Henin looks like a genius after Fed's big loss in FO

Henin and Fed have just past their prime. Henin would have been spanked if she had played in FO, not because of skill, prohaps because of motivation. I am pretty sure she will un-retire like Hingis in the future. She just wants to relax a little bit, enjoy life, and avoid paying those hefty fines for withdrawing from all the big tournaments this year.

By not playing, most folks, including broadcasters, still think Henin as the best currently--citing lopsided win-loss records against the top 10 in the last few years. They also cited that Henin still had more points than Ivanevic, the current #1, had Henin not volunteerily told the WTA to drop her name from the ranking list.

On the other hand, people are doubting whether Fed's is the greatest now. To me, he is. There is no doubt. It's just that Nadal is one of the greatest of all time and the greatest clay courter.

Poor Fed, three straight FO finals and one semi and still got no championship. The man should deserve better.

Henin probably would have won again if she had played.
I agree. I wonder how Henin felt handing over the winner's trophy to Ivanovic on the podium yesterday?

When Ivanovic was thanking anyone and everyone during her winner's speech yesterday, I thought it was a glaring omission for her not to have also thanked Henin, standing next to her, for retiring, thereby giving her the #1 ranking and the French Open title.

Henin was playing realy bad this whole year losing left and right, so there is no chance she would have won.
There is a reason she decided to retire.

Ivanovic does not anything to do with this. She played great the whole tournament, and clearly deserved a title.

federer actually went out to the award ceremony for the #1 ranking (former year) while henin didn't even show up. they said it was at 10:30 pm and roger had a match the next day and still showed up, while henin had NO match yet didn't show up at all.... federer is the true #1 champion on and off the court.
henin can't compare to federer

I know that's a popular theory, but even playing sub-par much of the year doesn't mean she wasn't the favorite for Roland Garros. For many, she was. There is no better female player on clay right now. Ivanovic should have lost against Jankovic (who choked) and Jankovic always choked against Henin.

Are you guys saying that Henin has a better backhand than Federer and would have defeated Nadal in straight sets?

OK, they weren't 3 STRAIGHT finals, but the point still stands.

There's still hope for the Fed. HISTORY is on his side :p

it wasn't ivanovic who benefited directly from henin's retirement but sharapova but she (sharapova) couldn't hold on to the no.1 spot that fell on her lap. ivanovic on the otherhand earned it and deserves it. true, had henin played she may not be holding the RG trophy now but she (henin) didn't and ana won it fair and square.

There is a big difference here. One player won the last few championships at this tournament, the other has never. Do you not understand that this is a monumental difference?

Perhaps JH should have been the one to present the runners up to Federer. :p

Huh? How did Ivanovic not benefit? She won RG in the absence of Henin. If Henin had played, most analysts agree that Henin would have won another RG, and not Ivanovic. Sharapova didn't benefit at all because she didn't win. So whether Henin retired or not was irrelevant for Sharapova because the result was the same for her - she didn't win RG.

Everyone benefited directly from Justine's retirement, since everyone moved up a spot in the ranking.

Look at it this way. If Justine had played the French, chances are she would have at least made it to the quarters even with her lack of motivation. By reaching the quarters, she would have defended enough points to keep herself at the top for quite some time.

This means that neither Sharapova nor Ivanovic nor anyone would have overtaken the #1 ranking.

This is the best post on this topic!

It's funny that it's mentioned that Henin and Federer are both passed their prime but if you look at other great players (Agassi, Sampras, Navratilova, Graf) they've all managed to squeek out the occasional 1-2 major titles despite being in career decline. Federer's still got plenty of time to match or break Sampras's record. And I think Henin's kind of shortchanged herself, but you can't really argue with her results.

agreed. i should've phrased it another way. what i meant was sharapova became no.1 without doing anything. on the other hand, ivanovic won RG and deservedly took the top spot from sharapova. i never said that ivanovic would have overtaken henin in the rankings had henin not retired.

i don't dispute that but the fact is henin retired so this part of the discussion is moot.

what a ******** logic of the OP..so I guess everybody who's on top for a while should immediately retire and leave like a champion, right?

i disagree Henin and Federer are not past their prime, just because has lost a few times this year does not mean he is finished, there is no tennis player who can just keeping winning it has to end at some point. I think Justine could have won more had she opted to keep playing, but choose not to because frankly she has given half her life to tennis, it time for her to just do other things. Fed still has his game and has many great things to still give to the game

Henin quit because she had other things on her mind. She surprised everyone. She still had alot left.

I will be shocked if Federer doesnt win at least 4 more slams or more. This guy's game is not a grind.

Because except for Jankovic and Ivanovic nobody was really playing that great. Sharapova and Dementieva got mental blocked, Williams Sisters stinked. And even Safina wasnt the same as on Berlin. Since Henin owned both Serbians, chances are she could have take her 4th title and then retired. That would have been awsome!!!.
