Hate for school

Going to be 11th grade, taking all the hard classes
Gonna have to study like 8 hours a day or suffer a B or B+
Starts it one week
Feeling sad even thinking about the first day of school

You?

I'm feeling pretty good. Enjoy my job, about to go on vacation for about 10 days, school is a remote memory. Pretty much everyone has to deal with school, try not to feel so bad about it.

Yep... Going into 10th grade. The worst part imo is always waking up @ 6:30 & all the dang homework. School would be 3x better w/o those. Starts next Monday. But Ill just have to deal w/ it & Im not too worried.

btw this should be in rants & raves section.

I know it's a cliche, but the school days are more often than not, the best of your life.

You'll be wishing you were back there in years time when you have to be up at 5 in the morning, don't get home until 7, have bills to pay etc.. :)

I've gone down that route (save for the toughest english class) so don't complain please. You are the one taking the classes because you think you can and decide to do so.

Take pride in your decision and do whatever you can. How competitive is your school? Here, a 4.0 would be >30th rank in my grade.

I never heard of a high schooler studying 8 hours a day, even the really successful students. Maybe you need to learn how to study.

Hmm I do remember junior being the hardest, but you have senior year to look forward to. The last semester when your grades don't count is the sweetest.

Hard to see the forest through the trees at your stage, but in the overall scheme of things how you do in high school is not that important. Of course you should try your best, but also try to enjoy the year as much as possible.

Meh. Not to hijack, but a lot of the people here (and it seems like OP included) don't slack off or loosen the focus senior year. I might be reading your post wrong but that's what I got from it, so sorry if I'm off.

@OP: If you've come this far and done your part to take a strong schedule, you might as well put in one more year. The extra knowledge and potential AP credit will pay off a lot in college. I have friends who have not had to take a lot of their freshman classes because they chose not to take two gym classes and two cooking classes with study halls.

Did you know that some colleges DO check your grades until the end? A few seniors I talked to last year said that their colleges mandated a C or better in the bulk of their classes, with the more subject-specific colleges being even more strict.

Well I was accepted in the fall of senior year. My spring semester grades didn't count in any meaningful way. If you are use to studying a lot, it is pretty easy to slow down a notch or two and still get mostly A's.

same here. i loved being able to take it easy with no risk at all. still able to pull good grades anyways... even with taking half days a few times a week!

8 hours? I'm pretty sure you are exaggerating like every other high schooler in school.

But if you really are having to work this hard just for B's and B+'s, you might want to lighten your load with lower level classes. Sure, colleges are impressed when you take a bajillion AP's, but you sacrifice your extracurriculars, sports, and life for something that many other people do without sacrificing those things and get A's. School shouldn't be suicude.

To the Op:

High school classes are not hard. So before you loosely throw around a term like "hard classes" think of the college students and college graduates who post on this board and actually have/ have had hard classes. My hardest class in high school, BC calculus, was a cake walk compared to even an easy college class.

Enjoy high school while you are there. You make good friends, you go to football games, you play sports and you don't have real world worries.

Focus on making good grades. At the risk of sounding arrogant let me say this to you. If you have to study 8 hours a day in high school, stop it. Even if you study that much and get into a good school, if high school is that hard for you college (at a good school) will really be impossible.

The only thing I have a little bit of sympathy for you on is the waking up thing. Yes when you get a job you have to wake up early, but in college you do get to sleep in a bit, more so than in high school at least.

Just relax and do your best, and dont stress, you will be fine.

Did you happen to take AP US History or AP English Literature? Those are supposed to be seriously nasty, depending on one's teacher.

Trust me, AP classes are nothing compared to many college courses.

I wish I could take classes as easy as the AP classes after taking some tough courses in college

yes sir, A's in both, 4's on both exams without studying...

In college took my first history class, studied 2 hours a day and about 24 hours straight just to make a B on the exam.

I took a total of 9 ap classes in high school, made A's in every one of them... wish i could say the same about my college courses.

I took AP US History and it is not nasty at all, I coasted through the class itself and got a 4 on the exam without studying. I just finished junior year, believe me, the more you stress about it the worse it will be. The best advice I can give you is to manage your time well and not get overwhelmed and have fun. You need to find time to unwind once in a while or you'll get burnt out. Relax and enjoy high school, good luck with your upcoming year, remember you have senior year to look forward to.

High school is the only time in your life where you'll be in a small setting with hundreds of people the same age as you, just like you, most of whom you know. When you go to college it gets more spread out and you don't see friends at every single corner. And then you go into the workplace. Enjoy high school.

And if you're studying 8 hours a day, you must be either procrastinating like crazy (browsing the internet every 10 minutes), or doing something stupid like reading the whole textbook. Study smarter, not harder.

In grade 11 you can do well with minimal studying. In all of high school I would only study for tests/quizzes. I'd never study and review everyday. I did fine with an A and B average.

Yeah, high school in a big way is a bit of a joke in the U.S. If you think you have it bad, try growing up somewhere else ;)

The United States school system is pretty lax, regardless of the level you take. The other posters are right, college is completely different, and it is pretty rare that the transition is easy. You'll be focusing on one aspect of study, so it gets very in depth and it will really challenge you. In High School, the classes are designed so that anyone regardless of skill set should be able to at least pass, which tells you enough as it is.

Sure, there are the AP classes and the IB/running start scenarios, but they're still not up to snuff to a good university, IMHO.

Good luck with your schooling, but seriously, take it in stride and trust that there are others out there that have bigger problems than homework and studying ;)

Doing fine is subjective, and pushing yourself isn't a crime ;)

I sympathize. I don't agree that college/university is harder than high school.

It isn't. Not in my experience and not in the experience of the people I know.

In college you actually take a program that interests you (unless you're just doing what your parents wants you to do, which is a bad idea), and thus one would assume that you're engaged with the material. When you're engaged things are easier, because the work is not all chore.

In high school there are numerous problems, including the fact that you have to take courses you don't like (nobody is into history and mathematics at the same time) and, of course, there's the whole issue of high-school-teachers-who-pretend-to-be-college-professors. You know the ones - those who teach courses in the very last grade or two and really spice them up in terms of difficulty for their own personal ego-driven enjoyment. The failed profs. Those who never did make it in the PhD program. That's right. You now know what I'm talking about. They are the ones who'll make your courses extra difficult - like in college, except when you actually attend college you realize that high school was even harder. At least in college nobody cares if you show up on time. You're a free man. Not in high school.

And of course, I can't leave out the fact that high schools, for the most part, are ugly, dirty, smelly places. I wouldn't go back if the ghost of Christmas past put a gun to my head. No siree.

you don't really need to study that hard in high school, even in the classes that people consider harder. those classes just have more homework/work to do than the other classes

If college was easier for you than high school, one of two things is true:

You went to a really crappy college, you went to a really good high school

College wasn't as much hard as it was challenging in a good way. School was hard because it forced me to bother with things that didn't interest me.

I love going back to school! It's awesome. You see people you haven't talked to all summer, tennis season starts, football games, homecoming, the classes are easy (for a month or so...). Good times!

I just don't like homework. Procrastination is my worst habit. Hopefully that's something I'll fix this year. I've got 3 AP classes, Advanced Chem and this programming class. I'm going to HAVE to figure it out :(
