitude and blame is so blatant in western culture but much more with women. Fans don't like it. So we don't like the whiners no matter where they are from. Gauff has earned more fans and respect than Serena at her age because she is mature when winning and losing. Serena gets tough questions because she is a GOAT. She should have turned tough questions back on the press and joked with them. Muhammad Ali did that well. It's not about race, it is attitude & respect.
