Trying to classify the Laver Cup. What is it really?

What type of event is the Laver Cup, or with which we could assimilate it to?

Is the Laver Cup an exhibition or not? If not, what is the tournament category it should be assimilated to:

(*): Just in case, sorry if the emphasis of the question offends you.

It's supposed to be tennis' version of the Ryder Cup. Rather more important than an exhibition.

I just love the event

Unique format, great courts, ideal for the crowd as well as television , team emotions , what is not to like about it ?

Above all it is respect for Laver, Borg and McEnroe
I wish the courts were a bit faster but other than that it’s a great atmosphere. The crowd there is more into it than at regular non-slam tour events.

I like Laver Cup for the staged tight matches, the fake drama, the fake player reactions. I like that almost all of the matches finish in 3 sets. It's a pure entertainment and great fun, something different from the regular tour that's for sure.
The point is that it looks and feels - fake. Fake team spirit is the worst...

Fake? Perhaps. While the Laver Cup is an exbo, I don't believe it's a typical one where players are paid by "non tennis" entities specifically to entertain a selected clientele, and by extension the public as an afterthought. For example, the Kygrios (sp?) Federer match from a few years ago I believe was an authetic effort on both players to win. It seems to me that the up and comers know this is a great opportunity to play the top players that they may not otherwise get to do so in a typical tournament. The top players get to test their mettle against the popular at the moment up and comers to give the crowd the matchups they would love to see. Now, some players most likely take it more seriously than others, not realizing the long term effect of not being asked back by Fed and the organizers. How big of a deal is that? I suppose it depends on the personality of each player. Federer and the top players have so much clout within tennis circles that positive praise from them could lead to great opportunities outside of the existing tournament structure. Some will see this and play accordingly. Some will see this, not care, and play accordingly (ie for their own reasons and thus may be great or mediocre play, I suppose). Some will see only the short term, surface level benefits and play accordingly.

With the event being named the Laver Cup, I think it typifies Federer's love of tennis and genuine respect for it's history and subsequent humility to it. I've always sensed that it's Federer's hope to simply get great tennis, and concurrent entertainment value for the crowd, sharing a passion he has with hopefully like minded players and people.
(y) Nice post. I am enjoying it. Loved the Rublev/Schwartzman match.

It's the ATP's idea of trying to take away from Davis Cup! The ITF and ATP have been at war for as long as I can remember and each have done things to hurt themselves and the game! I didn't think it could get worse with dueling YEC's back in the 90's (GS CUP a joke)! After all the whinging about long seasons, Federer of all people created this glorified exhibition called the Laver Cup! I've watched a few points here and there, but I can't take it seriously! The ATP Cup was interesting last year when Novak led Serbia to the Cup, but the dynamics were different with Nadal and Med challenging Novak at the end! :sneaky: :giggle::notworthy:
Atp cup is boring as hell....Laver cup is exciting.

Yeah I’m sure the organizers sat down and said lets stage team Europe leading team World 11-1 after day two.

Ryder Cup has been around for over 40 years. Who knows if Laver Cup will last that long but they get people to show up and the crowds are into it. I’ve been watching the Ryder Cup this week as well and so far it’s been quite boring. The European team is completely out of sorts, playing like crap. The score after a day and a half is 9 - 3 USA leading. And team USA usually performs best in the Sunday singles so this could be a complete blowout. At least the Laver Cup matches yesterday were competitive and a couple could have gone either way.
Well, I'm sure it'll be around at least as long as Roger is. Likely post-playing he'll only put more effort into it, not less. If people keep attending, and it keeps making money then every reason to assume it'll flourish, and someone will pick it up when he's gone. The key, I guess, is that people need to care about the players involved to at least some degree. I don't suppose the old folks can sustain it all that long.

I'll say 500 based on top player participation trying maybe half the time. 250s generally speaking are going to have a lot less talent. Exhibition due to format maybe but the atmosphere and players are there.

It is not an exhibition. It is like Olympics & Davis Cup, where the matches count on each player's record, but no ranking points are awarded.
But it is not an ITF event, it is an ATP event. Obviously a different playing format from Olympics or Davis Cup, or any other tournament.

Eligibility is that 3 players (used to be 4 prior to 2019 or 2021, unsure) are the top ranked players eligible for each team.
Of course, the player also has to accept to play. This year, Djokovic declined, but #2 Medvedev, #3 Tsitsipas, #4 Zverev, accepted for Team Europe. [6]Nadal, [8]Thiem, [9]Federer are all injured. So, #5, Rublev was Captain Borg's 1st extra choice (he can chose 3 of any European players), #7 Berrettini, was his second choice, and #10 Ruud was third choice. So Borg chose strictly by ranking. Of course, nobody can say they didn't deserve to be there from Team Europe. Team World was a little different. The top 3 were top rankings based, #11, 12, and 15, Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov, and Schwartzman are the top ranked World players and they all accepted. Team World Captain McEnroe's choices where #19 Opelka, #22 Isner and #95 Kyrgios. Kyrgios is the only player that looks out of place based on rankings, but he has put in some great performances in past Laver Cups, and is a crowd favorite, and McEnroe likes him, also for his doubles play. I'm not sure if #17 Garin and #21 De Minaur were available to play, but Twin Towers Opelka and Isner were obvious choices for McEnroe. I believe Feliciano Lopez, and Jack Sock were chosen as alternates by the respective captains.

So it is kind of like the end of year Tour Finals (Masters Cup), in terms of eligibility, the top players are selected, but with additions by team captains.
With 4 matches played each day, the scoring format is design to reduce the possibility of dead rubbers, but they are still possible on the last day as we saw this year if one team absolutely dominates the early results. 4 Points (1/match) are available day 1, 8 (2/match) on day 2, and 12 (3/match) on day 3. Team World was 11-1 behind, and needed to win all matches on day 3 to win. After losing the 1st, it was over - 14-1.

All players get a base amount of money for playing, but the winning team's players get much more, so there is much more at stake than Olympics or Davis Cup, and probably another reason why intensity is so high, besides players wanting to win for their team.

Sure, Team World might benefit from having Russia added to their side. World countries don't have the top ranked players as they used to more than 20-30 years ago.
Maybe EU vs the World? Eh, it might be too political. ;)

A cheap knockoff of the Ryder Cup. If it was meant to be serious and a real important tournament, they’d consider Russia part of Team World. Then maybe things would be interesting

So would a Russian golfer not get to play in the Ryder Cup? Anyway many of the Laver Cup matches were interesting. There were several that team World could/should have won. It was closer than the scoreline indicates.

I don't know why people are so desperate to bring it down by constantly reminding us of the fact that it's an exho. Most fans here do know that it is an exho but enjoy it for what it is nevertheless. The bigger problem lies in the imbalance of the teams.

I do not think that anybody doubts the quality of the matches, most were quite fierce and good. I think it is the whole 'team spirit' thing, when we all know some of them do not stand each other and were quite vocal in critisizing each other (i.e. Zverev/Tsistipas). It all looks staged to me. Someone mentioned Davis cup and compared the two - the difference is that in Davis cup they play for their countries, so patriotic effect comes in. In the Laver cup?
