I was wrong about Emma.

Few saw the potential in Emma's talent, skills, ability to prepare for tournaments and remember everything quickly and of course for her amazing intelligence.
She had a panic attack at R4 W21 she could not repel. Anyone to make as huge improvement of a mind as she did in such a short time is almost impossible and hard to believe, along with obvious improvements in many elements of her game.

Bolded part combined with outstanding work ethic is what makes her similar to Djokovic and why almost all analogies and comparisons stated already in this thread do not and almost surely will not apply.

She is not a one major wonder. This is the beginning of WTA's superior mind at work. Hard to predict number of majors but she will not become a prey of social media and modeling of any kind. As she gains some more experience she will recognize she should take and start taking notes from Djokovic. Booknark this.

Lucky DNA draw providing superior intelligence is not enough. This young woman knows it, as she so elegantly already demonstrated at a very young age for such a crucial directive in her future life.

And also I am pretty sure she will have her college degree once she decides she had enough of what this game can give to her mind.

Amazing. Super excited to witness her doing it in years to come.

EMMA RADUCANU is empowerment.

That was clay.
Yeah, this was on hard court. This is the surface the entire tour is most comfortable on (with possible exceptions like Iga herself). We can say Emma didn't get a tough draw but she wasn't supposed to destroy Rogers, Bencic or Sakkari either. Every match a straight setter. That's not a fluke. It's still possible she will never win one again. Azarenka looked super solid when she won AO 2012 and I wouldn't have thought then that her only other slam would be another AO title. But this wasn't because she promptly slumped. She just kept losing tough matches to Serena or Sharapova deep in the slam draws and eventually ran out of opportunities to add to her slam tally. Doesn't mean her slams were flukey. Nor is Emma's.

Yes Iga was consistent throughout the year and is in the top 8 but her game has fizzled out a bit. She doesn’t play with confidence the way she did last year’s RG. She hesitates to go for her shots and plays defensive a lot and her serve has been horrible.
Way too soon to write off Iga. Even Serena had a lean patch after her first slam. And she wasn't playing badly. Things just didn't work out for a while at the slams. Until she started winning again and this time by bucketloads. We don't know how many Iga will win but it's way too soon to conclude she is not capable of adding to her slam tally or that she will only be a one slam wonder.

I’m not writing her off. She’s way too good and way too athletic to be a one time spark. But it’s a fact that she’s lacking the confidence she had in that 2020 RG. I’m saying it could happen to Emma as well. Even Novak struggled after his 08 AO win. It’s difficult to back up your slam immediately especially when you win at such a young age.

Yes...so which does not establish that having a bad 'sophomore' year means one is bound to be a one slam wonder.

Yeah it’s not but excluding these youngsters, the established players aren’t doing great. Barty had no business losing to Shelby from 5-2 up in the third set despite coming off a great run with titles at WB and Cincinnati. Pliskova lost horribly against sakkari. Emma is a great player but it’s not a lie that her run is greatly aided by the inconsistent tour who can’t string a good couple of tournaments or matches together.

If nobody ever lost matches they were supposed to win, we wouldn't have upsets ever in tennis. As for Sakkari, she already made a semi earlier this year at RG so it's not like Pliskova losing to her was a big upset.

For once I’d like to see at least 5/8 seeds reaching the quarters. I’m not saying nobody should lose, I’m saying every top ranked player shouldn’t lose. Then the rankings don’t matter at all, I like to look at the draw and think “oh this match could be interesting” and not “this could be interesting but they probably won’t get there”.
It’s not the pliskova lost to sakkari, it wasn’t a good match and she lost horribly considering she was in good form.

Well, in that case, Bencic was the 11th seed. And Emma still beat her in straights anyway. And this was a Bencic winning 70% of first serves in, hitting 19 winners to 21 UEs. She played a good match. You can't handwave every match as an inferior test of Emma's skills. It didn't pan out that way at all. Why, Fernandez herself played really well in the final. How often does a two set match on the WTA last nearly 2 hours? If someone passes every test, you just have to say well played. It really doesn't matter what Emma will do from hereon. It cannot take away from what she achieved nor is it somehow a bad reflection of the tour just because she was a qualifier. Ivanisevic was a wildcard when he finally won his one and only slam. So what if he had pedigree? He was not at all expected on form to be even contending for the title.

As I’ve already said I’m not saying Emma didn’t deserve the title or anything or she’s not a good player. All I’m saying is wta top players are way too inconsistent and I prefer it otherwise. If you don’t agree it’s fine.

This, exactly. It reminded me of 2004 USO when McEnroe was raving about Fed's movement, saying he is so smooth he moves like water. Especially Emma's movement into her forehand corner to hit the DTL is beautiful. Just a few smooth big steps and stays nicely planted when she hits. If you would compare with Leylah hitting the same shot, her legs are much closer together and she is 'braking' to be able to hit the shot. This also forces her to get much closer to the ball and buggy whip it whereas Emma is in position to hit a full blooded flat forehand DTL (which was the most devastating shot in the women's tournament this USO).
Yes. And I'm reluctant to type this out loud (two different tours, and not projecting that type of success, of course) but Emma's smooth movement is a bit Fed-like, yet in her return of serve and ability to plant and hit the backhand DTL, a bit like Novak.
Scary how good she could become when you consider her improvement between July & September this year! in both ball striking & strength of character.
What was wrong with her character?!

There was speculation about how she went out of the tournament at Wimbledon, panic attack was diagnosis, but who knows.

That was what way too many people, pros inclusive, read into wrongly. Just imagine that you are an 18 year old girl who knows well she has the talent and skill to win the GS in front of her home crowd and that she has got the chance, in a wild card, that has been given to her graciously by her tennis association. You just came out of your last high school exams that you had worked so hard for (Emma did). Not really knowing that you should have been conditioned better than you have, you surprisingly end up in the round of 16 in which you naturally get emotional as you feel the pressure from your home audience as well as the lack of physical fitness that was THE REASON for the loss. This is so easy to understand but so many have overlooked or just ignored. Emma has not really improved since the Wimbledon 4th round loss; she has just had time to prepare as her exams are long gone and high school diploma is in her pocket. Watch out for Emma Raducanu at Australian Open!

an 18 year old girl in front of a lot of home people to show how strong she when she has not had time to prepare to be strong ;)

I tried reading up on the write up of that withdrawal from Wimbledon and no medical explanation was provided. It sounded eerily similar to Mardy Fish's account of his anxiety. Go watch his Untold netflix episode. Some pretty scary stuff. Not to be a party pooper but I guess it helped Emma was a qualifier this US Open so minimal pressure. The pressure just gets higher here on out. Let's see how she deals it with it.

On top of that, she appears to me to have an A type (overachieving) personality based on her interviews holding herself to high standards and trying to be perfect in all things. I'm all too familiar with these kids esp with the mom with the Chinese background. They usually don't handle adversity quite well. I hope I'm wrong tho.

The mom's clearly handling that "adversity" well at home as her husband is a Romanian and seemingly very well on day to day basis. But I know what you're saying and that some cultures are so unadjustable and fragile when expected to be functioning independently. I do not think Emma's a weak individual at all as she's apparently attached to her grandmother in Romania and her British friends aside her mom's ancestry which is why she's grown strong and open and which is why she's used to handle all sorts of issues well. This girl has been continuously underestimated and that's why I believe she has raised to those occasions every time.

Maybe I should've left out the race thing totally. I just really meant overachieving kids in general seeking to be perfect and please "Tiger" parents. I'm not saying she is, it's just an observation.
