What will Federer's career actually look like when he comes back from knee surgery?

This will be his 3rd or 4th knee surgery I believe? He came back from injury in 2017 and won 2 slams that year. His recent injury comeback wasn't too successful this year though. Do you think he will have a comeback similar to 2017 or will he end up similar to Andy Murray, where he struggles to make it past the 2nd or 3rd round of slams now? Also when is he even returning? No one appears to have any clue on that.

He'll come back, play some abbreviated season and retire at Laver cup or Basel. Or maybe play doubles for 1-2 years.

Let’s keep it realistic. It’s not a superhero comic. This is a guy who has been playing tennis for 35 years and has had four knee surgeries.

I see his next return exactly the same as his 2021 return. Slow start in challenger/500 tournaments with the goal of being "in shape" for Wimbledon.

I'm hoping for better results if the crowd is there, if there are no hesitations with the knee, considering the surgery was not botched and if he plays with less/no expectations that he did for 2021.

Its honestly pretty amazing he made the QF this year in the bad prep/form he had and honestly his draw was not easy either. If he's in better form next year and gets a lucky draw you never know what might happen.

Yes but it's another extra year added to his age. Those don't help. Every year passing by now has major impact on his stamina, physique, etc...

I could see him winning a ATP finals maybe. If it's a low bouncing surface, fast moving. He would need to stay top 8 all year though.

A slam will be hard to win if it's anything like the last year, having to retire early out of tournaments.

Age's impact is not always linear though. It usually happens in leaps and bounds, like when you have an injury or surgery and never recover to the level you were at before.

I don't think we've yet got to see how close Roger can return to his 2019ish level if he can remain healthy long enough to get match fit. If last year's edition is a harbinger of the future grass competition, I'd wager ~80% of Roger's 2019 form would be enough to contend at Wimby.

He clearly has the game to win Slams, still.

If he can recover 2019 movement and stamina then there's no reason he can't have similar results.

He played quite well in French open tbh. Otherwise his level was sh1TTty everywhere

2017 was insane and Idk if there's anyone who thinks it's probable that Federer can repeat that now. Other scenarios are difficult to predict with how little information we have about his physical condition, but Roger's attitude from the recent interview gives strong "making a comeback" vibes, and with Roger it probably means aiming higher than getting wildcards and losing early. He will be focused on a very limited number of tournaments though.

He may do some damage at Wimbledon. Last year he forced the comeback. This time it seems like he is being smarter.

he has only himself to blame for that horrendous choke 2 years ago......it would have been 21-20-19......2 slam difference would have proved massive gap now for novak with the youngsters finally getting hold of his neck......

He's going to win 3 matches out of 6 played, claim to the press his body is OK, then announce a fifth knee surgery 3 weeks later.

Fraud is still capable of some decent stuff (by current standards) but I think this year shows that there's no way he has the stamina to string together multiple quality matches in a row.

The same posters who think he will be good enough to win Slams after his comeback are the same ones who post that he didn’t win Slam matches much in the last decade against Djokovic (and Nadal on clay) because he was too old and his prime ended by 2010. Very puzzling:unsure:
