Recruiting/Scholarships

i'm a sophomore in high school right now and not that i'm really thinking that much about college right now, but i'd just like to gain some perspective. i'm not sure about a couple of different things: First on whether i will be recruited or not, and if this recruitment translates into a scholarship or not, second on my chances of receiving a scholarship. And by the way my tennis recruiting ranking is about 170. So if anyone could just clarify some of these things for me, that would be great. Thanks.

Well....if you have pretty good academics and you're in the top 10 in b18's nationally Stanford and others on that level will be knocking on your door. Realistically evaluate how good you really are at tennis. And keep the academics up. . .this is probably the one aspect that you have strong control over, more so than tennis.

ps what does tennis recruiting rankings equate to?

thank you, and yes i realize that my academics are far more important than my tennis at this point. also the tennis recruiting rankings are done by tennisrecruiting.net, and it is a head to head ranking system, done by grade.

Lets see, you are using the TennisRecruiting rankings and you are saying you are @ #170 in class as a sophomore?

Are you following the advise given in the column in the center? That would be a start- Doing what it says sophomores should be doing- Or are you reading the columns?
Just pulling your name up again and again to see if anythings changed isn't quite the same thing.
Even if you don't do anything else, you should start receiving mail from smaller schools soon- look them over, while you start to figure out what you want from college. I just saw a pretty nice letter from Allegheny College.

Find a good JC, train at home, play Mens open divisions, keep your eligibility, raise your academics, save money, travel to ITF tourneys, train and compete till you drop. Your last two years of eligibility you should be able to play at bigger level.

No. You will not get recruited.

You won't have any more people watching you then you do now.

Search this board under Coach Carter, read.

#2 No. Again, read the clips that the Coach has kindly pulled. At #170 you are better off hitting the books.

#3 No. There are no "sponsorships" for you.
I just thought I would answer that one before you asked another question answered on board a lot. Also search ANYTHING under the name Dallas Oliver- he runs tennisrecruiting.com where you are getting your "ranking" and he is a pretty generous man with the straight information. Sorry to be too harsh, but everything you want to know is in these threads- just search.

ok thanks for your answer, even though i wasn't planning on asking anything about "sponsorships".

also just another question i have: for division 1 colleges, or even division 3 colleges do they base their interest on a player off of national rankings or sectional rankings, because in my case my parents can't really afford to take me around the country chasing national points, so i'm really limited to only my section tournaments, and close national opens. and this results in sometimes a relatively low national ranking, while i have finished top 15 in my section (which is pretty strong) consistently.

oh and btw i have searched through the junior forum and college forum, but couldnt really find the answers to my questions as they are pretty specific. I also have read many of Dallas Oliver and Coach Carter's posts and have found them very helpful.

also just another quick question: what's the difference between being recruited, and receiving letters from certain colleges.

Well, I think when people mention "getting letters" from colleges they're just talking about letters from universities with information about attending, the kind of thing every high school student gets. Basically with packets containing general info about the school. When people mention recruiting, they're talking about colleges giving you phone calls or sending letters specifically relating to your tennis and wanting you on their team.

^ The letters are general packets about the school, but aimed at players.
They are "from" the tennis coaches, and usually include an initial player outline to be returned to the school.
I'm not sure how the heck they get the mailing list, though- From USTA?

If you really want some eye-opening reading check ZOO TENNIS in Tennisrecruiting. There are tournament reviews and articles that cover WORLD trotting juniors, like some commenting they did not play their best at Palm Springs because they had jet lag from Johansesberg.

When you are refering to D1 "recruiting" understand that is every school going after the "top 50" then going foreign, period.
Just take the recruiting list- look at the top 10 senoirs in your section- Guys you watch and say "Holy Cr*p" at their serves and game- Just see where they end up.

And when you talk about chasing National points- Thats what it takes, and the amount spent is pretty funny, (depending on your sense of humor). I mean with these folks it's the kid or it would have been polo ponies.

Add the whole industry created to blow smoke up your skirt about chasing scholarship money that isn't there- and that's about all there is to write about it.
Tennis is a money sport- That is, TAKING your money is a sport. Look at all the hands in your pockets- or at least wanting to be in your pockets- That is how they make a living.
Compare it to the "modeling industry" or private book printers- Bottom line, if you were any good, wouldn't THEY be spending on YOU not the other way around ?
Sorry.

Coach Carter pulled some articles that flat out explained tennis is a MINOR sport;
At least in baseball you may get drafted - Any thoughts about throwing left handed?
