Just going on the record to say Medvedev was poorly treated by the Australian Open final crowd.

Little or no cheering for anything positive Daniil did. Cheering (or jeering) Daniil's errors or faults. General poor sportsmanship from the crowd and I fully understand and agree with Daniil's post match press conference statements.

Daniil, I am a fan. I support you. I appreciate watching you play and your heart for the game and your honest personality, rough edges and all. Tennis needs you. Fans need you. You are the future of tennis. You've earned it. Keep playing and you will see all the good you have worked hard for will come to you. I continue to be your fan and I wish you and your family all the best.

So?

You EARN crowd support. Danil hasn’t earned shiit, instead he dig a hole with his antics.

And Danil - while being a great player no doubt, perhaps Murray level even - is NOT the future of tennis. He’s been at his peak for nearly 2 years now and he’s still losing to mid-30s Djoker/Rafa.

Glad you started a new thread and went on record regarding this subject, rather than contributing to the other threads. I think I speak for most of us who were waiting for you to go on record.

The entirety of Australia has embarrassed itself in 2022. The people, the politicians, the fans, etc.

You, I'm sure, must be like one of those movie characters that never say anything wrong, always has the best comeback and your teeth sparkle when you smile.

The idea of having one universal "peak level" as if the players are characters in a video game has always struck me as problematic (these players don't exist in vacuums; there are so many factors that go into whether a player has a good match against a certain other player). Having written that, I think it's clear that Medvedev is still improving and if he can learn to attack a bit more effectively and at the right time, that, along, with an improved net game could see him winning a match like the one he lost. I think that mentally he will become a bit tougher.

Also, Medvedev beat Djokovic in straight sets at the US Open in decisive fashion last year.

it is quite common in sports.
IF this match is played in Russia, what will happen?
dont be silly
what shall be done if the crowd likes particular player? in 2017 final, majority preferred fed, so what?

the crowd may not behave in a good manner but med's reaction and words of idiot do not sound right as well.

I just wonder about next year. This year can be put down to Kyrgios, pent up virus emotion and a final where one guy was chasing history.

Is the AO going to go full yobbo?

Agree. I have generally been a fan of his antics, but it appears that he never quite knew where the line was.

He crossed it at this AO, and seemed suprised when the fans en masse didnt want to support him after seeing his verbal abuse of the chair umpires, camera operators etc etc.

He was definitely mistreated (no excuse for booing between serves) but his reaction at the AO is the first time I have seen him show everyone how much he can let a crowd affect him. I always thought he enjoyed playing the heel, but the mask slipped big time over the last fortnight and opponents would have noticed that for sure.

The most interesting thing to me is that he does seem to still have a filter, as evidenced by his scripted press conference afterwards and attempt to curry favour with the journalists at his presser ("I really like talking with you guys.... " :-D)

What was this about?
In Cincinnati they have a camera literally sitting at the back of the court, and because Medvedev likes to play all the way back there against the wall he ran into it in the middle of a rally and hurt his wrist.

Thanks!

Winners are grinners!
Losers can please themselves!

Not that Medvedev should be complaining too much. He is the current reigning US Open Champion. And he is going to win a lot more Major Titles over the next few years. With his playing style, he is pretty much a shoe-in to win at least one AO Title and probably more to boot. And he shouldn't worry too much about the Aussie crowd. We all love a winner down here. And the minute he wins one, he will be embraced by a lot of the fans.

This AO Tournament was a little different. With no Federer here, Nadal basically becomes the Federer proxy for the fans. No one else is going to garner as much spectator admiration from the Aussie crowd apart from Nadal, except perhaps for Tsitsipas who has the entire Melbourne Greek contingent supporting him.

I was at the Fed/Nadal final here in 2017.

Rafa copped similar treatment as the crowd was so pro-Fed.

It's not that Med is hated, it's just the Rafa is loved. It happens.

Just FYI ... In Australia, the word "Ass" means "Donkey".

Last time I checked, outside of Africa and China, most of the donkeys lived in Eastern Europe in places like Serbia.

(If you did actually mean to say that Australia does have donkeys. Well, yes, there are a few of them around here, but mostly of the two legged variety, and they tend to frequent sports like Australian Rules Football and Soccer more than they do tennis.)

I agree

He did nothing in the final to deserve boos etc.

I agree.

Helping Rafa to Major Title #21 and a Dual Career Grand Slam was worthy of cheering rather than booing.

Medvedev will be forever admired by true fans of Tennis in Australia for facilitating Nadal's elevation to #2 in the GOAT list!

Medvedev let the crowd know it was 'low IQ', screamed at an umpire, told the umpire he was stupid and used a euphemism to call him a pus-y and also told another player he was incredibly lucky and boring just at this tournament alone. He took delight in needling the crowd by saying he looked to Novak for inspiration quite deliberately.

As I mentioned when he did these things, he was only going to lose fans for this and it would be on him 110%.

And that's exactly what has happened. I used to like the guy to some extent even though his conflicted nature was clear from the beginning. I gave him the benefit of the doubt several times. But let's be honest; his accusation that a black umpire and black player were colluding 'because black', yawning in another player's face, poor treatment of ball kids and general sh-t stirring...these things all add up.

Now, Medvedev would rather live in a fantasy Cold War drama in his own head than own up to his own actions. I think this latest sob story is absolutely pathetic. Some of the weakest nonsense I've ever heard especially coming from him.

Exactly. He embraces this behavior then complains when it comes back to bite him.

Not the same thing—that crowd was pro-Federer like every crowd, but they cheered onRafito as well and didn’t boo him between serves.

Nah, Medvedev blew Nov..ax off the court not too long ago in front of a more hostile crowd at Flushing Meadow.

Yeah. But Rafa wasn't winding up the crowd during Press Conferences and on the court. And I don't recall Rafa talking too much to the Umpires during that tournament either.

Federer's popularity in Australia is HUGE! Especially among the tennis playing fraternity, many of who do frequent the Open. Rafa is widely admired here too. But he is not viewed as a player in the "traditional" sense. And that does count for a lot to many Australian fans of the sport, given the history of tennis in Australia.

Look at Barty. She has been embraced as much for her clean cut, no fuss image, as she has for her great tennis skills.
