When many 'non-revenue' college athletics are at risk of being dropped, why not take a moment to acknowledge the tennis programs added during these difficult times?

Your negativity is showing. Props to any schools adding and keeping tennis programs at this time. I just saw a press release where a large DI school slashed all salaries. While that's obviously tough for those impacted, they get to keep their jobs and all programs are still in tact.

No negativity here. I can't wait to see them beating Power 5 schools in the near future.

Power-5 D1 schools not only furlough and slash salaries, they also include layoff in the athletic departments. My beloved Ohio State University permanently eliminates 25 full-time athletics positions, in addition to slashing salaries and furloughs. I just donated 10K to OSU since I am doing well financially during covid-19 (my investment in both Tesla and Amazon stocks are doing so well for the past two years, and they sky rocket since the start of covid-19). I hope things will get better for OSU soon.

It appears you might be a fan of Power 5 tennis. That's great! There is exceptional tennis played at that level.

However, Power 5 teams represent less than 6% of the total number of college tennis teams.]
I like this quote from Amanda Carroll in her 'Why College Sports?' article.

"Throughout the country, there are three main organizations that give student athletes the opportunity to pursue a career in collegiate sports. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each serves a different purpose and gives student athletes the ability to receive an education while continuing to participate in the sport they love. Although there are many criticisms of collegiate athletics organizations, the benefits of participating in collegiate sports put student athletes in a position to succeed no matter which path they decide to choose."

Why not celebrate the success of college tennis at all levels?

I went back and dug into the article I previously glanced over, full disclosure, I mostly looked at the headline. The university I am referencing that slashed salaries also furloughed some employees as well. Again all programs are still in tact. Sad times indeed.

I knew the athletics program was self sustaining. I'll see if i can find the other 20 schools that are self sustaining.

Dillard University will add both men's and women's tennis teams. Dillard University is in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

I see that Converse College (Spartanburg, SC) got six commitments from male tennis players. Converse has only been coed at the graduate level, and female-only at the undergrad level, so the college must be going coeducational at the undergrad level starting this fall, and starting up a men's tennis team. NCAA Division II, Conference Carolina.

UMass Dartmouth Reinstates Women’s Tennis & Other Sports --> Release

Due to changing demographics within the UMass Dartmouth student population and given the current collegiate sports environment, the University has revisited its July 2020 decision to discontinue eight of the University’s 25 intercollegiate athletic programs – women’s equestrian, men’s golf, men’s lacrosse, co-ed sailing, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s tennis.

Northeast Mississippi Community College Reinstates Men’s & Women’s Tennis Programs --> Release

Northeast is reinstating its men’s and women’s tennis programs following a four-year layoff. The Lady Tigers and Tigers will officially return to head-to-head competition during the upcoming 2021-22 academic year.

College Tennis Programs Bearing the Brunt of Budget Cuts

Why has college tennis been cut more than any other sport? And how is the ITA supporting programs and student athletes?

Seventeen Division I programs have been slashed, making tennis the most affected sport by cuts. That number rises to 59 when looking at newly lost programs at all levels including NAIA and junior colleges. Most tennis cuts have happened at member schools of mid-major conferences. But even the Big Ten’s University of Iowa offloaded men’s tennis from their athletics arsenal.

Adding back a few will not help the future of college tennis.

Thanks for sharing the Sep 1, 2020 article. This forum message thread was started after the article you referenced and notes the start of 17 tennis programs during a challenging time for all college sports.

The schools that added the 17 tennis programs must have a healthy optimism for the future of college tennis. I'd suggest that even moderate growth in the number of tennis programs since September 2020 is a positive sign.

Also, someone that Stanford can schedule so they don't have to travel far. That's their main concern in scheduling, apparently.

you must be new here, which is absolutely fine, but there’s a few thousand post history between me and a few (mostly one, but he used to have a compadre) rabid Stanford fans that underlies the tone of my Stanford posts, and I have a Duke elite eight game to watch rather than go into that tonight
