Cheapest Natural Gut vs. High End Syn Gut......Which one is better?

Let's say see this:

Cheapest Natural Gut:

Titan Natural Gut 17 String - $17.99

High End Syn Gut:

Babolat XCel Premium 17 String (New) - $14.75

Babolat XCel Power 17 String - $17.95

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17 String - $14.50

Gamma Professional 17 String - $19.95

The price are all most the same. So which one will you choose? And what's the pros & cons for ur choose?

I will still choose the natural gut.

The con is that that natural gut has more 'impurities' than other natural gut, thus leading to premature breakage. Also, you will need to be more careful when you string the Titan because of the impurities.

The pro is that it will play like other natural guts ;)

Titan NG is CRAP!!! I gave it a try and it's not worth the money.

X1 Biphase and Gamma Pro both provide consistent play day in, day out. I can't say that for Titan.

IMO, if you want to experience natural gut then go with the best stuff (VS, Pacific, Wilson, etc.)

Would u elaborate more on the dis-adv of Titan Natural Gut? What do u mean "not consistent"? Lose tension too soon?

Cheap guts play ok. But they are almost impossible to string at high tensions. They often have uneven gauges in a set making stringing alot harder aswell. I think it is almost more expensive to go for cheap gut than expensive gut. I am almost positive that you get twice the amount of play and half the hassle out of 5 sets of klip legend compared to 5 sets of a cheap gut.

BDE Rallye or Klip Legend at $24 hybrided with Gossen generic costs $13 dollars per set and will flat out kick ass on any synthetic out there. It is simply no contest.

I agree with this solution 100%! I currently use Klip's Adrenalin Gut/Poly string set and have found it to be incredibly playable and durable solution to finding a string that "has it all". Natural gut matched with a high quality poly/synthetic/multi-core is a great way to get a TON of performance without spending $35-$40 dollars.

However, if you want to go the all-gut route, then you owe it to yourself to play with Babolat VS/Wilson, Pacific or Klip. IMHO, these manufacturers make the finest gut sets available. I've strung and used gut from these manufacturers and have never been let down, both from a quality and performance perspective.

My .02 cets, of course. ;)

Hi Dude:

(24+13)/2=USD18.5

That's higher than most of the syn gut job. We have many other choice at this price level. R u saying it's better than any other choice at this price?

I like the Bab Tonic $26 and Forten Sweet $3 = $14.50.

What Drak said was correct.

I broke legend 16g in 25 hours, I have 22 hours on the tonic 15lg so far.
I did not like the Titan gut, felt hard.

Yep. When I tried value gut mains(~$25) and nylon mono cross(<$4),
it literally started a new era of my tennis life.

Yes, drak is right you can get value gut hybrid at around $13.

Generic Gosen costs under $2 a set when bought in a reel, not $13.

I use a full job of Babolat Tonic+ (around $25). It's way better than Titan, and I dont feel it's necessarly "way worse" than VS.

If you are experiencing Gut for the first time, I think you'll do fine with Tonic+. (Im not sure about the other ones around $25 a set because I havent tryed them)

You'll probally even like the playability of Titan because it's still better than any synthetic, although it just doesnt last very long which is frustrating.

According to Babolat themselves the only real difference between VS and Tonic+ is cosmetic impuritys in the string. But Ive only used VS once so Im sure someone else has another opinion on that. (I used VS in a hybrid with NXT, didnt notice a whole lot of diffrence other than paying $18 for a half set of anything seems like a huge rip off)

Exactamundo, just buy the "no name" or whatever Gosen reel TW sells, comes to about $1 for cross strings in a gut hybrid job. Any of those BDE/Legend/VS tonic $24-26 gut sets will work fine for the mains. In addition, I myself and a few guys I string for get significantly better wear from the gut/hybrid vs an all syn job, often twice the wear. And the playability and tension holding is in another league - again it is simply a no brainer.

Only really hard hitters or super toppy string breakers looking for control could look elsewhere - they can head the "Poly way", but for the masses IMO it is NO contest. Only exception is if you play in a LOT of moisture a lot of the time.

yeah, crossing any good string with og micro gives pretty good playability, and saves TONS of money. really popular with poly too, because it softens up the string bed.

In another post, I strung a PT280 with VS Power (old stock natural gut) main and LaserFibre LaserTour cross. My logic was that the LaserTour's tension maintenance would last a lot longer than regular synth gut, and thus making this setup last very long.

The first 8 hours was heaven and then all of a sudden the string bed just felt dead! No more bite, pocketing, and pop! Now, both the natural gut and LaserTour are still in decent condition with little fraying and notching.

What the heck happened? Did the LaserTour died or the old stock VS Power? Could it be because it's old stock natural gut? Could it also be that I hit at night most of the time and the humid might have shortened the natural gut's life?

As of right now, it looks like this setup would not break at all until another 10 hours, but the string bed has a dead feel. bummer!

I am in the process of finding the perfect cross string to hybrid with natural gut main. LaserTour or LaserFibre's laser treated strings are on the expensive side, but they seem to be the perfect candidates due to their claim for tension maintenance. Wouldn't regular synth gut in the cross die way before the natural gut?

My main dilemna right now is weather. During the winter/fall/spring in Washington, it's very hard to find a day that it isn't at least sprinkling a little outside. I know I'm not upgrading strings again until I get my ranking up (or get one, for that matter), so I have a little time to choose between a gut/syngut hybrid and full X-1. I'll probably end up with the X-1 just because we've gotten so much precipitation this year.

I haven't tried Vs touch, so I cannot compare it to tonic+ 16g.
Vs team (17g) is surely a different string. Tonic+ is stiffer, heavier, offers less feel and playability and a smaller sweetspot in comparison

This has been a very rugged year for weather, and it would be hard to make a case for global warming based on it. Not only wet, but COLD! My son's school tennis season started off with one good week of practice, but I think he's only been able to play once in the last two weeks because it's been so wet.

My wife plays pretty occasionally and I strung up her racquet with a full set of X1. It's a very cushiony but still solid feeling string. She'd occasionally have some elbow problems using a standard solid core synthetic gut but never with the X1. It's been in her racquet for maybe 16-18 months, probably nearing 100 hours of play, but it still feels as soft as I remember from when it was new. She hits very flat so wear isn't an issue, but the one downside is that the string moves around a fair amount. Despite that, there's only minimal notching, and it looks like it could last quite a bit longer.

I vote for Klip Legend. I tried BDE Rally before but it breaks too easily

Interesting as I think BDE Rally lasts longer. Must be type of ball hit and frame used. I am also talking about the 16 gauge.

Cheap guts are nasty. If you want gut on a budget, get Klip Legend and hybrid it with a nice syngut or multi.

Sorry I meant that it broke during stringing. I clamped it a little too tight and the string was bruised. I never bought BDE again after that. I never had the same problem with Klip Legend. I even clamped the end of the Klip super tight to see if it bruised but it didn't.

I bought a racquet once with BDE already in the frame and it lasted fine.

I have never had a problem with BDE Rally, or Klip guts in stringing or with any premature breakage. Probably strung a hundred gut or gut hybrid jobs in past 5 yrs, 3/4 of those being BDE.
