Djokovic = "Nole"(Nickname) why?

How did this name come to be?

The only reference I could find was that he wrote "Vamos" & "Nole" on his shoes during the SF at the French vs. Nadal, in what appeared to be mockery.

Does anyone have more information?

Rymes with A-Hole, but he changes the "A" for a "N", because of his name, Nolan. Basilcally, it means he's an ass.

It's his name in short. Novak = Nole.

what? that is like saying Bob is short for Bill

Well, I know it sounds weird to you. I don't know how to explain this better, it's a language thing. This shorts are common in countries of ex-Yugoslavia (Serbia, Croatia...).

It is similar to Ljubo, which is Ljubicic's surname in short.

Nole is a shorter and sweeter version of NOVAK.. its like you are patronizing to Novak.. I'm from Serbia..My name is Bojan (boyan) and if you do the same thing with my name it would be "BOKI"(bokee)

NOLE is pronounced no(short o)lle nolle (short e also)

ANd for that guy who said NOle is an ass..YOu must be having an IQ of my current posts number 23 so if you come and read this post again in a year or two maybe your IQ will be enough to live a post here

This thread is two years old and most of these haters are not posting here any more or changed nicknames, as far as I can tell.

I don't know why people keep bringing back several years old threads like this?

The people asking aren't stupid, they simply aren't familiar with Serbian or Slavic names. And if you never seen or hear Nole you'd think it does sound like Mole or whatever. I googled the name because I never heard of the shortened name before either and curious why they would call him that. Actually Novak is not really that long anyway, five letters? So that is strange that they would further cut it by a whopping 1 letter. If I was non-American and heard someone call someone else Dick I would be somewhat confused too, makes little sense, but people are used to it they think EVERYone just knows. I rather call Novak -Novak not this Nole thing. Commentators on tv call him Novak, are they stupid too? I'm from a slavic country actually and have a shortened version of my (much longer) name but I would never expect anyone to know it.

Not quite... Nole has two syllabes, so not technically shorter than Novak. Unless it's pronounced Nol...?

He's Serbian not American. In Serbia the nickname for Novak is Nole.

The nickname for Mihail as in Youzhny is Misha.

Dimitri Tursonov's nickname is Dima

For Azeranka it's Vika

Learn to think outside the box

What's a Nole anyway, is it like a Mole? The nickname Djoker is much better. Have only heard the "Nole" nickname in articles and blogs, haven't heard commentators or other players such as Roger or Rafa call him that.

Because Nole is what seems to be an affectionate nickname he's had for a long time and something his family call him.

Djoker is a nickname given by pundits and fans.

It hardly seems like his family are going to call him Djoker does it?

Yeah, because Andy and Joey aren't the exact same number of syllables as the longer version. And it's pronounced No-lay

I believe it's a childhood nickname his parents gave him.
