Speaking of good players, one of my friends mix doubles partner from last years simon cup.. was on the courts today. She has to be 6'2... covers the net like an octopus.. and has a pretty good serve. I had talked to her 2 years about playing tournaments. She seemed to improve. I wonder if she is playing the Reston Open. I need to drop her an email.
.

Uh, no you don't.

we had a waitress that looked like the younger version of jennifer today. i tried to talk hollywood up with much success.. but he totally dropped the ball considering he has no movie reference outside of rambo. the waitress even talked about her foundness for cow tripping in the boonies and that's right up hollywood's alley (next door to where he lives). during my younger days i would of follow it up with lets go tip a cow now.. and then i'll tip you over.. something smooth tfm style.

oh well i hope he's regretting it on his 2hr drive home.. i've even gave him directions for a little scenic detour though the slums of anacostia

Blue gear has actual ridges in the string. You really cant understand how illegal the stuff is until you see it first hand :) Honestly I have not hit with it but no string I have seen even resembles that stuff.

yup. you can see it with bare eyes. or as sapient says, just use sandpaper. it cant be good for your arm though....the way i am hitting so late anyways.

Well boys, we may need to have Sup start running some TWMAC clinics. Seriously.

Lost my #2 singles match last night, by ONE FREAKING POINT!!! :(

Lost first set 3-6, managed to come back and win second set 6-4, and we were neck and neck in the 10 point 'champion's TB' when we ran out of time. Sudden death, next point wins the match. My opponent, a *very* tall woman, had been chipping the ball out when I would bring her up, so sure enough, I tried it again, and for some *stupid* reason, tried to pass her cross court (after successfully hitting DTL on both sides all night). She puts away the easy volley...game, set, and match.

Thing is, even though I lost, I had a much closer match than our #1, so I think I'm getting promoted.

Honestly, I'm not really beating myself up too much...I was mad nervous, especially in that first set. I feel much better knowing I got this first match out of the way, and that I was not blown away...I was worried that I may be biting off more than I could chew...so to speak. (TFM!!! Be good!)

Interestingly enough, the match was at Worldgate. They've got the place all spiffed up for the tournament this weekend. Looked nice. Also, we were put on court #4. For you guys who are familiar with WG, that is the one court that is off by itself. It was bizarre playing in there...felt like a racquetball court! I would be interested to know the surface, too...quite peculiar and kind of rubbery.

Edited to add: Wow, just looked up my opponent on Tennislink. She was 8-2 last year in singles. ARGH!!!! ONE POINT!!!! #(%&#*$)(@!!!!

I already had an idea for the next meeting. Instead of round robin doubles, we will play a "21" tournament .. with a last 2 man/woman standing.

21- no serves.. both players start off with one rally shot to the middle (TFM?... please take note).. then you start the point. Each side has 2 players. If one player wins his point by forcing an error.. he gets 1 point. If he/she hits a winner.. 2 points. Each team has 2 players rotating. If one player wins the point, he can stay for one more rally. Max of 2 rallies.

Seems a bit confusing. Bottom line. Its singles, with no serve and you play points with a team mate behind you rotating in .. until someone wins 21 points.

Then BBQ and drink.

So close!!

Did you play your song in your head?

*waits for TFM joke*

Not until the second set...it is almost as if I 'forget' to do it! There was a lot of 'yoga' breathing too. I'm thinking of starting to implement some of the things I used to do before a big performance as well.

I was down 1-5 in the first, and then one of my teammates walked over to watch. I still lost the set, but managed to make it 3-6. I am now requiring this teammate to be courtside for every match here on out!

Thinking back, I do think I played a good match. I need to not be so tight and nervous in that first set, and just swing out. I am proud that, at 5-4, 40-30 in the second set, I hit a *gorgeous* serve down the T to seal up the second set. So...it isn't as if I am too nervous to go for it...I'm just too up and down, and overall too squirrely throughout the whole thing I think.

Oddly enough, I also realized that I have posted a picture of my opponent. At least I think so...have to go back and check some old posts. *running off to July of 2007*.

Oops...after bus duty maybe.

I didn't get too much feedback! Will post dates available for May and June.

Ok...I was just curious as I haven't given my availability in for that weekend yet. As long as I know far enough in advance, though, I'll be good.

Also...I'm noticing that, even though they are matched together, I'm starting to favor one of my racquets over the other? Is this normal? I'm wondering if it is all in my head, and I should just keep rotating them to keep them as similiar as possible.

No the Mighty "Conejo" stomped me again. Lost first set in a tie break 7-6, Went up 3-0 in the second set and couldn't hold the freaking lead! Lost the second 6-4.

At this point we had to move off the court, but luckly the other teaching court opened. We worked on short putaways (a glaring hole in my game right now) then played a third set. I was fried - lost that one 6-2.

I lost, but these matches are always fun. But one day I swear I'm going to another one.

BTW- he's playing real well with that Technifiber. He'd be super nasty if he added some mph or kick to that serve.

BTW 2- He aced me about three times, outwide to the deuce court with what were probably the slowest aces I've ever seen. Landed short on the outside service line. I stood there like a idiot.

UGH. i'm really sorry to hear that. wrist and TE took me out of the game for nearly 2 years. don't mess around with that. let your body heal. stop playing Wii tennis. oh and try some of that joint juice stuff.

Switch to play with your other hand/arm!

What is it that makes you favor the racquet. Swings easier, grip shape, bumper guard newer. what?

Take the test. put them down.. close your eyes.. then start swinging one at time.. see if you can tell which one you like more..

Same thing with me; same racquet, same model, same string, same tension. One grip is about an eighth of an inch bigger, but everytime I get them strung, one or the other feels more comfortable - and it doesn't seem to be the same one every time.

Wonder why that is? Any words of wisdom, Sup? Or are we just conjuring this from our vivid imaginations?

If you didnt get it matched.. it can be a plethera of things. Exact racquets .. which Topaz has.. appears to result for a vivid imagination. Then again, I must hear what she thinks is different. Is it how it swings, the grip.. the color.. how her left leg is shorter than her right.. I'm not sure...

You.. should get your racquets matched. I can help out with balance and weight, but until my RDC machine gets in.. its as good as it gets.

I would guess that it's the overgrip that might have been attached differently on the rackets. Atleast that's the one thing I've notice that might make the most difference in "feeling". That and stringing/tension. If a racket is about to break then it typically feels horrible (for me). It's pretty nice to have a portable "StringMeter" in ones bag :)

TheJRK? JRStriker?... etc etc etc...

Not me...

Just got back from the doc, diagnosis ---> severe tendonitis of the forearm.

At least it's not TE. She gave me some painkillers and a whole lot of super strength anti-inflammatory meds. Oh, and she told me to not play tennis/kendo/pocket pool for at least 6 weeks. Even after that, I have to take it real easy for some time.

Well, at least I can still cycle to maintain some sort of exercise regimen. Anyone else have a road bike in the MAC?

JRstriker - I told the captain of our team what happened so I'll be out of the line-up for a while. I said judging by the way I played on Monday I'm probably doing the team a favor by being hurt. He said he was surprised we lost because he was watching us warm-up and said we looked like the stronger of the two teams... goes to show, looks can be decieving.

Topaz - A girl on my ACTA team knows you... or knows me through you, anyway... I can't remember her name, but I think I met her at that mixed dubs tournament at Skyline a few months back. I think she's Japanese, oh and she plays with an elbow strap thingy.

If anyone wants to demo a MG Prestige Pro [5/8] with Alu Flouro strings, lemme know, I'll have two just sitting in my bag rotting away... :(

Only team practice Saturday. Feel free to come out and coach as I had to "explain" that the Austrailian doubles formation was not illegal to our captain.

I should be on deck to play May 4th (hopefully) it's the first match I'm available to play.

BTW- that conversation went something like this.

(JR moves into Aussie formation at the net)
(Captain hits return long DTL)

Cap's partner: Is that legal? Can you stand there? You're not on your side of the net.

Me: I am on my side of the net. I can stand anywhere I want as the server's partner.

Cap: I'm not sure that's legal, I've never seen that before. I'll have to check the rule book.

Me: They play that formation in the pros, along with the "I" formation. It's legal.

Cap's Partner: But you're not on your side of the net (meaning I'm standing in the deuce court with the server)

Me: But I am on my side of the net!!!

Afterwards - Several long e-mail exchanges with PDF's of the rule book and explained that "my side of the net" does not refer to the ad or deuce court but the whole side of the court where my team stands.

Bummer JRK! Whoa, that's strange. A sudden onset of forearm tendonitis? Did you injure it before in kendo and maybe tennis made it worse?

Oh, and don't be down on your game. I'm sure you're one of the better players on our team. It takes some time to get into a match sharp mindset. Being USTA match fit can be a big advantage.

It could have happened during kendo. The forearm is one of the strike points in kendo and since you're all hyped-up on adrenaline you don't really feel it when you get hit.

More than likely, it's just simple over-use. Last week for example...

Thur - Tennis with you and the rest of the guys.
Fri - Kendo
Sat - TW MAC meet
Sun - Kendo
Mon - USTA match
Tue - off
Wed - ACTA practice

Rinse and repeat...

Like TFM said last Thursday:

TFM - Dude, you need to string your racket at a lower tension. You're not a young kid anymore.

Me - What? This is lower, it's at 57. Normally I'm at 62-64.

TFM - No, I mean like the low 50's... 50-52.

Me - That's too low.

TFM - Just admit your old dammit!

Me - <sighs>

There is this guy ... you may recognize him... bring him some warm sake.. then afterwards.. he will clap his hands.. rub them.. and pow! fix that forearm..

If not.. just drink the sake.. nothing hurts afterwards..

It is the newer of the two...I'm not sure, but for some reason it just seems to have more pop. Not sure if it is the racquet or the strings or a complete, total, and utter hallucination.

Yeah, I tried the JO thing and it just made my dogs attack me.

Sup - Didn't that guy die? Sake is good, although I only drink the chilled, milky-looking sake (nigori?). My sensei told me that hot sake was a gimmick invented to trick foreigners into drinking crappy sake... I'm not sure if that's true but I avoid it anyway.

No, we were doubles partners back in the day...the summer I first came back to tennis. We had a good run together, but since she was 2.5 (she is now 3.0) and I was 3.0 (now 3.5), when it came time for indoor we had to play on different teams. I do still see her from time to time and email as well...ironically she actually had a horrible bought with TE last season, and missed a big chunk of it. I think if she hadn't missed so much that she would have gotten bumped to 3.5 as well.

I know and also work with her pro, and he is 100% percent sure that her problems (which are now reoccuring) are from bad technique on her forehand. I played her in singles recently, and she talked about it, and she knows that is the problem as well, and instead of taking time off is just trying to correct the technique. Knowing her, she won't be taking time off anytime soon! She's a good player, and works very hard on her game.

I'm thinking sushi tonight, but then again, I'm still not feeling real well. Wondering if I've picked up something from the 450+ students I encounter every week. You would think by now that I have the immune system of...well...SUPERMAN!!!

Can I say that? Will Sup get mad?

+1 on the crab legs. Sometimes it's just too much work opening a bunch of smaller crabs. It's hard work and you end of feeling hungry after you crack open a whole plate of them.

Depends on what you were painting. :|

Our school was renovated recently. In our lobby area, we have four plain white columns. We are in the process of painting Matisse inspired shapes onto the columns (with acrylics) to spruce it up a bit.
