Donald Young now ranked #85

Looks safe to get direct entry into the next couple slams (French + Wimbledon). And you know he'll be at the USO no matter what his ranking is. If he wins a couple matches at Indian Wells and/or Key Biscayne, he could crack the top ~60 and get direct entry to Masters Series events.

I'm pulling for him.

The guy is over hyped completely, he isn't the superstar many seem to believe he is.

That's great news. The kid just needs to keep learning every week, and that's all you can do. I'm still mistified as to why he didn't play Las Vegas. With the draw as weak as it was, he would have had great chance to bolster his ranking. I as well will be pulling for him all year.

i don't no why people are hating on this guy hes a good player and i think he can do.. don't listen to them donald young im rooting for ya

His mom needs to get him to control that temper, because that attitude is something he could harness to make him better. Or a coach?

I don't think it is just his temper, but overall attitude, he seems like the sort of guy that wouldn't give 100% if he went a set and a break down. But he is young and he will learn I'm sure, despite him being vastly overrated he still has something their, nice variety to his style.

Yes indeed "The D" is in the top 85 and i only see him getting better this year, he was so unlucky not getting to the semi's at Memphis, i see him doing well at Indian Wells.

Wish we could dig up some of those old threads where donald was 15- 16 and getting beat in major events and people on here were saying things like "he'll never win an atp match", and he's a bust etc. at 16 years old for crying out loud.
Donald needs to work on the temper, but at 85 in the world he over-acheiving at this point.
Most people on here should read more and POST LESS.

I dont see him doing well at Indian Wells. That is an event with pretty much the entire top 100. Almost everyone in the field is a better player then he is.

Not true hes a great player with tons of talent. He jsut needs more experience. Most of his losses right now are due to mental weakness. He usually wins the first set then he starts making some mistakes than breaks down and loses. WIth age hell be a great player.

What is your definition of a great player. Is a top 30 player a great player. That is pretty much his career potential, at best.

That's a ridiculous statement. I can see Young beating MANY top 100 players at the young age of 18. Wait until he's in his prime at 22-25, and you'll be eating your words.

Well, if he is ranked 85, he should beat 14 of the top 100, I guess. I never bought into the hype that he was going to be great, but I'm rooting for him to keep improving and moving up the rankings.

It's all about sustainability. If you can bounce around the top 30 for several years, go on some good runs and stay healthy, then you are definitely a great player. I don't know how they do it in tennis but if you were to do that in a sport like baseball you'd be a contender for the hall of fame.

I think it is still too early to fall for this guy. Right now I'd have to say he isn't very impressive, but I think he has potential and hope he has a solid career and sticks around for awhile.

I think he has just gotten to "full grown" within the last year. It takes most people a few years to grow into their bodies.

He's only "not impressive" if you bought into the hype when he was 15. In reality he's on a great track, and is exceptional for his age.

Donald should be in the thousands.

I don't know, he may be a little better than that, but all this talk about him is getting ridiculous. The guy grinded his way through one match and then got into the third round by forfeit and was crushed.

Many, many people in the ATP are more than capable of that.

Do not under estimate Donald. He has a burning desire to be the next great champion. He has time on his side. You will all come to understand in due time. You watch, Wimbledon will speed up the grass soon enough and Donald will serve volley to victory and with his win American tennis will get back on its feet. He's leading the next generation of champions.

I see him at about the Mardi Fish level throughout his career. His results may be a touch better if he can stay healther than Fish has.

He has a ton of potential and the last thing I want to be is a "arm-chair qb" or "keyboard commando" on a thread. He has some great game, but as an observer, and someone who is almost 35, you know that sometimes another point of view or fresh set of eyes will help your game more than "the want to". That why I posted the DY would be helped by a coach.

He should be in the main draw for all the slams this year - it'll be interesting to see if he can match getting to the 3rd round again. And I wouldn't really say that Lopez "crushed" him. It was competitive.

Right. If they ever speed up Wimbledon grass, Isner or Querry would have much better chances then Young.

You need a big serve to win Wimbledon, or at least an effective one. Young has neither of those. It just gets the ball into play. Even Henman, who had a "modest" serve by today's standerds was averaging around 120 in his prime, ocasionally breaking the 130 barrier.

With our most heralded youngster to come along since Agassi finally cracking the top 85, this is indeed a banner day for American sports fans everywhere.

How excited his sponsors must be, now that he gets to show his heavily-endorsed wardrobe and products off to a crowd of dozens out on court 13. Tens of millions well spent.

Oh...nice point...
IF wimbledon will speed up the grass...guy like dy will NEVER....and i mean N E V E R ! ! ! reach the 4th round...
He has not a lot of firepower or a big serve...so imho the only slam in which he could make something is RG...

And,btw,i have a burning desire to be the next lindsay lohan...

Has anyone noticed that Sam Querrey, who is maybe 18 months older than DY, now has broken the top 50? I'll admit that all the top players at Las Vegas went out early so Querrey had a much easier draw, but he is definitely showing better results than DY.

Querrey has been playing at the tour level for a lot longer than DY. He was top 50 last year. But for all of his results, and all of DY's "lack" of results, Querrey is only about 35 spots ahead of DY. And, in the next few months, DY is only going to earn more pts.

Vegas would have been a perfect opportunity to gain pts, but, the season is long. If he gets good draws at IW and Miami I'm confident he'll pull thru those matches now. If he draws Fed or Nadal or somebody like that, then he'll have to maybe wait for the summer hard court season. I'm not sure how he'll do on clay.

Why do people always forget that Federer was not on the radar as a great player until he was 22...?

Ridiculous, you might want to wait until he actually matures to make such blanket, ridiculous, ill-informed, statements.

i don't understand all the ignorant comments made about Donald Young. He's a good, talented young player that's earned his ranking like every other player out there. We will see if he every manages to become a top player but for now i congratulate him on his current success

Quite true, I don't know how most can adequately gauge Young's potential right now. I think if anyone watches him there is obvious talent, if he has the desire to make the most of it then good things should be on the horizon.

The kid is only 18, I don't know why a lot of people dismiss him already. He has not even played a full year on the tour.

DY caught a break in the Indian Wells draw - he drew a qualifier. Although that can be tough b/c they have matches under their belt. Anyway, if he gets thru to the 2nd he gets a shot at revenge on F Lopez.

um Hewitt won Wimbledon, and he beat Nalbandian in the final, both of whom have below-average serves by today's standards.

Great draw for DY at IW. He gets Bobby reynolds who he's 3-0 against. He should get past him and get another crack at Lopez.

Lopez is playing well right now, not sure if Donald can do much of anything, if he gets past 1st round.

DY taking care of a seeded player in a Masters Event. Moving on to round three. Haters... PLEASE stop hating. The kid can play. And he's only 18.
