I don't know how many of you got to see the International Tennis Hall of Fame Inductions Ceremony this weekend. I was surprised to see how emotional Sampras was. For a guy who was often criticized for not showing enough emotion on the court, Pete was overcome with emotion. He was clearly overwhelmed by the moment. I usually cry a little during these induction ceremonies but I think Pete did enough crying for everybody. Look for the video on You Tube. I was surprised to see how good Arantxa Sanchez Vicario looked. I never found her very attractive when she was an active player but I thought she looked pretty good.

Sampras cried during the US Open retirement ceremony as well. It seems he & Fed have something else in common, they sure do cry a lot compared to the other great players of the open era. Nothing wrong with that, but I get embarassed for them sometimes, especially since tennis doesn't exactly have a 'tough guy' image to begin with.

Just goes to show how much work and sacrifice (by the family too) must go into producing such a usually stoic champion. Pete's the son of immigrants - there's no question his emotions are 100% motivated by thoughts of his parents' efforts to give him opportunities, etc., and nothing he himself did to get there. Great, honest scene. Anyway, ultimate tennis cry had to be Fed after his first Wimbledon win in 2003.

or after Fed won the '06 Australian. or '02 Hamburg. or '04 Wimbledon. I can't recall one slam he won where he didn't sob uncontrollably after winning. Between him & Sampras they are the GOATs of crying. Borg was the true iceman in comparison.

Samp's speech was a bit uncomfortable to watch, I can understand getting emotional once, but the guy started crying every other minute- got composed, started crying, got composed, started crying. its like he was having a nervous breakdown or something. even the crowd seemed to lose patience at some point. I'm sure he's very embarassed today, some sports radio guys(or howard stern) may replay it more than Elway or Dick Vermeil's sob-fests. especially when he starts snorting when trying to hold back the tears.

Maybe the players - more than many fans on the internet - get a feeling for tennis history, when their career is over. Now, Sampras was always a bit of a traditionalist, as taught by his early mentor Pete Fischer. And he was never a showman, as Agassi was for parts of his career. And he had never that ego that Becker or Mac or others had. But when they get to the status of hall of famers, all players begin to understand, that are are only part of the game, never greater than the game itself. There is a intersting dialectic at work: When they are elevated to long-term memory, they lose their god-like persona. Sampras was indeed only a tennis player, but what you can say more about a player.

I haven't the whole speech yet, just shows how much it means to him - it's great.

Talking about things they have in common, don't forget Federer cried after beating Sampras!!

I watched the Hall of Fame ceremony on the Tennis Channel and Sampras did get very emotional through out his speech. Im surprised Sampras didnt cry after losing to Federer at the 2001 Wimbledon.

I think both Sampras and Federer are introverts that like to keep most of their emotions bottled up inside most of the time, but certain rare moments can trigger their emotions and break that wall and then the floodgates open and all of their long bottled up emotions come pouring out all at the same time. I know I'm that way myself.

It's also the thoughts of all the hard work and sacrifices that enabled them to be where they're standing at that moment in time. Just like when Marion Bartoli's father broke down during Marion's speech at the Wimbedon awards ceremony. I would've done the same thing. In fact, even I had tears in my eyes and I don't even know them.

That's a very different emotion, more like you're pissed off that you didn't win. That's why you don't see Federer cry when he loses, only when he wins. Those are tears of joy.

I remember when Sampras beat Rafter in 2000 to break the record, I was crying myself. It was such a dramatic match and such a dramatic ending in the near darkness and all the flashing lights from the cameras around the stadium and a rare Wimbledon crowd really making it a special ocassion with their more raucous behaviour. It was fabolous!

Pete will cry alot if Federer surpasses 14,LOL.J/K.Its kind of weird in a way, this guy hardly showed any emotion out there.The only time was when he played Courier.

lol its understandable that great player wont show emotion on the court, because its part of game. If Sampras wont show any emotion while getting into Hall of Fame that would be pretty awkward, and everyone would be pretty pissed because that would mean that he didn't give a fk.

I was watching Federer's speech at this year's Wimbledon final just waiting for him to break down. Every time his voice wavered I cringed, but surprisingly he kept it together. You won't hear Agassi cry when he talks about his career because he's already let it all out and he has no regrets.

When his wife got inducted Agassi broke down completely! So let's wait and see shall we.

I am a Nadal fan, so while we are at can someone ensure me Nadal has already done enough to warrant the hall of fame, even if he were to be injured and never play again. Thanks. I believe he has, but it would feel good to hear it from someone else.

well how would feel thinking when you were just a young boy you were just playing just to play and had no idea that one day you'd be #1 in the world, pull out 14 grand slam titles, and be one day looked upon as a legend in the eyes of the hall of fame. i don't know about you but i'd be crying too

I think roger is more emotional than pete. Almost after every grand slam he wins he falls down and cries like its his first one, while pete almost never got emotional except when he broke the record.

Pete's a father of two now so that usually makes guys a bit more sensitive. In addition, his parents were in attendance at his induction and it seems like they rarely made it out to his tournaments when he was playing competitively so that may have added to the emotion as well.

It may be embarrassing at times, but I thought the speech was really genuine and truly spoken from his heart. Bravo Pete!!

Okay, how many times has Sampras cried following Slam wins compared to Federer?
Federer: 5, maybe 6 times? More? (and it was out-and-out blubbing, too)
Sampras: Once. (a few tears in 2000).

Also, how many times has Sampras fallen over on the court like he'd been shot after winning a slam?
NONE.

Nothing against agassi or crying, but since you brought it up how abaout agassi crying like a baby when he won the french?

Slightly off topic, but in 6 days sampras is coming to st louis to play against the st louis aces. i have back stage tickets or whtaeve ryou wnat to call them. and i will be getting a picture with pete. pretty cool. ill post it later on.

i dont know if its all act or partially serious or 100% serious when people fall down like that. I dont think i would act like that. I think they believe that the fans expect it.

Ask him why he thinks he can beat Roger Federer in 2007 when he could only beat Lleyton Hewitt twice in 7 straight matches on grass or hardcourt between 2000-02.

Right, which is why I said that he has already let it all out, so he's done with the crying. He can reminisce about his career with a smile on his face. Sampras bottled it up and it just chokes him up to think about how he's not a tennis player anymore.

tennis is an extreme emotional sport.... most guys cant handle it.... with all the physical tools, without the strength of mind... a pro would be useless..

(michael chang used to say his brother carl would always beat him in practice, but when it came to actual matches, carl did not have the emotional strength to cut it in the pros... he could not win in real matches)

when these players cry after matches.... can you imagine the emotional toll these guys go through for 4, 5, 6 hours at a constant beat/rate....i dont think many of us can....

sampras and fed are two of the strongest emotional and physical people one can hope to meet
