can serena win another major this year?

ive always been a big fan of serena and her sister but more serena. venus is just to inconsistent, but i dont know if serena has it in here to win another major. the talent is deffinitely there and so she says is the desire. after her miami win i wanted to believe she was gonna dominate womens tennis again but im just not sure:-?

Serena will never dominate womens tennis again. Those days for both Williams are long past. As for winning a slam this year, well their recent years pattern seems to be Serena winning the Australian every second year and Venus Wimbledon every second year, so perhaps look for Serena to win her next slam at next years Australian and Venus at next years Wimbledon.

Serena always can win a slam, same with her sister. The Williams sisters are good at winning slams when people least expect it. You just can't predict them.

Serena can definitely win a Slam this year. She could also lose in the 2nd round, or not show up. You never know with her.

She's won more than any other active player. No reason she can't do it again. I mean beating the tour's top prospects, Maria 1 &2, 1&1 and Justine 0-2 in their recent meeting sounds like some awesome potential to lift as many trophies as she wants to!

Yes i believe she can, when Serena is timing the ball right, serving well and moving well no one can beat her, at times even when she is not her fighting spirit gets her through, the Petrova match Aus Open for example, Serena is a fight and a great player, and still has it in her to win may more majors, i doubt Serena will stop until she has reached double figures in slam she only has 2 to win to get into double figures

Yes Serena has won only 2 slams in the last 4 years yet has awesome potential still to lift as many trophies as she wants to, LOL! Keep dreaming fangirl.

Yes, she can. She's the best in the world when she gets serious.

Funny pic of Serena on the TMZ website today. Serena, apparently hangs out at the old persons' beach:

Serena's the best in the world when healthy. Leads the active list, so she must be doing something right. Kind of funny how she's been off and on over the years and still leading the tour. I don't call that dreaming, I'd say I was wide awake watching her beat the two biggest contenders world #1 Henin, 2 and love, and feeding Maria breadsticks. Who beats her by those scores? Um, nobody!

^^ Oh my. If she keeps this weight and continues to play tennis she will not be able to walk in her 40's/ Anyways she can win a slam this year but she is not the only one. Will she is another question.

ahh come on we didn't need to see that:shock:

Why not? A lot of men love curves and extra weight on women. To each their own. As long as people post pictures of scrawny, flat chested, for the most part horse-faced girls on this forum and call them 'goddesses', I openly welcome a change to show what the majority of American women represent.

To the OP: Of course she can and most likely will.

She is fit but her backside is massive and it makes her lower half look fatter, she can't really help that. I can''t stand her but she is not fat.

Well although I have not been to america, I guess there are more women with something more to them than your regular thin supermodels. So people only wish what they can not get. Also have in mind there are many teenagers here and there you go.

Very true and I really couldn't care less what type of woman the 'gentlemen' on this forum are interested in. When someone makes a derogatory comment regarding weight or appearance in that it is repulsive I feel the need to respond. Sometimes silence truly is golden and when the teens (and some men as well) grow up they'll realize that they are the ones who appear repulsive. Weight can be lost but ugliness on the inside is another story entirely. IMO.

Very true! Not to mention that reed thinness is a major prerequisite for oesteroporosis. Women need some meat on their bones. Too thin and it even interferes with their mentstrual cycles. There's more to being healthy than what we've been programmed to believe.

My thoughts exactly,I prefer women with curves but that's only my personal preferance, everybody has a right to their opinion. For example Kate Winslet is an ideal woman for my taste.

^^I agree. Kate Winslet is gorgeous and has a very healthy perspective on life as well. I heard she was asked in an interview about her weight and after a brief pause she said something along the lines of, "I wasn't aware my weight was the reason we're here. I was under the assumption we were here to discuss the movie, but since I expect you to question (the lead actor) about his penis size, I can offer a statement if you wish". This was apparently followed by an uncomfortable silence after which the interviewer quickly changed the topic back to the movie. You go girl! Polite yet to the point.

I agree that everyone has their personal preference and respect that fact. My point to the posters who wish to throw stones is that they should keep the insults out of the equation. People can knock Serena's size and say how 'gross' they feel it is, but in reality, these same 'boys' would never get so much as a conversation out of her, and deep inside, they know this. lol.

One of my friends just loves the biker look. To her the long hair, tattoos, tight leather, etc. is 'to die for'. I cringe a little every time she mentions this but just because this isn't my type of man doesn't mean that he isn't the perfect specimen for her. ;)

Yes, she can. To think otherwise would be utterly ridiculous IMO. She has had more than impressive wins over the other top ladies already this year, and appeared to be *very* fit in Miami.

:) LOL @ "horse-faced." Hee hee! ::pauses:: ::Frowns:: Wait, could *I* have a horse-face? I've never consciously considered the potential horse-ness of a face, including my own...:?

I agree. I also agree with the posters who doubt the Williams's commitment level/ability to remain solidly at the top and dominate the field. However, IMO they're always a serious threat at any individual tournament, big or small, whatever the surface.

She leads the active list due to her incredible achievements in 2002-2003 when she actually was the best player in the world. She has never been the best player in the world since then, and it is only a matter of time before she is passed by younger players who are in their prime now while she has wasted hers away with cheeseburgers and milkshakes.

Who cares if she beat a badly off form/playing horrendously Justine in a non-slam tournament. The 3 times before she played Justine in a grand slam and lost all 3, last years French, last years Wimbledon, and last years U.S Open. Serena currently only has 1 more slam title then Justine, 8 to 7, and Justine has won 5 in the last four years, Serena only 2, so most likely Justine will pass Serena sooner rather then later, probably tieing her at the French Open this year.

As for Maria next time she plays Maria she find out the difference in playing a healthy Maria rather then a Maria with a broken shoulder who cant serve like the last time they played. Maria has 3 slam titles by 20 years old by the way, Serena at that age had only 1.

Given to a bit of exaggeration, don't you think? Why is it ok for you to use injuries in defense of Maria's play, but not Serena's?

How many slams total does Maria have? And Serena?!?

Serena will win as many slams as she really, really, wants to win.

(If you really want to win, you put in the effort for practice, training, diet, psychological work, etc.)

She's only got a year or two left where she can do that, though.

Nope I actually love myself very much (and no horse face here thanks). That isn't what I wrote and not what I meant. I believe you know that though. I am defending the overweight women of the world which I can do without being in that category. I have nothing against thin women anyway, but if confused as to my meaning (again)...please feel free to reread my posts.

she could win a slam anytime she chooses to focus on her game and fitness. problem is she does so only intermittently. anyway i don't like her because of her attitude so i hope she loses.

I found this in Wertheim's Tennis Bag...

It pretty much sums up how I feel...Steve's answer

I don't claim to have watched every match Serena Williams has played, or read every article about them, but it seems to me that if Mary Carillo and almost every other tennis announcer/journalist says that Serena only loses when she plays badly, why is it soooo awful when Serena says it?

Against Jelena Jankovic [in the Sony Ericsson Open final], it was obvious that Jelena had nothing to do with the outcome of that match. Your thoughts?
-- P-Sqaured, NYC

Truthfully, I was thinking the same thing the entire tournament. And I came away with a new perspective re: Serena's sour reaction to defeat. I don't want to give Serena a total pass on her sore losing. (It's beneath her to attribute losing to an opponent's "lucky shots" or "playing at 40 percent.") But put yourself in her shoes.

She has the capability to blow away the world's top-ranked player 6-2, 6-0, as she did in the quarterfinals. She has the capacity to blow through a tournament, as she did last year in Australia and last week in Miami. She has the ability to render her opponents essentially meaningless. How immensely frustrating must it be to lose? When all cylinders are firing, she's virtually unbeatable. One can see how it must drive her nuts when that doesn't happen.

Larger point: I've said this before, but I don't see how you can follow the sport and not be awed by the whole Williams narrative. You couldn't craft a richer story than this: humble beginnings, great triumphs, outsider status, insider status, family tragedy, divorce, race, money, grace, disgrace, education, sports.

The plot wavers all the time. "Venus is cooked! No, wait: She's Wimbledon champ!" "Serena is bored! No, wait: She's trim and buff and toasting Justine Henin!" "Serena rules! No, she's pulling out of an event and taping a reality show." "Venus is looking fairly strong! No wait: She's taking an unexpected leave!" Really, it's just remarkable. And I'm not sure the Republic of Tennis realizes how lucky we are to have them around.

Yeah and that presumes in each case her opponents is also playing their best or even playing well. It neglects to point out that Justine Henin is playing like crap right now and is top ranked because of her 2007 results when her tennis was 300% better then it has been in 2008. Justine has also been destroyed by Maria and even lost to Schiavone, so a lopsided win over her now for a top player is nothing that special. Kuznetsova and Jankovic both gave Serena a tougher time then Justine, pretty much proving my point. To just gush over her lopsided win over a horribly off form Justine and not even reference the way Justine is playing this year only reflects the individuals bias.

Also she did not blow through the draw in Australia last year. She had a very tough time in a few matches. The final was her only blowout.

Maybe the same types of people who use the excuse of Sharapova's "broken shoulder" for HER poor performances?

8, 7, 6, 15...what's the difference? They're both sho-ins for the Tennis Hall of Fame.

As for Maria next time she plays Maria she find out the difference in playing a healthy Maria rather then a Maria with a broken shoulder who cant serve like the last time they played.
If they meet when they're both, somehow, totally healthy, then Serena wins, hands down. She's simply a better player with a greater arsenal of shots. She also moves better. I'm not sure which one screams louder though...

I think her best chance is the U.S Open. Assuming Justine comes out of her funk she is much too strong for everyone on clay, including Serena as her 4-1 edge in both head to head and French Open titles shows. At Wimbledon Venus is probably too strong for everyone although if she plays Serena there is the whole mental thing so who knows. The U.S Open is her best chance since there is no opponent too tough there really.

How many matches showcase two players playing great at the same time? Not many. It's funny how so many caveats come when it's a player the poster doesn't like. I could say the same about a lot of players and their opponents, then of course, that would be bashing!
