The mighty Fed will regain his form, win Wimbledon an USO and show everybody he's still the best out there. Then he'll proceed to crush the top players in the Masters Cup as he did last year after his loss to Gonzo in RR.

Everyone has a lot of points to defend, but when its all said and done I think Roger will be No. 1 at the end of the year.

Excellent posts, gentlemen. This is the kind of high quality thread we get when it's not a biased thread.

It's really only a 3 man race for #1. Federer might win Wimby, but I doubt he'll win the FO or the USO. As a fallback, Federer could play more tournaments to gain points.

Nadal's going to have problems keeping all the clay points since 4 tournaments are grouped in consecutive weeks. Likely he'll skip Hamburg, but that will cost him 350 points. Otherwise if he does play Hamburg/Rome/Monte Carlo/Barcelona, he's conceding summer hardcourt to Federer and Djokovic.

Djokovic is a wild card. Still a bit inconsistent to contend for #1 imo. He'll need to improve on clay and indoor surfaces. Winning the Olympics is possible and he can certainly pick up points from indoor Masters (Madrid, Paris) and Master's Cup. Losing all those points from Miami hurt.

Federer is going to have a rough year anyway you look at it. Nadal can take #1 as he controls his own destiny and has been the most consistent of the big 3 this year. If only he doesn't run from summer hardcourts....

Funny statement. Federer's best chance to win a slam this year is actually the U.S Open, followed by Wimbledon. Federer's only major threat at the U.S Open is Djokovic. I am a Nadal fan but I dont think he can win the U.S Open, fast hard court just isnt his thing.

Gasquet?!?! ROFL. Why is he in the poll? Just for a laugh I hope. You might as well put my pet hamster in there.

I don't think Nadal will win the USO either. Djokovic, Davydenko, Ferrer and Nalbandian could contend with Federer for the USO. I'd like to see Nalbandian or Davydenko win it as they have arguably the two best 2HBHs in the game now and it's almost now or never for those guys to win a major.

IF Nadal gets through those 4 clay tournaments with his points intact and holds the French (and/or Federer plays poorly during those clay tournaments), he's got a very good chance to take #1 just playing okay to solid during summer hardcourt season. He could out do Federer at the Olympics (Fed went out in round 2 in 2004 after going 4th place in 2000) and make up ground in Madrid, Paris, and the Master's Cup. Nadal could also skip the Olympics gambling on Federer not doing well and challenge Roddick for the Legg Mason tournament.

In all honesty I think Federer will be the year end #1. I think Federer will do well at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the year end Masters.

Haha. Like him or hate him, the proof is in the pudding. Rankings don't lie and the gap is thinning.

Are you jumping the bandwagon, CC? Shame on you! I stick with my picks: The one handers, Federer, Henin, and Gasquet. Win or lose, you must stick with your athlete. I already said I won't be a Djokovic fan no matter what.

I have always rooted for the Spanish Armada: Ferrero, Nadal, Moya, Ferrer, etc., etc. I respect Fed a huge amount but have never been a 'fanboy'. ;) I don't see the necessity in trashing a player (unless it's Hewitt or the 'cheater'). No switching ponies for this girl. :)

Give me a break on Ferrer. The guy has already peaked and if you are even talking about Federer contending for #1 it means you are assuming he will have recovered somewhat decent form in which case he will have zero problems with Ferrer on any surface, let alone a fast hard court. Nalbandian will never win a grand slam, the only surface he is good enough to beat the best is indoors and there are no grand slams indoors. If Federer is playing well enough to even be considered for the year end #1 according to you, which means he is playing a heck of alot better then he is right now, then Nalbandian would never beat him at the U. S Open. Davydenko will never beat Federer in a grand slam, he freezes whenever they play, and again if you are even talking about Federer possibly being #1 you must be assuming he has recovered somewhat decent form in which case he would play well enough Davydenko would never hold it together to beat him. Like I said Djokovic is Federer's only threat at the U.S Open, and the U.S Open is Federer's best chance to win a slam this year, with Wimbledon a close second.

I honestly think the points will catch up with Fed at the majors. I don't see him going as deep into those tournaments at this point. Of course he could completely turn around. But these small tournaments are saving him right now and he is gaining points but despite the fact that he is gaining points doesn't mean he is playing well enough to maintain his spot. I really think the clay court season and abbreviated grass season could hurt Fed.

I cannot bet on the fact that Roger will win Wimbledon and US open again. Did you see the final of wimby last year ?? Did you see Roger prior to the final, and how dominant he looked until he got to the final that is. In the final, he looked vunerable and betable. Rafa who is a clay court player made Roger look ordinary. This year he will have to contend with Novak, Rafa and Andy even. and as for US open, oh boy, i believe Novak has passed Roger in that surface.

I believe tennis to open again to not only Federer or Nadal or joker, GS will be shared among few players, as Mighty Fed is no longer invincible.
