I'm a big fan of Gasquet's game, but I don't think his forehand or serve are good enough to propel him to top 3.

Great to see you again, Hops:)

V. interesting comparison, but Fed is Fed, he just took off at Wimbledon 2003, and left everyone in his trail ...

Agreed. He has a great backhand, but does not have near the touch or the power off of every wing that Federer has.

Indeed, very similar stats. They also share the similarity of having a weak mental game at that age. Perhaps Gasquet can also learn to overcome this weakness in the future like Federer.

if you think that then you obviously havent seen gasquet play very much. he has some of the best hands and feel in the game in general and he can crank it out on both wings just as big as fed can, bigger off the backhand wing actually. off the forehand, he can definitely rip some forehands but instead he chooses to go for more angles and attempts to develop points and that usually means to take some pace off of his shots.

Actually I have seen Gasquet many times, and your exagerrated accessments of his abilities is typical of how overrated he is. He is very good but not nearly, and will never be nearly the player he is hyped to be by those with an inflated opinion of his abilities. Think what you want, but I predicted before this year Djokovic would leave him in his dust and I was right, and I now freely say Murray will be clearly ahead of him by this point next year. Just wait and see that turn out right too. As for comparing him to Fed, outside the backhand he doesnt even come close to Federer in anything. Saying Gasquet can crank a forehand anything like Federer is a complete joke, in their matches forehand rallies looks like a man vs a little boy. If he was as good as you say he would be in the top 3, instead he is ranked #8, and only with a bunch of guys scrambling for #8-#15.

Just because you have a greatly inflated opinion of Gasquet, dont assume those who dont never have seen him play.

Stats at age 21 mean little. Nadal has won three majors at age 21, and fed had none. so is nadal a much better player? no. some players take more time to develop.

Even Nadal certainly wont catch where Federer is at 26 when he is 26 (in fact he will probably be retired due to injuries by then), but he is born within a week of Gasquet and is already way way ahead of where Gasquet is, and will only get further ahead in the years to come.

I don't know man, I've seen Gasquet play many times also. His feel is incredible, probably the best on tour. He's also probably one of, if not the best shotmakers I've EVER seen. The way he plays now is eerily similar to Federer when he was his age. Federer had the great forehand and weak backhand, while Gasquet has the great backhand and weak forehand. Even Federer himself says how much he loves to watch him play. The problem with Gasquet is purely mental, just like Federer when he was 21. He plays too far behind the baseline and lets his opponents push him around. He's got to be more aggressive, and take it to his opponents, learn how to set up points. We've seen him hit 90 winners at Wimbledon. How can you say he's not talented?

There is an old chinese saying "Big china(bowl) finsihes late".

I think Gasquet is a bigger bowl compared to Djokovic. I think Gasquet's tennis is being aimed much higher than Djokovic.

Federer's tennis completed later than his peers. Sampras was lagging behind his peers in his early career.
It just always work that way. It just takes longer to complete bigger potential.
Guys like Hewitt is a smaller potential. It takes to quicker to complete it. I think Djokovic is more like Hewitt. His tennis completes earlier but will have some inherent limit.

But this is all about "potential". It's possible that big bowls never finish.
At this point, Gasquet's fitness is a big question. He plays like Federer in a small tournament and I don't know how many times he's had muscle cramps in slams.

It's too early to call whose prediction is right on Gasquet or Djokovic's career.

I think the top echelon of tennis is getting tougher in Federer, Nadal, Djokovic. And real McCoy who can challenge these top 3 is Nalbandian.
Right below them real potential is Gasquet and Baghdatis. and maybe Murray.
Others are just not talented enough.

You don't think Gasquet even has a masters series title in him?

Maybe I was a little harsh in my calls in some areas (then again maybe not) but my main point is he is not on his way to a career even close to Federer-like. Nadal will never come close to matching the Federer's achievements, and I cant imagine Gasquet even coming close to matching Nadal's career. He could win a Masters, but I highly doubt if he ever does it will be the way Djokovic and Nalbandian won theirs this year.

Gasquet will show Nadal and Djokovic he is here to play in the masters cup. In terms of raw talent...I think he has more ability then both Novak and Rafa. The results are yet to come, I often see Gasquets mind wonder after playing a brilliant set of tennis.

He is my darkhorse for the tournament.

Yeah how many times have we heard these kind of predictions before.
Gasquet is not, has never been, and will never be, in the class of Nadal or Djokovic, and after a bit into next year year probably will never again be ranked over Murray. Time for a reality dose people.

I don't understand why so many of you feel the need to rant on Gasquet and how he has been overhyped, look at the stats posted, EXTREMELY similar to probably the greatest player of all time at that age. Roger himself said that he has serious potential.

Go back and look at Gasquets match with Roger in Hamburg, his match with Roddick at Wimbledon, even his Pacific Life Open match vs Hewitt and tell me that he has no potential and is over hyped. His backhand is the best in the world, hands down. I'm not saying that he will come to be the world number one, but I am definitely not counting him out. From what I have seen he is one of the best shot makers I have ever watched play and can never count him out in any match.

He may take some more time to peak, but look at how long it took Roger to come into his own and really master his weapons. Give Richard some time and all of you slamming him as a player may end up very very surprised.

I like Gasquet's game. I hope he overcomes it. Another Federer like player challenging Federer? Would be real nice!

Keep dreaming. Federer has challengers, their names are Nadal and Djokovic. Gasquet will never be a rival to Federer, except maybe if he stays into his 30s and reaches a point he is fighting to stay in the top 10 with people like Gasquet.

i agree stats mean nothing at that age..people are always saying that he has potential to get better...what about sayy..nadal who is around the same age..has he reached his peak because he's already won a few slams? =S

i like gasquet but federer and gasquet are not in the same universe

gasquet has a nice bh and a decent fh, a good serve, nice feel and above avg volleys.

BUT his return is horrible, he cannot take the ball early like federer. His footwork, speed, athleticism are nowhere near federer when they were the same age. He is not as gifted as federer physically at the same age.

Federer took down pete "goat" sampras at wimbledon. What did gasquet do? Beat federer on CLAY in a masters series?

Gasquet may win a slam and be a top player for some time but he wont be the next federer.

The stats don't at all support the idea that his return is horrible. If anything, they show that he doesn't do nearly as well as he should against 2nd serves, but does very well against 1st serves and overall return games won.

Very well is giving him too much crredit IMO. he does pretty well against 1st serves and below average against 2nd serves. that is because of his long windup on his bh. because of that he is often forced to slice the ball, and his slice isn't the best b/c his topspin is so strong.

all u guys doubting gasquet are idiots. go to youtube and watch all the wimbly clips. average volleys and returns my ass. and whoever talked about gasquet being above murray is bs, think again. look at their head to head record.

So that is his grand moment of glory? Winning a recent match against Andy Murray where he got bageled in the 2nd set. Wowee, I am so impressed, all hail the new #1. Quite frankly I fully expect if Murray is able to stay healthy next year he will pass Gasquet no problem. However sticking to the facts of today when is the last time Gasquet has beaten a Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic. How many Grand Slam semis and quarters has he been in so far, and how many Masters titles does he have. End of story.

how many titles does murray have? like 3 right? has murray beaten Djokovic? hmmm? How many times has murray beat fed? for gasquet i think its at least 2. seriously dude, gasquet has won way more titles than murray. whats one of murrays weapons? does he even have one? before you start a debate get some solid facts u can build off of.

Actually Gasquet has only beaten Federer once, and it was on clay well over 2 years ago. Since then he has lost 6 straight times. Gasquet is also 0-4 against Nadal as a pro.

Beating Djokovic here probably is not a big deal. Ferrer also easily beat him. It looks like the year is done for Djokovic in his mind and he is mailing in at this event. If Gasquet ever beat Djokovic in a grand slam event I would be impressed. Probably wont though, his first RR match here with Nadal gives a glimpse how he performs vs a big gun when the heat is on.

Gasquet needs to put much more effort on training. Everybody (here, in France) is expecting too many things from him since he's 7...

Murray has 3 titles but he is a year younger then Gasquet. He could have 7 like Gasquet has at the same age in a years time.
