Karatsev signs with Hydrogen

That's cool for him. I was in contact with his agent for propose him a apparel sponsorship during Roland Garros last year with my own brand.
But Hydrogen has more money, my brand is too young, so that's life
Anyway, I think Hydrogen's look is not really made for Karatsev. He's more "classical", and he deserve outfits little less flashy in my opinion. FILA or Mizuno would be better for him.

New companies are venturing into tennis recently. Yoxoi with Bublik but they just stopped with Sandgren. Penguin with Tomljanovic. Hugo Boss with Berrettini. Uomo Sport with Brooksby.

Some other recent companies have went belly up or gave up on tennis. Athletic DNA, Australian, Prince. Boris Becker brand.

I find the skull ridiculous

I always get confused and think it’s Skullcandy, the brand that makes Bluetooth speakers and headphones for teenagers.

Looks really uncanny and weird on a tennis outfit. But to be fair the white and blue stuff hasn’t been too bad at all for the Animal. You can’t dress a ferocious man like that in kids outfits.

Australian L'Alpina is on. Boris Becker was actually Volkl. Prince is on.

This guy's muted personality (combined with epic tennis game) is just endlessly entertaining to me. It's almost hilarious he has to now wear Hydrogen outfits as it's so not him. Except maybe the skull.

Totally agree with that. It's not pejorative on my part, but he lacks charisma, and the major brands are above all looking for charismatic players. That's a fact.

who was the first pioneer, which player and company? had to be a first to take that risk I presume.
I’m going to bet it actually started with the public at large just wearing different clothes to play tennis. And gradually companies started to realize there was a market for more individuality when it came to tennis clothes customization.

It's like Agassi and Baghdatis created a real life 'avatar', but had no creation points leftover for personality.

As for Asics shoes, not sure if he's sponsored but a Yonex rep told me that a lot of pros wearing Asics shoes (not the whole kit) pay out of pocket for the shoes because the players like them the best and it's worth it to them. (this was like 5 years ago in IW)

There was no solo standard bearer in breaking with the all-white traditions but it happened during the advent of open era in the late 60s. I have seen video of Arthur Ashe wearing a solid light yellow polo when he attempted to defend his USO’68 title. I’m not sure how many other pros changed that soon; the final between Laver and Roche was still all-white.

Hey, I resemble that remark! :):-D
For the record no Hydrogen clothing (and not much money to burn) although some of the recent purple/black caught my eye - oh to be young again...

Hydrogen founder/designer Alberto Breschi is an interesting character, having gotten into the fashion business almost by accident when he got the “bug” while studying economics in London and noticing the mix-and-match wardrobe parts many people there would wear, a big contrast to what he was used to seeing while growing up in Italy.

Brand identity and the use of element #1 as his brand name was fueled (pun very much intended) by existing Italian casual wear brand Diesel and Gas. Breschi preferred the cleaner, lighter gaseous element as his symbol.

Once he became immersed in fashion design in Milan, Breschi became a pioneer in co-branding marketing strategies with some large corporations like Fiat, Superga and Lamborghini. A current co-branding project matches Hydrogen with Prince racquets, bags and grips.

Active sportswear for golf and then tennis was a later offshoot from his luxury apparel concepts he continues to design and market today. As an example, suit jackets sell for $400 and up on the Hydrogen website.

Brescia has also explained the symbolism of the skull logo, having borrowed it from Mexican rituals practiced celebrating the Day of the dead. The skull supposedly acts as a talisman in favor of love, life and good luck. Those are all elements Breschi attempts to promote with his gear. Hydrogen…so light but so vital for life to survive.

I really wonder who are the people buying Hydrogen clothing?
How do they stay in business?
At my club, it is the younger guys who have a lot of tattoos that wear Hydrogen. They are typically weightlifters also who look like they take steroids and I don’t know if Hydrogen has a niche with that crowd.

Some in other threads have insinuated the Hydrogen shoes are Vapor 9/9.5 but wow they're ugly.

The shorts...maybe that's a practical joke since Karatsev is Russian and he'd be wearing what sort of looks like the American flag.

Karatsev’s kit today was in sharp contrast to the hideous bumblebee onesie he sported this summer. Simple black shorts, white shirt with one sleeve all black from the shoulder down.

There is hope yet.
