I will be driving down to Charleston for this event for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I'd appreciate any ticket purchasing strategy as well as suggestions on where to stay (on a budget.) Thanks in advance!
a good strategy might be to find a place on the other side of town from Daniels Island...perhaps Folly Beach. maybe you just buy tickets online and still have time to have them mailed to you?
maybe a local will step up to the plate with ideas
Thanks, NoBad. I am hoping for a knowledable local, too. The ticket question specifically is that they are selling 2 kinds of tickets; Grounds passes and Championship tickets (or something like that.) And while I'd like to stay near the beach, I'd like to keep the cost way down if possible. Ideally, I wouldn't mind a longer drive to the venue in exchange for a fun location.
that's why i suggested Folly Beach...when last i was there, you could score a place by the beach for a lot less dinero than on the other side of the tracks, and get the occassional bonus waif of MaryJane in the air .....i bet it's a bit diff now, but Folly has tradionally been the bohemian less pricey beach venue in the Chucktown area...it's really not that far from the tennis venue..hear traffic is really bad there these days....glad i moved here instead...you should come here instead to the Bausch and Lomb the week before.....might be our last year.
The problem you run into closer to the beaches like IOP and Sullivans is there aren't any hotels out there. I never go over to Folly Beach so I don't know about out there. Charleston traffic can be a pain too so bear that in mind. I see you are from western MA, one thing to bear in mind is that charleston is pretty much a 0 tolerance speeding zone. If you drive high over the limit, they WILL nail you so keep that in the back of your head.
You could stay right off of highway 17 in Mt Pleasant near the Isle of Palms Connector: there is a shopping complex there with several hotels and what not and it's a 5 minute drive across the connector to the beach at Isle of Palms. There are a ton of great places to eat at every size budget as well.
One last point, I just saw that Sharapova will be there as well so the lineup should be $$.
Weather is looking good for charleston next week: mid 60's for the high monday through Wednesday before heading up to mid 70's for thursday through saturday.
One cool place to eat is on Sullivan's Island called Poe's (after Edgar Allen). It's a hamburger/chicken/beer joint that is really tasty. Prices are reasonable and it's not more than 10 minutes away from you. It's literally 2 turns away. You would hang a right onto the main drag of Coleman Blvd. Coleman Blvd eventually turns into Ben Sawyer Blvd and this takes you all the way onto Sullivan's Island. The only other turn would be a right hander onto Middle Street, and Poes is down on the right. You can eat outside as well which is perfect this time of year. I don't think you will be disappointed on the weather. We always want what we don't have: we've had a cool spring this year so far and my wife and I have been remarking that this sure is Nantucket weather! I would be tired of the cold however by this time of year so I can imagine how you feel.
