PS3 Questions

Hey there,

So I'm starting to lean towards the PS3 (especially now that Topspin 3 is supposed to be released on the PS3 now!), and I was wondering about these 2 things:

-if anyone knows what the good games are that are out, and that will come out in the near future.
-Is the online community any good as in are there a lot of people that go online? Online gaming is a huge thing for me, so is the online service good for the PS3? I'm especially looking at sports games from EA (i.e. Madden, NBA Live), or other shooters such as Resistance, etc.
-Have you had any technical issues with your PS3? I don't want it crashing on me, which is why I ask.

PS3 is the worst of the three systems in my opinion. Right now the only decent game out is Resistance Fall of Man, and it's nothing compared to Gears of War, Bio Shock, and soon Halo 3. There are only two games that are worthwhile that teh PS3 has that the 360 doesn't and both aren't out. Plus it's too damn expensive. Online with 360 is also better, Xbox Live is teh best of the online communities. Just my opinion, but the PS3 is too expensive, and waaaaay overrated, I would rather have a Wii.

Don't buy a game system unless there is actually a game released on it that you want. Topspin 3 is coming to XBox 360 and it definately has a better online system than PS3.

The 360 wins, I think. I have a Wii, and I like it, but it's not for hardcore gaming.

360 has Xbox Live, Gears of War, BioShock, Halo...
Wii has Zelda, and hopefully soon Super Smash Bros...
PS3 has...rumors of a new Ninja Gaiden? Oh, and don't forget about the lawsuit that was/is being pushed on Playstation over the patent infringement of one of the hardware components. All PS3s may have to be destroyed, if I remember right...but do your own research.

EDIT: Just realized you can buy BOTH a 360 AND a Wii for only a little more than a single PS3.

Freedom the reason I want a Wii, is cause Super Smash Bros. That is going to be a great game. I still play the old one, it is so much fun. The new NInja Gaiden will be on 360 also gauranteed. I loved the first Ninja Gaiden.

see, I'm not really sure if the 360 is the clear cut choice for online gaming. Sure, Xbox Live is the best service, but the PS3 has FREE online gaming, so I won't have to waste money on that, and more importantly, less laggy games. I've heard the 360 is pretty laggy, but so far the PS3 has little if any lag at all. Also, the game selection looks pretty decent. The games Resistance, Madden, Warhawk look awesome, there are more exlusives coming out like Lair, Killzone, Heavenly Sword that also look really cool, and best yet, all the old PS2 games still work. So that means I can get Gods of War and stuff as well. Plus, the 360 dies so much, and I've always hated microsoft as a company.

I'm really surprised that no sony fanboy has appeared yet.

i'm waiting a year, maybe more until i get a ps3. they generally iron out the flaws in the console within this time plus the good games will be out by then... your metal gear solids, final fantasys etc. plus the games out atm are only using something like 20% of the ps3's total abilities.

Where the hell did you come up with 20% lol? Yeah metal gear solid, and resident evil 5 will be pretty amazing.

You forgot Heavenly sword and GT5 Prologue. If the OP wants a ps3 right now, the only good games I would buy for it is GRAW2, Resistance, Motorstorm(which comes pack in on the 80gig ps3) and thats about it really.

Keep in mind the 360 had a huge jump timewise on the PS3. The PS3 has better hardware as well as a blu ray drive which you can't underestimate. The PS2 was a huge factor in the success of DVD in Japan and it might prove to be the (hopefully) largest nail in the HD DVD coffin.

Metal Gear Solid 4 looks incredible as does spore. 99 nights, heavenly sword (basically god of war with a chick) and there are a few great looking shooter games lined up too. Sony learned their lesson from xbox live and I think the PS3 will certainly surpass the 360 in the year to come.

I don't. Wanna know why? Halo 3 is releasing in about 3 weeks. That means that roughly 99% of Xbox Live players are going to have Halo 3 continuously loaded in their 360s for the next year or so. The only way for Sony to beat the 360 is to release a game that's better than Halo (which there isn't yet), into an online community that's better than Xbox Live (also non existent), which means having more PS3s in circulation than 360s...and guess what? PS3 has fewer units in homes than Wii. Sony will certainly try to boost up their online multiplayer capabilities, but are they going to beat Halo? Not a chance.

A new Halo could be a completely crappy game and it would be referred to as the best game ever. I am not saying they do that because Bungie has done great work and their attention to detail is inspiring. Is Halo a killer app (meaning a game that makes you buy the system)? For some, yes. Not for me though. I like GOW more, but even still I don't like the low speed of that game and general feel from that game. Being a PC gamer primarily I respect a powerful system when I see one. A new MGS, Final Fantasy, and a God of War-ish game would probably be enough to make me buy a PS3. I went PS2 last time because it was the clear choice, but I do admit that I have been wrong before. I had high hopes for the Dreamcast but the system never really took off like I had hoped. The emulation scene is great with it and there are some fantastic games even still.

Like any gamer would (well should) tell you: it's about the games. I give the 360 the edge for the moment but I think it's going to tip really really quickly for Sony. The wii will always be around because old people can play it and it's fun to show it on the news about how it's curing obesity or something. Sony won't have to put out a new system as quickly as Microsoft will in all likelihood because of the difference in the hardware.

Keep saying that the PS3 will never surpass the 360...go ahead! Just wait it out a little, I'm telling you :D

weren't they supposed to learn that lesson after the first halo came out?

They've just released the numbers this week and the ps3 has outsold the 360 from the time it was released against the same time the 360 has been out on the market.

I know... can't wait for November when it comes out. Its a good quarter for the 360 right now coz we have Bioshock, Halo 3, COD4, Half-life 2, PG4, Assasin's Creed and Mass Effect. I tell you its sweet to have a 360 right now.

99% is a bit of an exaggeration don't you think. There's still a WHOLE lot of players out there not just in the US where they despise Halo 3. Plus playing Halo online you will experience the most racist haters out there also with Gears of War.

I'm not a Sony fan boy but in the longevity of the PS3 on the market (around 5-6 years or so) it will outsell the 360, that's a 100% sure. I mean cmon the PS2s are still selling my the thousands everyday. And now sony is releasing a white ps2 very soon.

I think my comments came across sounding very anti-PS3-ish. I think it's a very cool piece of hardware, but I don't believe it can match up with the 360 in terms of mass appeal. People line up to buy the games, not only the system. Fedfan4life just listed 7 games and said "I tell you its sweet to have a 360 right now."

Will the PS3 eventually start turning out impressive titles? Yes. But you've got to know that Microsoft isn't just going to stop developing games after Halo 3 drops. They're going to improve their games as well. I do expect the PS3 to sell more once good games start coming out for it, but I also expect many more 360s to move in the next month.

That's cool dude, we all write bias comments sometimes :). If you wanna make a quick 100% profit is buy that legendary edition of Halo 3 (with the helmet) then sell it on the bay. I can assure you the price will double.

OK, so my back and forth wavering between the two systems has switched again. Now I'm seriously looking at getting a 360. The thing I realized now is that I don't really want to get a PS3, because if the blu-ray fails, then you've effectively wasted a ton of money buying something that can't even be used anymore. Lets face it, the PS3 wouldn't have been this expensive if it didn't have Blu-Ray, and as far as power, in Madden, the 360 version is supposed to look a lot better than the PS3 version, so I don't know if its worth risking $500 on pure potential alone. And if HD does lose out to Blu-ray, I'm pretty sure microsoft will put in a blu-ray add on eventually.

So I have a new dilemma: should I get the Elite or the premium with HD version. I currently don't have the HD programming to watch TV in HD (btw, do you need the programming to be able to see your games in HD, or do you just need the outputs and not the HD programming to view your stuff in HD), so although I have a 32" LCD, I'm not sure depending on whether you need the programming if HD will be a big deal for me right away. However, I would like the thing to potentially have the ability to play stuff in HD if/when we do get the stuff. This is why I'm wondering if its worth just going for the elite version. I hear you have to buy an additional component with the premium version, and if I'm getting a significantly bigger HD for a bit more, and a sexy black finish, then why not spend a bit more?

Here are my questions about the elite though:
1. This is what is most important to me. I've heard that the new premium version with HD has had significantly better results than previous 360s in terms of reliability, so does anyone know if they've made the same improvements with the elite as they did for the premium version?

2. For downloading stuff to the hard drive from Xbox Live (especially game demos) what stuff is generally free and what isn't? I'm mostly looking at demos, but are trailers and other things generally free?

3. How expensive is Xbox live if you buy the full year deal? Why is Xbox Live considered to be worth so much money? What makes it so special over a free service from Sony that you have to pay so much money for it?

About the BD add on... I doubt that. Microsoft is a very proprietary company. Since you have a LCD HDTV I suggest buying the 360 Pro for $350 because it has HDMI. Its no use to buy the Elite unless your going to rent alot of movies on Xbox live which to me is useless. Just spend that extra $100 on games and buy the one year xbox live gold service.

for your questions:

1. I've read that its basically the same 360 but with a HDMI output which is better than component since HDMI is digital and component is analog. If your buying one don't let the retailer upsell you into buying a one-year warranty with them because microsoft just extended their warranty for 3 years.

2. Game demos are always free and xbox live arcade has free game trials. Movie trailers and and some TV show episodes ("pilot" episodes) are free as well. Sometimes they would release an old movie (recently was Austin Powers) for free if its sponsored by companies like mcdonalds and such.

3. One year xbox live with no add-ons cost about 50 bucks with an extra month free. If your want to buy the service with the xbox live camera it would cost you 90 bucks but it comes with 2 live arcade games like UNO and robotron along with 400 microsoft point ($5). If you like retro arcade games, this september their offering 50% all xbox live arcades.

One thing that most addicting about the 360 is the Achievement points. Hope this helps you.

Supposedly better hardware. In all the sports games that are released on both systems, the 360 versions look better every time. I'm sorry, the PS3 is way sweet, but just look at the 360 lineup, the games make the systems. I think teh PS3 might be a better system, but it is hard to make games for, and the 360 just has all the good games.

Gears of War, Mass Effect, Assasin's Creed, Halo 3(huggest game ever), Bioshock, Borderlands.....It juts goes on.

Correct, Xbox Live is way above the online play of other consoles right now.

But the 360 does have a lot of problems. I love my 360 because of the games, the Live, the price, except it breaks down so much. Apparently 40% of all Xbox 360's break down and are sent back in. My 360 has broken down twice, three times already? Luckily they reimbursed my check and increased the warranty to like 3 years.

I guess I'm in the minority that never plays console games online? I prefer having friends over and playing that way, strange I know.

If I were to get any system right now it would probably be the Wii, which is absolutely obliterating the other two in terms of sales. Most of my friends aren't too into games, AKA they like guitar hero:lol:, so I can see us all playing the Wii.

On the 360 vs. PS3 debate, I'd choose the PS3, as I already stated online gaming isn't a factor for me, and the majority of my friends had to send their 360s in for repair at least once:-| The PS3 has some pretty good exclusive games coming out, and compared to the 360 exclusives, I find the PS3 games more my style.

An average lifespan for a game system is 4-6 years. $50 a year for XBL will run an extra $200 - 300.
My PS3 is a compliment to my HDTV. Blu-Ray is standard with the PS3. A seperate HD-DVD player will run for $170 before tax. I also got the 5 Blu-Ray movie rebate but the XB360 had one of those for their player too.
The PS3 doesn't use a regular processing unit. It was specifically made for the PS3 by Sony-Toshiba and another company. The developers are having problems porting but when that is settled, games will be flowing in.
Warhawk is a complete online experience. No single player. $60 and it comes with a BT headset. Air and ground combat. I still need to get it.
I don't like my things breaking down. MS has done a lot to compensate for their defective hardware, but I don't like the hassle of sending things in and having someone home to pick up the package. PS3 is built like a tank.
With all the coverage of how the Xbox 360s are failing left and right in the past few months, there hasn't been much coverage of how sturdy the PS3 is. PS3 Vault took a PS3 into harsh environments, continuously using it for 108 hours with various games and Blu-ray movies. Their findings? The PS3 is pretty much indestructible.

The guys did three tests, one at room temperature, one down at 0 degrees F (below zero), and one at 120F. Besides slight condensation on the cord in the cold and a burning smell in the heat, the PS3 actually held up perfectly fine. It went back to a working environment and plays just like normal. PS3 doesn't offer nearly enough over the 360 to warrant a second glance, unless you are a die hard fanatic of some exclusive series.

360's do have the failing issue, but a free repair vs. a poorer gaming experience? I don't think it's even worth considering the RROD in your decision.

And it wont for a long time, the game coming out of that system horrible games covered up in a good looking skin(maria sharapova anyone?). Not to mention it is so insanely expensive. By the way my 360 has not broken down once, and neither have any of my friends, but they do have some problems. How does your opinion make it not a good game? Seeing as all these people love it, and it gets 10s in every review, it's a bad game because you say so? I can understan going against the crowd, but jesus how can you deny the millions of people that play it?

EDIT: Lakoste, I dislike fanboys also, but I am super super hyped for Halo 3, pardon my excitement.

Nah, I like popular games, I just don't like Halo 3. You seem to have a problem with that since you like quoting my posts and mentioning some random fact how Halo 3 is going to have the most pre-orders ever, or how it is the greatest game of all time (strong words for a game that went gold a couple days ago). Just seems a tad fanboy-ish, especially when I didn't even mention Halo 3 in my original post.

It fascinates me how you think it is impossible for someone to not like Halo 3. It is called an opinion, and we are each entitled to our own. I never said it was a bad game, I just said that I liked PS3's exclusives more, is that so horrible?

I'll stick with Halo1/Goldeneye for my multiplayer console gaming until something I like comes out.

I wasn't even referring to halo 3. I was refferring to WOW, which you call a bad game. Which it obviously isn't, there's a difference between saying you don't like it and that it's a bad game. You're trying to make me seem like a typical fanboy, because I am arguing against 'your system'. I like both, I just think the 360 is better, especially for online which this guy wants.

I remember in the old days when GoldenEye had "crazy graphics". I go back and the golden gun is rectangle... Good times.
The old thing I like about Halo is the 1-hit kill knife.
